Proportional Counter Tubes BF3 Filled
The neutron sensitivity of these proportional counters
is achieved by lling the tube with the gas boron-tri-
uorid, made of highly enriched Boron-10. Thermal
neutrons react with the isotope Boron-10 emitting
alpha particles, which produce ionization in the gas
lling of the detector (electrons and gas ions). In the
electrical eld between the electrodes these charged
particles will be accelerated and secondary ionization
happens. This so called “gas ampli cation” multiplies
proportionally the amount of charge generated in the
tube.
APPLICATIONS
• Operational process monitoring
○ Detection and measurement of the thermal
neutrons outside the reactor core for neutron dose
rate monitoring and neutron ux monitoring in the
pulse range
