Using the Printer
To ensure the optimum performance of the printer, follow the
precautions listed below.
• NEVER open any printer door, or turn OFF the printer during
operation.
• NEVER bring any magnetized object or flammable gas or liquid
near the printer.
• NEVER pull on the power cord and ALWAYS hold the plug
when unplugging it. A damaged cord could result in a fire or
cause an electrical shock.
• NEVER attempt to unplug the power cord with a wet hand, as it
could cause an electrical shock.
• ALWAYS unplug the power cord whenever attempting to move
the printer. Moving the printer with the power cord plugged in
can damage the cord, resulting in a fire or causing an electrical
shock.
• ALWAYS unplug the power cord when the printer is not to be
used for an extended period of time.

• NEVER remove any panel or cover unless the procedure is
described in the user’s manual. The printer contains a high-voltage component which can cause an electrical shock.

Use the following precautions when handling the printer supplies
(toner cartridge, drum cartridge, and paper).
• Avoid storing the supplies in any of the following places:
✓A place subject to direct sunlight (the drum cartridge should not
be exposed to fluor escent light, either).
✓A hot place or near an open flame
✓A humid place
✓A dusty place
• Surplus paper, which has been removed from its protective packaging but not yet loaded into the printer tray, should be sealed in
a plastic bag and stor ed in a cool, dark place.
• Use only the toner cartridge and toner specifically designed for
use with this printer.
• Keep supplies out of the reach of children.
• If your hands should come into direct contact with the toner,
wash them with soap and water immediately.

How to Set the Paper Size for Tray 1
After loading the paper into Tray 1, set the corresponding paper size

The default setting for the paper size of Tray 1 is Letter. It is not

placed in Tray 1.

• Labels must be loaded onto Tray 1 (multipurpose tray) only. Do not

• Wearing gloves is recommended when handling transparencies to protect them from becoming soiled with fingerprints and smears.
Dirty transparencies may result in an unsatisfactory printed image.

6. MEMORY MENU
MEMORY MENU is a group that controls context saving (ON, OFF).

A font is a specific group of characters that have common style and
size characteristics. Your printer can store a variety of different
fonts in its memory for printing. Since these fonts reside in printer
memory, they are called resident fonts. This printer uses two types
of resident fonts: scalable fonts and bitmap fonts. In addition to
resident fonts, you can also download non-resident soft fonts for
printing.
Scalable Fonts
Scalable fonts (also called outline fonts) can be enlarged or reduced
(scaled) to suit your printing needs. There are few limitations on
the sizes that you can specify for scalable fonts.
Bitmap Fonts
A bitmap font is stored in printer memory as a set of characters and
symbols with a specific size and unique design. Each bit of the font
is precisely mapped, so this type of font cannot be scaled to
different sizes. This printer maintains 10 TrueType fonts and 35
Intellifont typefaces in memory (when in PCL mode).
Soft Font
A soft font is downloaded from host computer to printer memory as
is required. The selection of both scalable fonts and bitmap fonts
available to the printer can be expanded using soft fonts.

Printer S oftware O verview
The PostScript printer driver was provided by Adobe systems
Incorporated, and allows you take full advantage of your printer’s
features and capabilities using your computer running Windows 95 or
Windows 98.
This section explains the software’s features.
All of the onscreen images that appear in the following sections are
examples of the PostScript Printer Software when installed in a
Windows 95-based operating environment.

Displaying the PostScript Printer Software Window

Choosing Menu Settings
The following standard Windows procedures can be used when
making settings in the printer software’s menu pages.
• Clicking an option button or name
• Clicking a check box
• Dragging the scroll box on a scroll bar
• Clicking a drop-down list box and then clicking on an item to
select it
• Holding down the [Alt] key and typing the underlined character
that represents a setting

• Icons that are in a red circle with a line through the middle represent
available paper/envelope sizes that require additional setting changes.
Such setting changes might be possible through the current Paper dialog box, such as the paper tray setting.
• It is not possible to print legal size, color documents or legal size documents on thick paper.
• Generally, envelopes perform well, but some types may wrinkle. We
strongly recommend testing any type of envelope before buying it in
large amounts.
Layout
The Layout setting allows you to specify the number of documents to
be printed onto a single sheet of paper. You can select to print from
one document (1-Up), two documents (2-Up), four documents (4Up), six documents (6-Up), nine documents (9-Up) or 16 documents

Orientation
Allows you to determine how your document is positioned on the
printed page. Possible settings include Portrait, Landscape and
Landscape Rotated.
This setting can also tell you the measurements of your selected paper
or envelope size. Click and hold on the paper icon to view
dimensions, including the unprintable margins.
Paper source:
This setting identifies the location inside of the printer of the paper to
be used. The various paper source options will be different depending
upon the type of printer and accessories used. Paper sources might
include Auto Select Tray, Tray1, Tray2, Tray3 or Manual Feed. Paper
sources that are not available to your printer are identified by a red
circle with a line through the middle.
By setting the paper source to Auto Select Tray, the printer will

automatically select the paper source according to the paper size of
the document to be printed.
