3-1 Hardware notes
3-1-1 Hardware configuration
The hardware of the paper feeder DU-81 includes the Duplex unit feed clutch and the cooling fan,
which are under control of the printer main unit using signals. The rollers are driven directly by the
printer motor via the gears.
The duplex unit feed clutch is used to turn on and off the driving force of the motor for the pick up
roller and the angle roller. The cooling fan is provided to cool the paper as it passes by.

3-1-2 Interface connector
The interface connector is for connection of signals between the duplexer and the printer. The
diagram below shows the arrangement of the connector pins.

3-2 Duplex printing system
The paper delivered by the paper feeder underneath is passed on to the transfer section by means of
the intermediate rollers and alighment rollers. The paper is printed on its front (first) side, reaches
the fuser section for permanently fusing toner by the fusing rollers, then sent to the reverse section
as guided by the switchback solenoid. The direction of paper feed is changed in the reverse section.
The AD gate solenoid acts to send back the paper using the guide into the duplexer unit. In the
duplexer unit, the angle roller compensates the skew, if any, then send the paper to the pickup
rollers for feeding the paper back in the printer. Timing for feedback is triggered by the pick sensor
which is enabled by the actuator in the duplexer unit. The paper is sent to the transfer section by the
intermediate roller and alignment roller and printing is done on the back (second) side. Again, the
paper is sent to the fuser unit, then to the output tray, completing the duplex printing.
