With a bloodline tracing directly to winning the ﬁrst oﬃcial auto race, little wonder that the

spirit of competition courses through the SL’s veins. With twin-turbocharging, torque-vectoring

and ﬁve driving modes, an SL makes the rewards of performance feel like a birthright — yours.

The iconic 300 SL Gullwing and Roadster of the 1950s set countless racing records — one of which still stands — with a clever mix of a lightweight aluminum spaceframe and industry-ﬁrst direct fuel injection. This legacy more than lives on in the 2017 SL — it’s grown stronger, faster and more responsive, yet more responsible too. The seductively restyled body is made vir tually entirely of stamped, cast, thermoformed and extruded aluminum — cutting some 300 lbs while increasing torsional rigidity by 20 % compared to the previous SL. You can feel the results in qui ckness, in agility, and even in it s ef ﬁcie ncy.

The SL 450’s V6 and SL 550’s V8 each employ a pair of turbos and a team of advancements to squeeze more po wer fr om ea c h dr o p of ga sol i ne.5 High-pressure Direct Injection — many leaps ahead of the system debuted by the ﬁrst SL — uses “piezoelectric” injectors to spray an ultraﬁne, atomized mist of fuel. Multispark ignition can ﬁre each spark plug up to four times in sequence for more complete and powerful combustion. Both systems adapt in milliseconds, on the ﬂy, to keep performance at its peak even as conditions vary. In raw numbers, the V6

biturbo SL 450 delivers 362 hp, 369 lb -ft of torque, and 0–60 mph in 4.9 seconds.6 The V8 biturbo SL 550 turns 449 hp and 516 lb-ft into a 4.3 -second rush to 60. A new 9G-TRONIC transmission puts nine paddle- shifted speeds at your ﬁngertips, for quicker acceleration, more relaxed cruising, and smoother, swifter gear changes.

The standard semi - active suspension adapts to the road surface and your driving inputs in just 10 milliseconds at each wheel. The avai la bl e Ac ti ve Bod y Control® ( A B C ) is newly enhanced with a CURVE function that can lean into corners — like a motorcyclist or skier — to reduce the lateral forces you feel while raising the fun factor. And standard Torque Vectoring Brake shifts power toward the outside rear wheel for even crisper, quicker cornering.

New DYNAMIC SELECT lets you tune your SL’s driving character settings to your mood. Five modes adapt the throttle response, shift points, steering feel, suspension and more — from Comfort to ECO to Sport+. You can even set up a mode of your very own. An SL may be born to compete, but it’s engineered to win — and win you over.
