Initial Inspection and Set-up
1.
Visually inspect the unit for any visible shipping
damages
2.
Loosen 6 thumb screws a few turns to allow the lid
to turn clockwise, then remove by gently lifting straight
up(Figure 1)
3.
Inspect the o-ring to ensure that it is undamaged,
free of debris, and seated properly in the groove.
(Figure 2)

4.
Remove the top blue diffusing plate(Figure 3) and
black sponge
5.
Locate and remove the parts pack which is inside
the unit
6.
Make sure bottom sponge is pushed all the way
down. Be careful of using your hand as the tube could
get stuck around it or your arm. We recommend using
rod or something similar to push the sponge flat to
bottom plate.
7.
Using the provided 60" roll of PTFE tape and wrap
both threads on the included barb fittings. Hint: Leave
first thread or two unwrapped, be sure to wrap the
fitting clock-wise or the same way the fitting turns
installing. Otherwise you will unthread the tape
lead to a leak. Fittings should be wrapped so
snug when twisted in by hand. Be careful not
too much tape or over tighten these fittings,
unit may occur if done

Reassemble the unit, always hand tighten the six
thumb screws. Using tools may damage the unit and/or
Oring seal.

On the lid the center fitting is the water input and
outer fitting is the water return to system(Figure 4)

MRC x3 & x5
Includes ECO kit
10.
If you purchased the x3 ECO Kit you will find an
additional parts pack. Included is an ECO Plus 132gph
pump with adjustable flow control, 4' of blue 1/2"ID
USDA food grade hose as well as three cable ties. You
will need to cut the hose at desired length to allow the
pump to be installed where it is completely submersed
in water at all times. The remaining tubing can be used
to return the water from the unit back into the system.
We recommend using clamps or the provided cable ties
to secure the hoses to the unit and pump. Be sure to
use a "drip loop" in the power cord when installing the
plug so water cannot enter the electrical outlet.
Remember to always unplug the pump before ever
servicing it or the unit. Careful attention should be
provided so that the tubing stays installed inside the
sump or aquarium at all times.

Bracket instructions
In order to install the i n c l u d e d clear hanging
bracket
on the x3, loosen 4 thumbscrews until none of threads
are protruding though the bottom of the top flange.
Once this is done, position the bracket on the underside
of the flange and align the 4 holes. Slowly tighten all 4
thumbscrews so they thread into and through the
bracket. The 3 layers (bracket, flange, & lid) should be
flush together; there should not be a gap between the c
l e a r bracket and the blue flange. Never set anything
on top of the unit or pull downward on it while installed.
Doing so may damage the unit. Never attempt to use
the flange on the x5 reactor.
Applications
The x3, x3 ECO Kit, and the x5 can be used with a
wide variety of medias, either as a single unit or
connected together with another for greater
capacity. T h e capability and performance is
dependent 100% on what media is being used,
volume of media, water throughput per system
volume as well as your intended results. Media of
the same amount in two different size reactors
essentially works the same; one unit just has more
water in it. Typically these media reactors are used
for biological media (MRC Bio-Media), various
carbons, GFO’s and other phosphate removing
materials. In these cases one could use the X3 on
systems up to 300 US gal and the X5 up to 500 US
gal. When installing these units never restrict the
output water flow. If a valve is going to be used
always install it before the unit on the water
inlet.MRC does not recommend any water flows to
exceed 300gph on the x3 or x5 units. Never use a
pressure rated pump; this will
result it catastrophic failure. For use in Marine,
Brackish, and Freshwater systems.
