Performing the initial start-up
1. For the initial start-up, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds to turn on your Mio.
2. The Main Menu screen will display. You can now use your Mio.
Note: The battery may not be fully charged when you use your Mio for the first time. To charge the battery, see the next
section.

Charging the battery
When charging the battery for the very first time, you should charge it for at least 12 hours via the USB cable
with your device turned off. Do not disconnect the device from the power source during charging.
CAUTION: For optimal performance of the lithium battery:
 Do not charge the battery where the temperature is high (e.g. in direct sunlight).
 Recharge the battery when it is nearly discharged. When recharging, make sure that the battery is fully charged. Doing
so can extend the battery life.
 If you will not use the product for a long period of time (over one month) or find the discharge/recharge time has been
shortened, be sure to fully discharge the battery first before recharging it. You are also advised to fully discharge and
recharge the battery once every 1~2 months.
 Failure to follow the battery usage instructions could cause damage to your Mio, battery and even bodily injury or
property damage and will void the warranty.
1. Turn off your Mio so that it takes less time to charge the battery.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. Connect the mini-USB end of the USB cable to the left side of your Mio and the other end to a USB port in
your computer.
Note: If your Mio is on when connected to a computer, a screen appears to prevent you from using your Mio.
Note: When the Mio is connected to a computer, it is recognised as an external mass storage device. Do not delete any files
pre-installed in the Mio. Deleting files of which the function is unknown can cause programs or features to malfunction.

Using your Mio in a vehicle
CAUTION:
 Select an appropriate location for mounting the Mio in a vehicle. Never place the Mio where the driver’s field of vision is
blocked.
 If the car’s windscreen is tinted with a reflective coating, it may be athermic and impact the GPS reception. In this
instance, please mount your Mio where there is a “clear area.”
 To protect your Mio against sudden surges in current, connect the car charger only after the car engine has been
started.

Operating basics
Turning on and off
For normal operation, turn off the device by briefly pressing the power button. Your Mio enters a standby
mode. When you next briefly press the power button, the system resumes. Your Mio will be back to where you
left off.
To turn off your Mio, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Resetting your Mio
Occasionally, you may need to perform a hardware reset when your Mio stops responding; or appears to be
“frozen” or “locked-up.”
Insert a small rod, such as a straightened paperclip, into the reset button of your Mio. Your Mio will restart
automatically.

Navigating on the screen
To operate your Mio, touch the screen with your fingertip. You can perform the following actions:
Tap
Touch the screen once with your fingertip to open items or select onscreen buttons or options.
Drag
Hold your fingertip on the screen and drag up/down/left/right or across the screen. (This is not supported
by all applications.)
 Tap and hold
Tap and hold your fingertip until an action is complete, or a result or menu is shown. (This is not supported
by all applications.)

Main Menu
The Main Menu is your starting place for various tasks. Tap a button to start a task or open another menu.
Name Description
Navigation Starts the navigation software.
AV-IN Acts as a video or audio output device (Cruiser 5165 only).
Media Plays stored audio and video files on your Mio.
Phone Uses your Mio as a hands-free car kit.
Settings Customises the system settings.
Note: The Main Menu screens may differ from those displayed above, depending on your Mio model.

AV IN
Note: This feature is not available on all models.
Depending on your model, your Mio may receive AV input from external equipment, such as a DVD player. This
means that you can use your Mio as a second screen.
CAUTION: Your Mio MUST NOT be used to play video when driving. Using this feature may cause an accident. Please
ensure you comply with this warning. Mio accepts NO liability whatsoever in this regard.
Note: The AV IN function supports NTSC/PAL (interlace) formats.
1. Make sure the external video device is turned on.
2. Connect your Mio to an external AV source as shown below:
Connect the video (yellow) and audio (red and white) signal ends of the AV cable (not supplied) to the AV
output connectors on the external video device. Then connect the other end of the AV cable to the AV IN
connector on your Mio.
3. You can now start playing back the video. The playback screen will appear on your Mio. (Tap
Main Menu if necessary.)

Media Player
Using Media you can play video and music files stored on your Mio or on a memory card.
To start the program, Tap
on the Main Menu.
Playing audio files
Only .wma and .wav audio formats are supported for the audio feature.
Before using the program, have the files (.wma and .wav) ready either in your device’s My Flash Disk\My Audio
folder or on a memory card.
1. If your files are on a memory card, insert the card into your Mio.
2. Complete one of the following:

Using Bluetooth hands-free calling
If you have a mobile phone with Bluetooth wireless technology, you can use your Mio as a hands-free car kit or
to provide an internet connection. It can also be used to connect to a Bluetooth mono/stereo earphone to
output audio. Models with Bluetooth capabilities can exchange information over a distance of about 10 metres
(30 feet) without requiring a physical connection.
Before you can use this feature you must pair your mobile phone with your Mio. Ensure that the Bluetooth
wireless feature of your mobile phone is turned on before you begin pairing. To save power, Bluetooth is set to
OFF by default.
Note: Not all phones with Bluetooth wireless technology are compatible with your Mio.
Pairing your Mio with a Bluetooth mobile phone
1. Tap on the Main Menu.
2. Tap Bluetooth.
3. Tap OFF next to the Bluetooth option.
4. Tap Search New devices. The Searching screen will display a list of nearby Bluetooth-enabled devices.
5. Select a Bluetooth device from the list. The Connecting screen will display.
Note: If you are prompted for a pass code or device PIN, enter 1234.
When you pair your mobile phone with your Mio, a connection is established between them. The 12 most
recently paired devices will display on the My Paired Devices screen.
Note: When using the Navigation, the hands-free is OFF and the DUN (dial-up networking) connection is ON to allow access
to the on-line services. Once you exit the Navigation, tapping
, then Yes will bring you back to hands-free again.
Configuring Internet settings
The Internet connection when turned on allows you to access live information over the Internet.
By default, your Mio will automatically detect the Internet settings of the paired phone. If you need to change
the Internet settings manually:
1. Tap the paired phone on the My Paired Devices screen. The Phone Details screen will display.

2. Tap Internet Settings. The Internet Settings screen will display.

Making a phone call

start entering a new number.

Note: International calls require a country code to be included in the phone number. On your Mio, the country code is
separated from the rest of the number sequence by a +. If you are making an international call, tap and hold 0 until the +
sign displays.
5. Tap to place the call. The Dialling screen will display. When the call is answered, the Call in progress screen will display.

Adding a contact
Your Mio uses contacts created on your mobile phone. To add a new contact to your Mio, you must first add it
to your mobile phone. Refer to your mobile phone user manual for more information.
Note: If there are no contacts on your Mio, you will be prompted to transfer the contact list from your phone. Your phone may
disconnect, and then reconnect to your Mio during the transfer.
From the Phone screen tap Contacts. The Contacts screen will display.
If a contact has more than one phone number, the numbers will be separated into multiple entries of the same
name entries, each with a different number.
Searching for a contact
Your contact names will be displayed in an alphabetical order on your Mio.
1. To search for a contact, tap Filter. The Keyboard screen will display.
2. Enter your contacts name, then tap OK.
3. Tap a contact from the list. The Contact Detail screen will display.
Making a phone call to a contact
1. From the Phone screen tap Contacts. The Contacts screen will display.
2. Select a contact from the list. The Contact Detail screen will display.

Viewing the call history
From the Call Recents screen you can view a list of incoming calls, outgoing calls and missed calls.
The Call Recents screen lists the calls made during the time your Mio is connected to a mobile phone. Numbers
are arranged by time with the most recent time at the top. Your Mio can store up to 30 numbers, 10 entries for
incoming, outgoing and missed calls each.
1. From the Phone screen tap Call Recents. The Call Recents screen will display.
2. To call a number in your call history, tap a contact on the list.
Tap the icon on the top-right corner of the Call Recents screen to sort through incoming calls, outgoing
calls and missed calls.

Clearing the call history
From the Call Recents screen tap Clear to delete all calls in call history.
Saving a contact in Favourites
You can save a contact in Favourites by tapping on the Contact Detail screen. The icon changes to .
To access the contacts saved in Favourites, tap Favourites from the Phone screen. The Favourites screen will
display. Tap a contact from the list to make a call.

Customising the system settings
You can customise the system settings such as backlight brightness and volume. Once you change the settings,
the new settings will remain until you change them again.
To enter Settings, tap
on the Main Menu.
Volume
1. Tap Volume on the Settings Menu.
2. Move the slider to adjust the volume. To decrease the volume,
move the slider to the left. To increase the volume, move the
slider to the right.
Tap
to mute the volume, and tap to unmute the
volume.
3. Tap
to save the changes.
Brightness
1. Tap Brightness on the Settings Menu.
2. Move the slider to adjust the brightness of the backlight. To
darken the backlight, move the slider to the left. To lighten the
backlight, move the slider to the right.
3. Tap
to save the changes.
Language
1. Tap Language on the Settings Menu.
2. Tap your preferred language.
Bluetooth
The Bluetooth on the Settings Menu allows you to pair a mobile phone or headset with your Mio.
To enable or disable Bluetooth on your Mio, turn the Bluetooth
option ON or OFF.
If you do not want your Mio to automatically connect to the last
paired mobile phone, turn the Auto Connection option OFF.

page 13.

Calibration
1. Tap Calibration on the Settings Menu.
2. Tap and hold the centre of the target.
3. When the target moves to another position, tap and hold the
centre of the new target. Repeat each time to complete the
calibration process.

Reference
Inserting a memory card
CAUTION: Do not apply pressure to the centre of the memory card.
Hold the card (MicroSD) by the edges and gently insert it into the slot as shown below.
To remove a card, gently push the top edge of the card inwards to release it, and pull it out of the slot. Inserting
the card in the reverse direction may cause damage.
Note: Mio does not guarantee the product’s compatibilities with MicroSD cards from all manufacturers.
Troubleshooting
Note: If you encounter a problem you cannot solve, contact an authorised service centre for assistance.
Problems Solutions
Power does not switch on when using
battery power.
Screen responds slowly. Make sure that your Mio is not running out of battery power. If the problem still
Screen freezes. Reset your Mio. (See “Shutdown and hardware reset” for information.)
Screen is hard to read. Make sure that the backlight of the display is set to a high-enough brightness.
Cannot establish a connection with a
computer.
The remaining battery power may be too low. Charge the battery.

Make sure that the cable is securely plugged into the USB port on your computer
and on the Mio. Connect the USB cable directly to your computer—do not run the

restart your computer.

Caring for your Mio
Taking good care of your Mio will ensure trouble-free operation and reduce the risk of damage to your Mio.
 Keep your Mio away from excessive moisture and extreme temperatures.
 Avoid exposing your Mio to direct sunlight or strong ultraviolet light for extended periods of time.
 Do not place anything on top of your Mio or drop objects on your Mio.
 Do not drop your Mio or subject it to severe shock.
 Do not subject your Mio to sudden and severe temperature changes. This could cause moisture
condensation inside the unit, which could damage your Mio. In the event of moisture condensation, allow
the Mio to dry out completely before use.
 The screen surface can easily be scratched. Avoid touching it with sharp objects. Non-adhesive generic
screen protectors designed specifically for use on portable devices with LCD panels may be used to help
protect the screen from minor scratches.
 Never clean your Mio with it powered on. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe the screen and the exterior of
your Mio.
 Do not use paper towels to clean the screen.
 Never attempt to disassemble, repair or make any modifications to your Mio. Disassembly, modification
or any attempt at repair could cause damage to your Mio and even bodily injury or property damage and
will void any warranty.
 Do not store or carry flammable liquids, gases or explosive materials in the same compartment as your
Mio, its parts or accessories.
 To discourage theft, do not leave the device and accessories in plain view in an unattended vehicle.
 Do not expose the device to extreme heat or direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Overheating may
damage the device.

About charging
 Use only the charger supplied with your device. Use of another type of charger will result in malfunction
and/or danger.
 This product is intended to be supplied by a LISTED Power Unit marked with “LPS”, “Limited Power
Source” and output rated + 5 V dc / 1.0 A”.
 Use a specified battery in the equipment.
About the charger
 Do not use the charger in a high moisture environment. Never touch the charger when your hands or feet
are wet.
 Allow adequate ventilation around the charger when using it to operate the device or charge the battery.
Do not cover the charger with paper or other objects that will reduce cooling. Do not use the charger while
it is inside a carrying case.
 Connect the charger to a proper power source. The voltage requirements are found on the product case
and/or packaging.
 Do not use the charger if the cord becomes damaged.
 Do not attempt to service the unit. There are no serviceable parts inside. Replace the unit if it is damaged
or exposed to excess moisture.
About the battery
 Use a specified battery in the equipment.
 CAUTION: This unit contains a non-replaceable internal Lithium Ion battery. The battery can burst or
explode, releasing hazardous chemicals. To reduce the risk of fire or burns, do not disassemble, crush,
puncture, or dispose of in fire or water.
 Important instructions (for service personnel only)
 Caution: Risk of explosion if battery is replaced by an incorrect type. Dispose of used batteries
according to the instructions.
 Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer.
 The battery must be recycled or disposed of properly.
