European Union (EU) Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive
The European Union's WEEE directive requires that products sold into EU countries must have the crossed out trashbin label
on the product (or the package in some cases).
As defined by the WEEE directive, this cross-out trashbin label means that customers and end-users in EU countries should
not dispose of electronic and electrical equipment or accessories in household waste.
Customers or end-users in EU countries should contact their local equipment supplier representative or service centre for
information about the waste collection system in their country.
The purpose of this guide is to provide basic information about the MCD 5000 Deskset System
and provide instruction for the initial set up and daily operation of the MCD 5000 Deskset.
This guide is also written for operators and technicians who are responsible for installing and
troubleshooting the MCD 5000 Deskset and related equipment. The guide provides reference
information for Motorola field support engineers.

OverviewChapter 1: MCD 5000 Deskset Description
An external desk paddle microphone or headset can be connected to the MCD 5000 Deskset. A
Headset Jack Box is used to connect a pair of prong plugs to interface the headset to an RJ45
cable connected to the headset Connector. An external footswitch can be connected to the MCD
5000 Deskset to enable hands free PTT and radio channel monitor ability.
The MCD 5000 Deskset supports the following features:
• Perform radio calls
• Emulate and Control Radio features including SB9600 interface
• Perform intercom calls between all MCD 5000 Desksets connected to the same radio in
the system
• Generate and view emergency calls
• Monitor radio and parallel MCD 5000 Deskset communication
• Full operation via LCD display and keypad

MCD 5000 Deskset User Guide MCD 5000 Deskset System Overview
The MCD 5000 Deskset is part o f the MCD 5 000 Desks et Sy stem. The un it is a desktop console
that provides dispatch capability when connected to a radio. The MCD 5000 Deskset user can
select and connect to one of many radios connect to the system for inbound/outbound
communication.
The MCD 5000 Deskset System also serves as an intercom system between all parallel MCD
5000 Desksets connected to the same radio.
The MCD 5000 Deskset System can be operated in the following configurations:
•System without an Operation and Management Center (OMC) (see Figure 1-2).
•System with an OMC (see Figure 1-3).
A system consists of the following components:
•MCD 5000 D eskse t: Phone-like device used by the end-user for oper ating the MC D 5000
Deskset System. Each MCD 5000 Deskset connects to a single Radio Device at a time.
•MCD 5000 Radio Gateway Unit (RGU): The Radio Gateway units connect Radio
equipment to the MCD 5000 Deskset System. The Radio Gateway can interface up to 4
Radio devices.
• Configuration Tool (CT): The CT is a Windows based utility, used to configure all
parameters and settings of the MCD 5000 Deskset and the radio gateway. The CT can be
located, remotely anywhere on the IP network or locally using Ethernet connection.
•IP Network: This is the customer provided WAN/LAN IP Network.
•Two-Way Radio Devices: Provide the access to the customer LMR system. The Radios’
control panel appear at the MCD 5000 Deskset as a V irtual Contr ol Head in the lower part
of the display.
The MCD 5000 Deskset can connect to following radios:
- CDM Series Radios: CDM1550, CDM1550 LS, CDM1550 LS+
- MCS 2000 Model III Control Station
•Operation And Maintenance Center Server (use only in system with an OMC): The
OMC Server is a main management server in the MCD 5000 Deskset System. It is
responsible to the MCD 5000 Deskset System operation, maintenance, provisioning, and
control. It is the central repository, where all system users (administrators, technicians)
and resources (MCD 5000s, and Radios) are registered, and where system-wide
information (alarms, logs, audits) is stored. The server runs on the Red Hat Linux
operating system. The Administrator Control Panel (ACP) Client PC provides a user level
interface to the OMC. Because of its importance, the OMC Server can be provided in a
warm-standby redundant configuration.

Operational Cautions
• Operating personnel must not open the MCD 5000 Deskset. Component replacement
must be made by qualified maintenance personnel.
• The MCD 5000 Deskset is designed only for indoors use.
• Do not expose the unit to water, rain, or snow.
• Do not connect the MCD 5000 Deskset to any exposed outdoor line or cable.
• Before using, read all the instructions and cautionary markings on the unit.
• To reduce the risk of damage to the wire or plug, pull by the plug rather than by the
cable when disconnecting the MCD 5000 Deskset Power supply from the power source
outlet.
• Do not operate the MCD 5000 Deskset with damaged cables or plugs - replace them
immediately.
• The MCD 5000 Deskset may become warm during operation, but not hot . If it becomes
too hot to touch, un plug the power cable of the MCD 5000 Desk set P ow er Supply from
the AC power outlet immediately and discontinue its use.
• Do not connect unapproved devices to the unit. Connection of unapproved devices to
the unit may result in a risk of fire, electric shock or injury to persons.

Base (Wall Mount Kit, P/N: FHN7394A) is available but not supp lied with the
MCD 5000 Deskset.
Wall mounting requires hanging the MCD 5000 Deskset using slots on the bottom side of the
Base and using the Base itself as a mounting template for the screw.
The MCD 5000 Deskset can be mounted onto any plaster, concrete or wood wall surface
provided the appropriate hardware is used.

1.K-Style Handset with built in PTT Button.
2.Power Supply Unit: 110/220 VAC to 12 VDC Power Sup ply Unit.
Power Supply Unit is not required when the MCD 5000 Deskset is connected to an
EXTERNAL LAN PoE type:802.3AF class 0 (12.5 W Max).
3.Desk Paddle Microphone - provides two buttons - one button controls General Transmit
and the other controls the Monitor feature.
4.Footswitch - provides two pedals - one pedal controls General Transmit and the other
controls the Monitor feature.
5.Headset: supports connection of a single earpiece and microphone
6.Headset Base: Headset Base with PTT Button provides connectiv ity to the headset with

side of the MCD 5000 Deskset.
7Connect the AC cord of the power supply unit to the AC power wall mount outlet
(100-240 VAC, 50/60hz). The AC power outlet should be as near as possible to
the equipment and should be accessible.

Footswitch (2-pedal)
Each MCD 5000 Deskset can support up to one footswitch. The footswitch provides two foot
pedals in a rugged, metal housing with a seven foot cable. One pedal is used for the general
transmit feature while the other pedal is used for the monitor feature (see Figure 2-4).

The MCD 5000 Deskset footswitch does not support a ‘Sticky PTT’ operation
mode. ‘Sticky PTT’ is an operation mode where the PTT button is pressed twice,
once for originating the PTT session and second for releasing the PTT; in the MCD
5000 Deskset System the PTT button has to be kept pressed otherwise the PTT
released.
MCD 5000 Headset Jack Box
A headset may be used with the MCD 5000 Deskset to allow the MCD 5000 Deskset user to
listen and receive audio on the selected radio channels and talk on any radio channels. The MCD
5000 Deskset supports one headset per MCD 5000 Deskset.
A headset must be connected to the MCD 5000 Deskset through a FHN7470 - “MCD 5000
Headset Jack Box” as shown in Figure 2-4.
The headset assembly consists of two parts: a headset base and a headset.
The headset base is an amplifying unit which comes with or without PTT (see Figure B-5 and
Figure B-6).
The headset base is hooked to a Headset Jack Box unit by two pr ong connectors and to the MCD
5000 Deskset by cable via “DESKSET” RJ-45 connector (see Figure B-4).
