The PMMN4041/PMMN4042/PMMN4043 Public Safety
Speaker/Microphone (PSM) provides a convenient means of
communicating by having a speaker, a microphone, a
Push-to-talk (PTT) button, a toggle switch, orange emergency
button and an earphone jack on side of the PSM housing.
The PMMN4041/PMMN4042/PMMN4043 Public Safety
Speaker/Microphone includes:
•A cable and connector assembly that connects the PSM
to the radio side connector.
•An orange button on top of the PSM housing that is
programmable via radio’s Customer Programming
Software (CPS).
•A PSM antenna jack (located on top of the PSM housing)
that enables a RF antenna to be connected for extending
English
the radio transmit/receive range.
•A 3.5 mm audio jack (located on opposite side of PSM’s
PTT) that accepts secondary receiver audio accessories.
•2 types of removable antenna that provides optimum
operation in each UHF (403
–433 MHz and 430–470 MHz),
and VHF (136–153 MHz and 150–174 MHz) frequency
band. The antenna is not supplied with the PSM kit. It must
be ordered separately. The antenna kit number is listed in
Table 1. It is not recommended to have both PSM antenna
and radio antenna connected. In doing so, the radio
transmit/received performance is reduced. Do not connect
the radio antenna on the PSM and vice versa because the
optimal radio operation in the UHF/VHF frequency band
will be reduced.
Note: The “PSM” word is embossed on the PSM antenna.
To assure optimum PSM performance, hold the PSM in the
vertical position, 2.5 to 5.0 centimeters (1-2 inches) away from
the mouth and keep the antenna at least 2.5 centimeters (one
inch) from the head or body.
Attaching the PSM to the Radio
1.Attach the PSM antenna to the PSM by inserting the
antenna into the PSM antenna jack and turn in a clock
-
wise direction until tighten.
2.Turn the radio off.
3.Remove the antenna from the radio by unscrewing the
antenna in a counterclockwise direction.
4.Attach the PSM GCAI connector to the mating radio
side connector and then secure the connection by
turning the connector’s screw in a clockwise direction
until tighten.
5.Turn the radio on.

Wearing the PSM
(See Figure1)
To minimize interference and optimize PSM performance,
wear the radio and PSM so that the accessory cord will not
cross over or touch the antenna. Also, try to wear the radio
and accessory fairly close to each other to avoid strain on the
accessory connector.

Note: For optimize PSM antenna performance,
wear the PSM antenna above shoulder
level.

Receiving
When the PSM is connected to the radio (side connector and
antenna port) the PSM antenna is enabled, the radio’s
speaker is muted, and the audio is only heard from the PSM
speaker. Similarly, when a secondary receiver audio
English
accessory is plugged into the 3.5 mm audio jack, audio to the
PSM is re-routed to the secondary accessory.
A toggle switch, located on top of the PSM, allows you to
adjust the volume from the radio’s setting to a lower level or
higher level without having to touch the radio. Press and hold
the toggle switch to the direction of ( ) to ramp up the
volume; press and hold the toggle to the direction of ( ) to
ramp down the volume. Volume adjustment are available at
8 interval. This feature is especially useful when the radio is
worn on the belt, and the speaker/microphone is on the lapel
or shoulder, as shown in
Figure1.

Transmitting
Connecting the PSM to the radio does not disable the radio’s
microphone and PTT.
Removing the PSM from the Radio
1.Turn the radio off.
2.Remove the PSM connector from the radio side
connector.
3.Reattach the radio antenna; screw the antenna into the
radio antenna jack in a clockwise direction until tighten.
4.Remember to keep the rubber seal inserted in the
PSM’s 3.5 mm jack when a secondary accessory is not
being used.
5.The radio is ready to be turned on for use.
