Technical Note TN31
21st April 2010
Integrating a SpeakerLink-equipped Meridian Surround Controller into an existing non-SpeakerLink Meridian Digital Theatre system
This technical note adds to the information already provided in the AC12 User Guide, and details the specific installation example where a SpeakerLink-equipped Meridian Surround Controller (here an 861 V6) requires to be connected in a Meridian Digital Theatre system, and the DSP Loudspeakers are already wired with traditional ‘M’ and ‘S’ Leads. This example is typical of a number of current installation projects where customers with established Meridian Digital Theatre systems have traded up older 861 Surround Controllers for the 861 V6. The same principles can be applied in the case of other Meridian SpeakerLink-equipped Surround Controllers.
In this example, the Meridian Digital Theatre includes seven main channels and no subwoofer; however the principles highlighted through this method of connection remain valid in cases both where a Meridian Digital Subwoofer is present, and where there are fewer main channel loudspeakers – for example, a 5.1- or 5.0-channel Meridian Digital Theatre.
As shown in the diagram overleaf, the main wiring structure is unchanged from the original installation: the Master speaker is connected with a 5M lead (the only 5M lead in the system), and returns Comms via a Slave connection to a 511 Slave Patch. All other Loudspeakers are Slaves and are connected with 5S leads.
The 861 V6 is connected to with SpeakerLink to an AC12, which is then used to connect Master Comms and digital audio to the Master speaker via the 5M lead.
Three further AC12s are used to connect digital audio from the 861 V6 plus Slave Comms (distributed by the 511) to each pair of Slave speakers via 5S leads.
This method of system connection offers the best use of existing cabling. Other methods of connection are possible; however this document is intended only to provide this specific example.
Once the system has been connected, perform an ‘Auto Config’ – put the system in to standby and press CLEAR on the MSR+. This provokes a dialogue between all IR receiving products on the Comms bus and assigns one as system ‘Controller’ and the others as ‘Not Controller’.
The Meridian Digital Theatre system is now ready to be configured using the MConfig application, including Calibration and Meridian Room Correction.
