1. Introduction

The solution for basic customer needs

The KM-1620 from Kyocera Mita is offering the perfect choice for small and medium offices. The KM-1620 successfully combines digital laser-quality copying, digital functions like Scan-Once-Print-Many and electronic sorting with desktop convenience. Like its predecessors, the KM-1620 delivers reliability, ease of use and excellent paper handling capabilities.

Excellent paper handling capability

The KM-1620 can be equipped with a 50-sheet automatic Document Processor as enhancer, which makes quick work of handling multi-page originals. For high productivity, the KM-1620 offers a standard paper capacity of 350 sheets, achieved by a 300-sheet paper feeder and a 50-sheet multi purpose tray. The maximum paper capacity of 1,250 sheets is achieved through up to 3 additional paper feeders of each 300 sheets. All of them can hold A6 up to A3 paper. Together with the duplex copy capability, the KM-1620 can easily fulfil the need of corporate users, governments, schools and others to reduce their printing costs.

The KM-1620 satisfies various environmental standards such as WEEE, Blue Angel and Energy We also care about environmental aspects that directly benefit our customers. Such as the reduction of energy use with the power saving mode and the shortest warm up time, as well as the reduction of paper use with the duplexing and ‘n-in-one’ functionality. Kyocera Mita is also a pioneer in prohibiting hazardous materials like lead. This means that our products are the first in the industry that do not include lead in the mounting solder and wiring cables.

2. Positioning

KM-1620 is positioned as the new A3 business entry copier with digital functionality and excellent paper handling capabilities. As successor of KM-1525, the KM-1620 is equipped with more powerful digital copy functions as standard and easy handling. The main target for this copier is not only the replacement of KM-1525, but also the replacement of competitors’ analogue models in the same speed range. The optional 3 paper feeders also allow us to target the higher volume copy users. With the duplex copy capability we can fulfil the needs of corporate users, governments, schools and others to reduce their printing costs. In short, thanks to its very attractive & low initial machine price, low service costs and competitive CPP, the new KM-1620 can successfully compete against established competitors’ analogue and digital products.

4.2 “Low-cost”-design, to satisfy both end customers and dealers

One of the key sales arguments in the entry model segment is price. This is even

more important for the digital models in this segment, as the low-priced A3 size

analogue copier models still make up about 30% of the segment. Kyocera Mita’s

answer to this reality is the introduction of very competitively priced models, like the

KM-1620.

The KM-1620 is a digital copier only, not offering optional printing, faxing and

scanning functionality. It has been designed to fully satisfy our customers business

copying needs - which are still a high priority in offices today.

The KM-1620 is the answer to those business needs. It is the only copier in its class

to offer several enhancement units & N-Up capability. With its standard 32MB

memory, fully used for copying, it supports Scan-Once-Print-Many and combine

copy (2-in-1 and 4-in-1), electronic sort & rotate sort copy. It can also be equipped

with three additional paper feeders, and can therefore target the more high volume

copy users. This, together with the duplex copy capability enables the KM-1620 to

meet the needs of corporate users, governments, schools and others to reduce their

4.4 Long Life Design and strong Total Cost of Service

The KM-1620 has been designed to offer a low total cost of service. Only few

maintenance services will be required throughout the machine's life. Through the

solid design of the machine, dealers do not have to store a lot of spare parts,

maintenance service calls are short and easy to do. This reduces the labor cost for

service representatives significantly. As only the Drum Unit (MK-410) is changed

during the periodical maintenance cycle, the time required for maintenance is

reduced to only 15 minutes or less

Recognised - Environmental standards

The KM-1620 satisfies various environmental standards such as the WEEE (EU

Environmental Directive), Energy Star, Blue

Angel, Japanese ECO Mark and Green

Purchasing Network law (which started from

2001 in Japan). The KM-1620 will also be adapted to meet various standards that

target the development and introduction of energy efficient office automation

equipment.

With a warm-up time of only 20 seconds, the KM-1620 is ready for copying by 1/3

faster than its predecessors the KM-1525/1530/2030 (30 sec.) and one of the fastest

among its competitors. Together with its 5.9 second first copy speed, the KM-1620

will never make you wait. In other words, you can make quick copies while saving

energy.

Energy Saving - Power Saving Mode

The KM-1620 has two power saving modes: Low

Power Mode and Off Mode. When the Energy

Saver key is pressed, the KM-1620 enters the

Low Power Mode and lowers the heat fusing

temperature to save power consumption. It can be

reset to Ready Mode within 10 seconds.

Off Mode is started by pressing the Energy Saver key for 3 seconds. In the Off Mode,

almost every power supply except the operation panel stops and the copier

consumes only 4W or less.

Environmentally friendly - Lead Free

Lead used to be an important substance in the production

of copiers. But lead is highly toxic and to protect the

environment it had to be eliminated from the machines.

Not a particularly easy exercise, however, Kyocera

Mita is proud to announce that the KM-1620 is the

first copier being produced with unleaded

soldering and wiring in the industry! We will continue this success to develop an

environmentally friendly product line for the future of our world.

4.6 Ease of use - Big operation panel located in user friendly low position

Usually, operation panels of copiers are located in front of the

document processor or platen cover, a set-up that is not really

convenient for desktop use. The KM-1620 however, comes with its

operation panel at the front of the paper output area. It can be

operated with the user comfortably sitting at his desk. The

operation panel itself is 60% larger than that of current

models and its large buttons also improve its ease of use.

With the launch of the KM-1620 all copiers and multifunctional products in segment

1b are following the "Midnight Blue & Ivory" color scheme. Kyocera Mita now, not

only offers consistent reliability, ease of use and competitive pricing across the

whole product line, but also the same look and feel.

4.7 Compact Design

The KM-1620's dimensions are only 574 x 552 mm, which is 5%

smaller than the KM-1530 (550 x 607 mm). Space consuming

parts such as the power supply connector, or fan unit are located

inside or at the side of the machine, so the copier can be placed

directly against a wall. The Duplex Unit (DU-410) is an internal

unit that does not increase the size of the copier

5. Key features

5.1 Scan-once-print-many

With Scan-Once-Print-Many, originals are scanned only once, converted to digital

images and stored in the memory for later or immediate output. Up to 99 sets of copies

can be reproduced whenever needed.

5.2 Electronic / Rotate sort

Multiple originals can be scanned into the standard memory

in a single operation, and then the required number of copy

sets can be printed and sorted as desired, thus eliminating

the use of external sorters.

5.3 Duplex copying

Copies in A4 and A3 can be made from single page originals as well as from double

sided originals in the same simple action.

5.4 Combined Inch and Metric copying

With the KM-1620 you can copy on and with inch-specific or metric-specific paper

sizes as well as a combination of both. (e.g. A3 to Letter, Oficio2 to A4 copy using

AMS zooming, and so forth). Also, it is possible to program non-standard paper

sizes to the machine.

5.5 Layout mode (2-in-1, 4-in-1)

In this mode, the images from either 2 or 4 originals can be reduced

and then combined onto a single copy. In addition, the borderline of

each original can also be marked with a solid or dotted line.

As a default, the copier is set to handle portrait originals, which are

entered into the document processor in portrait.

When wanting to copy 4 landscape originals onto on page each, the

machine settings have to be changed first in four simple steps:

• Press the [2-in-1 / 4-in-1] button for 3 seconds until you see

“F28” in the display.

• Confirm this by pressing the “Recall / Enter” button.

• You can now choose the layout of your choice (landscape or portrait) by using

the “Zoom –“ or “Zoom +” keys. (Option 1- is for portrait, option 3- is for

landscape originals.)

• Confirm your choice with the “Recall / Enter” button.

You can now start copying!

Please remember to switch the setting in the above described way when your

originals orientation changes.

5.6 EcoCopy Mode

EcoCopy mode, designed to save toner consumption, is also

adopted in the KM-1620. In EcoCopy mode, the toner

consumption is reduced by approximately 30% while

maintaining an output quality that is more than sufficient for

normal daily copying. The EcoCopy mode is very effective for

reducing toner consumption when copying in-house documents or drafts that have a

high toner coverage.

5.7 Mode Program Key

The KM-1620 can register up to 10 simple copy job

settings, such as inch/metric

copying and rotate sort. Once you put the setting mode

in the program, you can start copying with only 3

actions (1. Program key Æ 2. Number keys Æ 3.Start

key) thus reducing the number of steps.

5.8 Paper Feeder with Paper Gauge

No more worrying whether there is still enough paper

available before copying! Through the paper gauge at

the outside of the paper feeder you can easily see

how many sheets remain in the copier.

5.9 Auditory Signals

Effective and easy use also for our senior or sight-restricted customers! The

KM-1620 offers auditory signals, so any user can use this copier easily and

comfortably. These auditory signals (“beep”-sounds) tell the user whether or not the

product is being used correctly.

There are three kinds of sounds: The "operation check sound", to confirm the correct

processing of the operation. This also informs the user, whether his action was

successful or not. The “normal end sound" which confirms the shutting down of the

power supply in case the machine had been put into the off-mode manually before.

And thirdly the “caution sound” which urges attention from the user in case the

machine has an open cover or emptied toner.

6.0 Management mode

The management mode allows you to manage and account for the number of copies

made by specific departments or employees, also called sections. You can easily set

a “section code”, an 8-digit number, for every department or person whose copy

costs you’d like to monitor.

• A Maximum of 100 sections/ departments can be managed

• The “section code” can be set from 0 to 99999999 with a maximum of 8 digits

• A report of the total page count per section can easily be printed out.

7.0 Enhancements

DP-410

The DP-410 is the document processor for the

KM-1620, supporting the copying of double-sided

originals (also known as Automatic Reversing

Document Feeder). The simple design and

mechanism provide highly reliable double-sided

document feeding, which saves you time and hassle.

The weight is only 6 kg (13.3 lbs), so that the cover

can be opened and closed easily.

PF-410

The PF-410 is the paper feeder for the KM-1620. Up to 3 additional paper feeders

can be attached to this copier, which comes standard with one paper feeder. The

PF-410 offers the following benefits:

• Easy set up: Just slide the unit into the machine like any printer paper feeder.

• Paper gauge: You can see the paper level of the remaining sheets immediately.

• Larger capacity: 300 sheets, 50 sheets more than our existing paper feeder.

The benefit of additional memory for the KM-1620 will become visible when customers

save pages with higher toner coverage than the 6% referenced above. This means that

even with toner coverage of more than 90%, customers can save about 250 sheets onto
