Preface

With this Introduction into Service Manual we are
introducing the new A-Class, model series 176.

The purpose of this brochure is to acquaint you with
the technical highlights of this new vehicle in advance
of its market launch. This brochure is intended to
provide information for people employed in service,
maintenance/repair and for aftersales staff. It is
assumed here that the reader is already familiar with
the Mercedes-Benz model series currently on the
market.

In terms of the contents, the emphasis in this Intro­duction into Service manual is on presenting new and
modified components and systems.

This Introduction into Service Manual is not intended
as an aid for repairs or for the diagnosis of technical
problems. For such needs, more extensive information
is available in the Workshop Information System (WIS)
and Xentry Diagnostics.

WIS is updated continuously. Therefore, the informa­tion available there reflects the latest technical status
of our vehicles.

The Introduction into Service Manual provides initial
information on the on the new A-Class, model series

176. The Introduction into Service Manual is not
stored in this form in WIS. The contents of this
brochure are not updated. No provision is made for
supplements.

We will publicize modifications and new features in the
relevant WIS documents. The information presented in
this Introduction into Service Manual may therefore
differ from the more up-to-date information found in
WIS.

Vehicle concept

The A-Class in model series 176 is based on a new
concept, which differs fundamentally from the
previous A-Class model series 169.

The transversally installed engine is no longer
mounted above the front axle, but ahead of it. The
multilink rear suspension provides high responsive­ness with high driving safety and high comfort.

Numerous special equipment options such as
driving assistance systems make the new A-Class
especially comfortable while also enhancing its
safety level.

Dimensional concept

The change in concept is particularly apparent
when the vehicle dimensions are compared with the
predecessor. The vehicle length has been extended
by 409 mm, the wheelbase by 131 mm. The width
of the vehicle has grown by 16 mm while the vehicle
height has been reduced by 160 mm.

NVH characteristics (Noise, Vibration and
Harshness, i.e. minimization of noise and
vibrations)

crystal.

The panoramic sliding sunroof can be moved to a
tilt position and be opened and closed when in the
sliding position.

The panoramic sliding sunroof and the roller sun
blind are operated using the panoramic sliding
sunroof switch in the overhead control panel.

If the switch is moved to the first notch, the
panoramic sliding sunroof and the roller sun blind
are only adjusted as long as the switch is operated.
If the switch is operated beyond the first notch the
automatic mode is activated and the panoramic
sliding sunroof and roller sun blind are each moved
to their respective end position.

The panoramic sliding sunroof is equipped with an
automatic reversing function. If an object prevents
or restricts the panoramic sliding sunroof from
moving during the closing procedure, the closing
procedure is automatically stopped and the
panoramic sliding sunroof is opened again.

i Note

If the engine is switched off or if the ignition key is
removed, the panoramic sliding sunroof can still
be operated. The function remains available for a
period of five minutes or until a front door is
opened.
