Power supply
Battery operation
1 Remove the battery compartment door.
2 Insert 8 UM-1 D size batteries into the battery compartment with
battery polarity positioned as indicated.
• We recommend use of alkaline batteries.
3 Close the battery compartment door.
Mains operation
Plug the mains power cord into the AC socket and then into any normal
household mains outlet.
Radio operation
Set FUNCTION switch (2) to the radio position.
FM stereo band
Select FM ST. mode with the BAND SELECTOR switch. Turn the TUNING KNOB
to select the desired station. The FM stereo indicator will light up to show
a FM stereo broadcast is being received. Fully extend the FM antenna and
adjust its direction for best FM reception.
Medium wave band
Select MW mode with the BAND SELECTOR switch. Turn the TUNING KNOB to
select the desired station. For medium wave reception the signal is
recieved by a built-in aerial which is directional. Therefore, the set should
be positioned for the best signal strength.
Cassette operation
Playing a cassette
Tighten any slack tape in the cassette before use, using either a pencil or
pen by simply inserting into the centre of the spool and rotating.

• Press PAUSE to pause. Press PAUSE again to resume playing.
Rewind
To rewind the tape press REWIND when the tape is stopped, the button will
stay down and the tape will completely rewind. Press STOP/EJECT at any
time to stop rewinding.
Fast forward
To fast forward the tape press FAST FORWARD when the tape is stopped, the
button will stay down and the tape will fast forward until the end of the
tape. Press STOP/EJECT at any time to stop fast forwarding.
Auto-stop
When the tape reaches the end during playback or recording, the built-in
auto-stop system will release the depressed keys. If recording from the
built-in radio or CD player, only the cassette is brought to a stop and the
radio or CD will continue to play.
• There is no auto-stop on cassette fast forward and rewind.
Recording
1 Install a cassette tape.
2 Set
3 After recording the broadcast, press
STOP/EJECT to open the cassette door. Insert the cassette into the
compartment with the open end facing upwards and the full reel on the
right hand side, push the cassette well down and close the door, be
sure not to touch the tape surface.
CASSETTE PLAY.
STOP/EJECT once. To release the cassette, press
STOP/EJECT again.
FUNCTION SWITCH (2) to the radio position. After selecting the desired
band, tune using the tuning knob (11) to desired radio station. Push
down RECORD button (9) and PLAY (8) simultaneously.
STOP/EJECT (5) lightly, and then set
FUNCTION SWITCH to the cassette (off) and rewind in order to listen to the
recorded broadcast.

• Tape recording is also available for CD playback (set FUNCTION switch to
the CD position).
Erase
When you record over previously recorded tape, the original recording is
erased and replaced by the new material.
Protecting recordings
You can protect your recording from accidental erasure by removing the
safety tab.
When the cassette is held with the recorded side upper-most and with the
exposed tape facing the front, the protective tab will be found on the left
rear of the cassette. All pre-recorded cassettes are protected in this way
to prevent accidental erasure of the commercial recording. Protected
cassettes will prevent the record button from being operated. If at any time
you attempt to record and find that this button will not depress, never
force the mechanism or it may be damaged. Check that a cassette has
been loaded and that the tab has not been removed. Recording on a
cassette from which the tabs have been removed can be done by
covering the tab openings with a piece of adhesive tape.
Care of cassette mechanism
Gently clean the tape head and pinch wheel / capstan assemblies after
every 10 hours of use. A range of cassette care products are available.
The erase head and record/play head and the surface of the pinch roller
are delicate and must not be touched with metal objects such as
screwdrivers. You may find it easier to clean the assembly by pressing
PLAY to bring head and pinch roller into view. Be sure to press STOP after
cleaning the mechanism. Damage to the pinch wheel can occur if the unit
is left in play mode with the power switch off. Under no circumstances
should you attempt to lubricate any part of the machine.
Types of cassette
Use only good quality cassettes (IEC TYPE 1) for making recordings. The
boom box may be used to replay other types of cassette but is unable to
make proper recordings on these more specialized tapes. The use of C120
cassettes is not recommended.

CD (compact disc) operation
Set FUNCTION switch to the CD position. Open the CD door and put in a
CD. Close the CD door and the unit will start reading. The LCD indicator
shows the tracks of a disc which are still to be played. Total numbers of
tracks on the disc are shown when in stop mode.
Playing the entire disc
1 Press CD PLAY/PAUSE and playback starts with the first track. The
display will show the current track number.
2 To interrupt the playback, press CD PLAY/PAUSE. The CD play/pause
indicator will be flashing.
3 To resume playback, press
4 To stop playback, press CD STOP.
Selecting a different track during play
1 Press CD SKIP FORWARD/BACKWARD continuously until the desired track
number appears in the display.
2 Playback starts from the desired track. (Press
playback in stop mode).
Starting again with the track that is currently
playing
1 Press CD SKIP BACKWARD once.
2 The playback will start again from the beginning of the track.
Stopping play
1 Press CD STOP. The total number of tracks which can be played now
show in the display.
2 Open the CD door on the unit to remove the CD.
Repeat play
When playing, press REPEAT once and ‘REP’ will flash on the display for
playing the same track only. If you want to repeat all tracks, press the
REPEAT button again and ‘REP.’ will be shown on the display. To cancel
repeat play, press REPEAT until the ‘REP.’ disappears.
CD PLAY/PAUSE again.

X-Bass system
The X-BASS (1) controls the bass of the unit. Bass sound is the lower
frequency ranges of sound. The knob can be pushed to OFF or ON position.
When X-Bass is on, the unit increases the sound output of the bass
frequencies.
Headphone jack
For private listening, insert a 3.5mm headphone (not included) into the
headphone jack. The speaker output is automatically cut off.
WARNING: Listening at high power for a long time could
damage the users’ ear.

Compact disc maintenance
Always use compact discs bearing the mark as shown.
Handling discs
When removing the disc from its storage case and loading it:
• Do not touch the reflective recorded surface.
• Do not stick paper or write anything on the surface.
• Do not bend the disc.
Storage
• Store the disc in its case.
• Do not expose discs to direct sunlight or high temperatures, high
humidity or dusty places.
Cleaning a disc
If there is a scratch, dirt or finger prints on the CD, it may cause tracking
errors. Before playing, clean the CD with a clean cloth. Wipe the CD from
the centre outwards. After playing, store the disc in its CD case.
• Never use benzene, thinners, record cleaner fluid or anti static spray.
• Be sure to close the CD door so the lens is not contaminated by dust.
Do not touch the lens.

To avoid electric shock, this unit must not be exposed to dripping water or
water splash. Ventilation must not be impeded.
