.
Important information
Refer to the following sections to learn about important safety instructions and how to take care of the product.
Safety information
•Self-measurement means control, not diagnosis or treatment. Your values must always be discussed with your doctor or a physician who is familiar with your family history.
•If you are undergoing medical treatment and receiving medication, consult your doctor to determine the most appropriate time to measure your blood pressure. Never alter the dosages of any medication without direction from your doctor.
•Your blood pressure depends on several factors, such as age, gender, weight, and physical condition. It also depends on the environment and your state of mind at the time of measurement. In general, your blood pressure is lower when you are asleep and higher when you are active. Your blood pressure may be higher when recorded at a hospital or a clinic and may be lower when measured in the relaxing comfort of your home. Due to these variations, we recommend that you record your blood pressure regularly at home as well as at your doctor’s clinic.

•Try to record your blood pressure regularly at the same time of the day and under the same conditions. This will help your physician detect any extreme variations in your blood pressure and thus treat you accordingly. The ideal time to measure your blood pressure is in the morning just after you wake up before breakfast and any physical activity, and in the absence of the urge to urinate. If this is not possible, try to take the measurements later in the morning, before you start any physical activity. Relax for a few minutes before you record your blood pressure.
•Your blood pressure increases or decreases under the following circumstances. Blood pressure is higher than normal:
—when you are excited, nervous, or tense —while taking a bath — during and after exercise or strenuous physical activity — when it is cold —within one hour after meals — after drinking tea, coffee, or other caffeinated drinks — after smoking tobacco —when your bladder is full
•Blood pressure is lower than normal: — after consuming alcohol
—after taking a bath
•Blood pressure measurements determined with this device are equivalent to those obtained by a trained observer using the cuff/stethoscope auscultation method, within the limits prescribed by the American National Standard.
This device is validated against Korotkoff phase I and V for Systolic and Diastolic pressure.
•The pulse display is not suitable for checking the frequency of heart pacemakers.
•If you have been diagnosed with a severe arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat, vascular constriction, liver disorders, or diabetes, have a cardiac pacemaker, or are pregnant, measurements made with this instrument should only be evaluated after consultation with your doctor.
• This product has been designed for adult usage frome 12 years on Consult with a doctor before using it for children. Do not use this product on infants or toddlers.
•This device is not suitable for continuous monitoring of blood pressure during medical emergencies, surgery, or similar situations.

About blood pressure
Your blood pressure level is determined in the
circulatory center of your brain. Your nervous
system allows your body to adapt or alter blood pressure in response to different situations. Your body alters your pulse or heart rate and the width of blood vessels through changes in muscles in the walls of blood vessels. Your blood pressure reading is highest when your heart pumps or ejects blood. This stage is called your Systolic blood pressure. Your blood pressure is lowest when the heart rests (in-between beats). This is called your Diastolic blood pressure.
It is critical to maintain blood pressure values within a “normal” range in order to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Increased blood pressure values (various forms of hypertension) have associated long- and medium-term health risks. These risks concern the arterial blood vessels of your body, which are endangered due to constriction caused by deposits in the vessel walls (arteriosclerosis). A deficient supply of blood to important organs (heart, brain, muscles) can be the result. Furthermore, with long-term increased blood pressure values, the heart will become structurally damaged. There are many different causes of the appearance of high blood pressure. We differentiate between common primary (essential) hypertension, and secondary hypertension. The latter group can be ascribed to specific organic malfunctions. Please consult your doctor for information about the possible origins of your own increased blood pressure values.
Normal blood pressure values
Blood pressure is too high when, at rest, the diastolic pressure is above 90 mmHg or the systolic blood pressure is over 140 mmHg.
If you obtain readings in this range, consult your doctor immediately. High blood pressure values over time can damage blood vessels, vital organs such as the kidney, and your heart.
Should the systolic blood pressure values lie between 140 mmHg and 160 mmHg or the diastolic blood pressure values lie between 90 mmHg and 95 mmHg, likewise, consult your doctor. Regular self-checks will be necessary.
With blood pressure values that are too low (i.e., systolic values under 105 mmHg or diastolic values under 60 mmHg), consult with your doctor.
Even with normal blood pressure values, a regular self-check with your blood pressure monitor is recommended. In this way you can detect possible changes in your values early and react appropriately.

the World Health Organization:
Further information
If your values are mostly "normal” under resting conditions but exceptionally high
under conditions of physical or psychological stress, it is possible that you are suffering from so-called ”labile hypertension”. In any case, please discuss the values with your doctor.
Correctly measured diastolic blood-pressure values above 120mmHg require
immediate medical treatment.

USING THE DEVICE
USING THE DEVICE
This section describes how to get the maximum benefit from your BP3AD1 blood pressure monitor. Follow the instructions carefully to get an accurate measurement of your blood pressure and pulse rate.
Setting the date and time
When you insert the batteries for the first time (see “Inserting the batteries”), the BP3AD1 prompts you to set the current date and time. You can also adjust the date and time at any time by pressing and holding down the time button for over 3 seconds. Follow these steps to set the date and time:
When you replace the batteries, the LCD screen
starts flashing the current year setting. Press the memory button repeatedly to adjust the year and
then press the time button to confirm the setting.
Next, the screen starts flashing the month and date setting. Press the memory button repeatedly to set the month and date, and then press the time button to confirm the settings.
Lastly, the screen starts flashing the hour and minute values. Press the memory button repeatedly to set the hour and minutes and then press the time button to confirm the settings.
Obtaining accurate measurements
Your blood pressure can vary based on numerous factors, physiological conditions, and your surroundings. Follow these guidelines to obtain accurate and error-free measurements of your blood pressure and pulse rate.
Page 12
Before measuring
Avoid eating, smoking as well as all forms of exertion directly before the measurement. All these factors influence the measurement result. Relax by sitting in an armchair in a quiet atmosphere for about 5 minutes before the measurement.
Always take measurements on the same arm (normally left) and in the same posture. Do not switch between right and left arms while recording your blood pressure as there may be a difference of up to 10mmHg pressure between the two arms.
Attempt to carry out the measurements regularly at the same time of day, since blood pressure changes during the course of the day. The ideal time to measure your blood pressure is in the morning after you wake up, before breakfast and physical activity, and in the absence of the urge to urinate.
Rest for 5 minutes sitting quietly and release all the tension in your body — specially the arm muscles — before beginning with the measurement. Remain calm and quiet when the measurement is in process. Do not speak or move your arm (as well as other body) muscles during the process.
Common sources of errors
All efforts by the patient to support the arm can increase the blood pressure. Make sure you
are in a comfortable, relaxed position and do not activate any of the muscles in the measurement arm during the measurement. Use a cushion for support if necessary.
Attention! Comparable blood pressure measurements always require the same conditions with a peaceful and calm environment. Ensure that you take measurements under the same conditions to obtain an accurate estimate of blood pressure variation patterns.
If the arm artery lies considerably lower or higher than the heart, an erroneous value of blood pressure is measured. Each 15 cm difference in height results in a measurement error of 10 mmHg.
A loose cuff causes false measurement values.
With repeated measurements, blood accumulates in the arm, which can lead to false results. Consecutive blood pressure measurements should be repeated after at least a 15 second pause or after the arm has been held up in order to allow the accumulated blood to flow away.

Fitting the cuff
Follow the instructions on the cuff and those described below to fit the cuff around your upper arm correctly.
Remove all jewelry and/or thick clothing from your upper arm and draw the cuff over the arm.
Maintain a distance of approximately 2 ~ 3 cm (1/2 in.) between the cuff and the crook of your elbow.
Secure the cuff with the Velcro fastener so that it is comfortable and not too tight nor too loose. No space should remain between the cuff and the arm.
Lay the arm on a table with the palm upwards so that the cuff is at the same height as the heart.
Connect the other end of the inflating tube to the connector on the blood pressure monitor and start measurement.
Measuring your blood pressure
After following the guidelines described in the previous section and placing the cuff around your upper arm, you are now ready to measure your blood pressure. Follow these steps to record your measurement.
Press the O/I button to turn on the device and start measurement. The LCD screen is turned on. The cuff begins to inflate while the increasing cuff pressure is displayed on the screen. After the suitable inflation pressure is reached, the cuff stops inflating and the pressure gradually falls. A long beep s ounds when the measurement is completed. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure values along with the pulse rate are displayed on the screen. The measurement is displayed for approximately 3 minutes.

AQ) and their
Answers
Answers
How do I know if the device is still accurate after long usage or after being dropped?
Generally, the monitor gives accurate results if it is working. If for
example. the device has been dropped but you cannot detect any malfunction when operating it, there is no need to worry about the accuracy. The main component that mainly influences the accuracy is stored in the computer program. This software either works or doesn’t. Other parts which affect the accuracy such as the deflation valve and the pressure sensor are very well protected against modifications by accidents or ageing.
In any case and in accordance with international standards we
recommed that you ask your authorised Microlife dealer to perform an accuracy check every two years.
Why and when should send the device in for an
accuracy check?
MICROLIFE’S blood pressure monitors are developed to remain
accurate for a long product life. To guarantee this accuarcy we recommend-in accordance with international standards -that you ask your authorised Microlife dealer to perform an accuracy check every 2 years.
The systolic pressure measured by the MICROLIFE
blood pressure monitor is similar to what my doctor measures but why is the diastolic pressure about 10 mmHg higher with the electronic monitor?
The diastolic pressure is very difficult to detect with the
stethoscope and depend very much on the observer capabilities. The correlation of the diastolic pressure is therefore typically more difficult more difficult than the systolic.

How long should I wait between measurements?
If you want to perform several measurements sequentially, you
should wait at least 5 minutes between two measurements. Loosen the cuff during this waiting period to enable a normal blood flow.
How often and when shall I measure my blood
pressure with the MICROLIFE electronic blood pressure monitor?
The more you measure, the better! But as blood pressure is a very
much variable body parameter, be aware that the results are not same. To compare your pressure level between each day, you should preform a daily measurement under comparable living situations. Measure, for example, an hour after you had dinner. Make sure that you feel relaxed and not disturbed by your environment.
What happens if do not place the wrist cuff at heart level?
It is very important that the cuff is positioned at heart level during
measurement. A position ten centimetres higher than heart level means an underestimation by 8 mmHg while 10 centimetres below heart level means 8 mmHg overestimation of the blood pressure.
Can I connect any cuff as long as it fits to the connection port?
MICROLIFE’S blood pressure monitors can only give reliable
results when the device is connected to a MICROLIFE cuff. If your arm circumference is between 22 and 32 cm, you should use the MICROLIFE “M-size” cuff. If it is between 32 and 42 cm, you should use the MICROLIFE “L-size” cuff.
Can I wash the cuff?
No, the cuffs of home monitors are generally not designed to be
washed. This might change the cuff dimensions and lead to a loss in accuracy. But under normal application it is not required to wash the cuff. Spot on the cuff can be removed carefully with a damp cloth and soapsuds.

I already have an AC/AD adapter at home. can I use it or do I need the MICROLIFE adapter?
MICROLIFE’S blood pressure monitors require a very specific
power supply. This can only be guaranteed by the use of batteries or the MICROLIFE AC adapter. The adapter is specifically designed for our products.
Can I use rechargeable batteries?
We do not recommend to use rechargeable batteries for our
devices.Electronic blood pressure monitors requires a specific level of stable power supply. Even fully rechargeable batteries have a lower capacity than non rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries may reach the lowest required power limit for our products much faster than non rechargeable batteries. Users of rechargeable batteries have to charge the batteries therefore very often which does not motivate then to frequently perform home measurements.
Please note that the power supply does not has any influence on
the accuracy! If the power level is too low, the battery signal is shown. As long as the device performs measurement, they are reliable!
Is the MICROLIFE blood pressure monitor waterproof?
No! Also please prevent to store it above 50

What are normal results and when should I see a doctor?
The following table explains the pressure ranges and degree of hypertension according to
the World Health Organization:
It is recommend that you record your blood pressure values frequently and discuss them with
your doctor. If your systolic values are frequently above 130 and/or the diastolic values above 85, you should consult your doctor. It is normal that blood pressure values are sometimes higher and lower and there is no need to worry if the results are sometimes higher than the above limits. But if your pressure is above the limits in most cases, you should consult your doctor.
What is”White Coat Hypertension”?
White Coat Hypertension (WCH) is the popular name for the effect
that the patients blood pressure might be detected on a higher level when the measurement is performed by a doctor (in his typical white coat) or a nurse. This effect is caused because one often can be excited or nervous during such “official” measurements and the pressure will be accordingly higher. The problem is that the person may not have a pressure that is too high under normal conditions but might be diagnosed as hypertensive based on the doctors measurement. Home devices are the best choice to prevent this “white coat effect”. Some long term studies showed that people who have a higher pressure at the doctor also have a high risk to develop hypertension. Thus, these patients should check their pressure frequently.

Kindly fill-in your personal date on the front page.On the following pages, please indicate exact date, time and weight before any measurements. Start with your blood pressure and pulse measurement and pulse measurement. Please fill-in your systolic blood pressure (maximal Value), your diastolic blood pressure ( minimal value) and your pulse rate. After the measurement, kindly combine the systolic and diastolic values as well as the pulse rates with a line (see example). With this method, you may provide an exact overview of your blood pressure / pulse to your doctor.
