Electronic control units
Electronic control unitsare installed in your vehi‐ cle. Some of these arenecessaryfor thesafe operation of your vehicle, while some assistyou when driving (driver assistance systems). In addi‐ tion, your vehicle provides comfort and entertain‐ mentfunctions, whichare also made possible by electronic controlunits.
The electronic control units containdatamemo‐ ries whichcan temporarily or permanently store technicalinformation aboutthe vehicle's operat‐ ing state, component loads, maintenance require‐ ments and technicaleventsormalfunctions.
In general,this information documents thestate of acomponent part, amodule, asystemorthe surroundingssuchas:

operatingstatesofsystemcomponents (e.g. fluid levels, batterystatus,tirepressure)
R
status messages concerningthe vehicle and its individual components (e.g. number of wheel revolutions/speed, deceleration, lateral acceleration,displayofthe fastened seat belts)
R

R
information on events leading to vehicle dam‐ age
R
system reactionsinspecial drivingsituations (e.g. airbag deployment, intervention of sta‐ bilitycontrol systems)
R
ambient conditions (e.g. temperature, rain sensor)
In addition to providing theactual controlunit function,this dataassists themanufacturer in detecting and rectifying malfunctions and opti‐ mizing vehicle functions. The majority of this data is temporaryand is onlyprocessed in thevehicle itself. Onlyasmall portion of thedataisstoredin theevent or malfunction memory.
When your vehicle is serviced, technicaldata from thevehicle can be read out by service net‐ work employees (e.g. workshops, manufacturers) or thirdparties (e.g. breakdown services). Serv‐
ices include repair services, maintenancepro‐ cesses, warrantyclaimsand quality assurance measures, forexample. The read out is per‐ formed via thelegally prescribed portfor the diagnostics connection in thevehicle. The respectiveservice networklocations or thirdpar‐ ties collect, processand use this data. They document technicalstatuses of thevehicle, assistinfinding malfunctions andimproving qual‐ ity and aretransmitted to themanufacturer,if necessary. Furthermore, themanufacturer is sub‐ ject to product liability.For this, themanufacturer requires technicaldatafromvehicles.
Malfunction memories in thevehicle can be reset by aserviceoutletaspartofrepair or mainte‐ nancework.

Onlineservices
Wireless networkconnection
If your vehicle has awireless networkconnection, datacan be exchanged between your vehicle and other systems. The wireless networkconnection is enabled via thevehicle's transmission and reception unitorvia connected mobile end devi‐ ces (e.g.smartphones). Online functionscan be used via this wireless networkconnection.These include onlineservicesand applications/apps, whichare provided by themanufacturer or by other providers.

Personal identification datamay be used to pro‐ vide online services. The dataexchangefor this takesplace via asecureconnection, e.g. withthe manufacturer's IT systems intended forthe pur‐ pose. The collecting, processing, and use of per‐ sonal identification databeyond theprovision of services occursexclusively on thebasis of alegal permit or afterdue consent.

This vehicle is equipped withanevent data recorder (EDR).The mainpurpose of an EDRisto record, in certaincrash or nearcrash-likesitua‐ tions,suchasanair bag deploymentorhittinga road obstacle, data that will assistinunderstand‐ ing howavehicle's systems performed. The EDR is designed to recorddatarelated to vehicle dynamics and safetysystems forashortperiod of time, typically 30 seconds or less.
The EDR in this vehicle is designed to recordsuch data as:
R
Howvarious systems in your vehicle were operating;
R
Whether or notthe driver and passenger safetybeltswerebuckled/fastened;

Howfastthe vehicle wastraveling.
This datacan help provide abetterunderstanding of thecircumstances in which crashes and inju‐ ries occur.NOTE: EDRdataare recorded by your vehicle only if anon-trivial crash situation occurs; no dataare recorded by theEDR under normal driving conditions and no personal data(e.g. name, gender, ageand crash location) arerecor‐ ded. However, other parties suchaslaw enforce‐ ment could combine theEDR datawiththe type of personally identifying dataroutinelyacquired during acrash investigation.
Access to thevehicle and/or theEDR is needed to read data that is recorded by an EDR, and spe‐ cial equipmentisrequired. In addition to thevehi‐ cle manufacturer,other parties that have thespe‐ cial equipment, suchaslaw enforcement, can read theinformation by accessingthe vehicle or theEDR.
EDRdatamay be used in civil and criminal mat‐ ters as atool in accident reconstruction, accident claims and vehicle safety. Since theCrash Data RetrievalCDR tool that is used to extract data from theEDR is commercially available, Daimler
