Air bags and pyrotechnic Emergency Tensioning Devices (ETDs) contain perchlorate material, which may require special handling and regard for the environment. Check your national disposal guidelines. California residents, see
www.dtsc.ca.gov/HazardousWaste/ Perchlorate/index.cfm.
R
Air bags and ETDs are designed to function on a one-time-only basis. An air bag or ETD that has deployed must be replaced.
R
Do not pass seat belts over sharp edges. They could tear.
R
Do not make any modification that could change the effectiveness of the seat belts.
R
Do not bleach or dye seat belts as this may severely weaken them. In a crash they may not be able to provide adequate protection.
R
No modifications of any kind may be made to any components or wiring of the SRS.
R
Do not change or remove any component or part of the SRS.
R
Do not install additional trim material, seat covers, badges, etc. over the steering wheel hub, front-passenger front air bag cover, outer sides of the seat backrests, door trim panels, or door frame trims.

Air bag system components will be hot after an air bag has inflated. Do not touch them.
R
Never place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in front of the seat.
R
Improper repair work on the SRS creates a risk of rendering the SRS inoperative or causing unintended air bag deployment. Work on the SRS must therefore only be performed by qualified technicians. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
R
For your protection and the protection of others, when scrapping the air bag unit or ETD, our safety instructions must be followed. These instructions are available from any authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
R
Given the considerable deployment speed, required inflation volume, and the material of the air bags, there is the possibility of abrasions or other, potentially more serious injuries resulting from air bag deployment.
If you sell your vehicle, Mercedes-Benz strongly recommends that you inform the subsequent owner that the vehicle is equipped with SRS. Also, refer them to the applicable section in the Operator's Manual.

When the air bags are deployed, a small amount of powder is released. The powder generally does
not constitute a health hazard and does not indicate that there is a fire in the vehicle. In order to prevent potential breathing difficulties, you should leave the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. If you have any breathing difficulty but cannot get out of the vehicle after the air bag inflates, then get fresh air by opening a window or door.
WARNING
G
In order to reduce the potential danger of injuries caused during the deployment of the front air bags, the driver and front passenger must always be correctly seated and wear their seat belts.
For maximum protection in the event of a collision, you must always be in the normal seat position with your back against the backrest.
your seat belt and make sure
Fasten
that it is correctly positioned on your body.
As the air bag inflates with considerable speed and force, a proper seating position and correct positioning of the hands on the steering wheel will help to keep you at a safe distance from the air bag. Occupants who are not wearing their seat belt, are not seated properly or are too close to the air bag can be seriously injured or killed by an air bag, as it inflates with great force instantaneously:
R
sit with the seat belt fastened correctly and in a position that is as upright as possible with your back against the backrest.
R
move the driver's seat as far back as possible, still permitting proper operation of vehicle controls. The distance from the center of the driver's chest to the middle of the air bag cover on the steering wheel must be at least 10 inches (25 cm). You should be able to accomplish this by adjusting the seat and steering wheel. If you have any difficulties, please contact a qualified specialist workshop.
R
do not lean your head or chest close to the steering wheel or dashboard.
R
only hold the steering wheel on the outside. Placing hands and arms inside the rim of the steering wheel can increase the risk and potential severity of hand/arm injuries if the air bag inflates.
R
adjust the front-passenger seat as far back as possible from the dashboard when the seat is occupied.
R
occupants, especially children, should never place their bodies or lean their heads in the area of the door where the side impact air bag and/or head bag inflates. This could result in serious injuries or death should the side impact air bag/head bag be deployed. Always sit as upright as possible, wear the seat belt properly and use an appropriately sized infant restraint, toddler restraint or booster seat recommended for the size and weight of the child.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in severe injuries to you or other occupants.
If you sell your vehicle, it is important that you make the buyer aware of this safety information. Be sure to give the buyer this Operator's Manual.
WARNING
G
If the side impact air bag and/or head bag is deployed
the event of a side impact and the
in front passenger, especially a child, is not properly seated or restrained when next to a side impact air bag/head bag, injuries are possible due to the rapid inflation of the side impact air bag/head bag.
To help avoid the possibility of injury, please follow these guidelines:
(1) Always sit as upright as possible,
and use the seat belts properly. Make sure that children 12 years old and under use an appropriately sized child restraint, infant restraint or booster seat

recommended for the size and weight of the child.
(2) Always wear seat belts properly.
If the air bags are deployed, you will hear a
Safety
bang, and
a small amount of powder may also be released. Only in rare cases will the bang affect your hearing. The powder that is released generally does not constitute a health hazard. The 6 SRS warning lamp lights up.
The air bags are deployed if the air bag control unit detects the need for deployment. Only in the event of such a situation will the air bags provide their supplemental protection.
If the driver and front passenger do not wear their seat belts, it is not possible for the air bags to provide their supplemental protection.
In the event of other types of impacts and impacts below air bag deployment thresholds, the air bags will not deploy. The driver and passengers will then be protected to the extent possible by a properly fastened seat belt. A properly fastened seat belt is also needed to provide the best possible protection in a rollover.
Air bags provide additional protection; they are not, however, a substitute for seat belts. All vehicle occupants must fasten their seat belts.
It is important for your safety and that of your passengers to have deployed air bags replaced and to have any malfunctioning air bags repaired. This will help to make sure the air bags continue to perform their protective function for the vehicle occupants in the event of a crash.
Front air bags
Driver's air bag : deploys in front of the steering wheel; front-passenger front air bag ; deploys
in front of and above the glove
box.
The front air bags increase protection against head and chest injuries.
They are deployed:
R
in the event of certain frontal impacts
R
if the system determines that air bag deployment can offer additional protection to that provided by the seat belt
R
depending on whether the seat belt is being used
R
independently of other air bags in the vehicle
If the vehicle rolls over, the front air bags are generally not deployed. If the system detects high vehicle deceleration in a longitudinal direction, the front air bags are deployed.
Your vehicle has adaptive, two-stage front air bags. In the event of a collision, the air bag control unit evaluates the vehicle deceleration. In the first deployment stage, the front air bag is filled with enough propellant gas to reduce the risk of injuries. The front air bag is fully deployed if a second deployment threshold is exceeded within a few milliseconds.
The deployment of front-passenger front air bag ; is also influenced by the weight category of the front passenger, which is determined by the Occupant Classification System (OCS) (Y page 43).
Page 43
Occupant safety
Information Provided by:

The lighter the passenger side occupant, the higher the vehicle deceleration rate required (predicted at the start of the impact) for second-stage inflation
of the front-passenger front air bag. In the second stage, the front air bags are inflated with the maximum amount of propellant gas available.
The front air bags are not deployed in situations where a low impact severity is predicted. You will then be protected by the fastened seat belt.
Front-passenger front air bag ; will only deploy if:
R
the system, based on the OCS weight sensor readings, has detected that the front-passenger seat is occupied.
R
the ^a indicator lamp on the center console is not lit, (Y page 43)
R
the air bag control unit predicts a high impact severity.

thigh injuries
R
lower leg injuries
Side impact air bags
WARNING
G
The pressure sensors for side impact air bag control are located in the doors. Do not modify any components of the doors or door trim panels including, for example, the addition of door speakers.
Improper repair work on the doors or the modification or doors create a risk of rendering the side impact air bags inoperative or causing unintended air bag deployment. Work on the doors must therefore only be performed by qualified technicians. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

When the OCS senses that the frontpassenger seat occupant is classified as being up to or less than the weight of a typical 12-month-old child in a standard child restraint, the 4 PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp will illuminate when the engine is started and remain illuminated. This indicates that the front-passenger front air bag and the front-passenger knee bag are deactivated.
When the OCS senses that the frontpassenger seat is classified as being empty, the 4 PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp will illuminate when the engine is started and remain illuminated. This indicates that the front-passenger front air bag and the front-passenger knee bag are deactivated.
When the OCS senses that the frontpassenger seat occupant is classified as being heavier than the weight of a typical 12month-old child seated in a standard child restraint or as being a small individual (such as a young teenager or a small adult), the 4 PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp will illuminate for approximately 6

The NECK-PRO head restraints reduce the likelihood of head and chest injuries. The NECK-PRO head restraints on the driver's and front-passenger seats are moved forwards and upwards in the event of a rear-end collision of a certain severity. This provides better head support.
If the NECK-PRO head restraints have been triggered in an accident, reset the NECK-PRO head restraints on the driver’s and frontpassenger seat (Y page 49). Otherwise, the additional protection will not be available in the event of another rear-end collision. You can recognize when NECK-PRO head restraints have been triggered by the fact that they have moved forwards and can no longer be adjusted.

Seat belts

Important safety notes
G
Always fasten your seat belt before driving off. Always make restrained. You and your passenger should always wear seat belts.
Failure to wear and properly fasten and position your seat belt considerably increases your risk of injuries and their likely severity in an accident.
If you are ever in an accident, your injuries could be considerably more severe if you have not fastened your seat belt correctly. If you do not fasten your seat belt, you are much more likely to collide with parts of the vehicle interior or be ejected from it. This may result in serious or fatal injury.
In the same crash, the possibility of serious or fatal injury is considerably reduced if you wear your seat belt properly. The air bags can only offer the intended protection if the occupants are wearing their seat belts properly.

it, the seat belt would apply force at the abdomen or neck. That could cause serious or even fatal injuries. The seat backrest and seat belt provide the best restraint when the wearer is in a position that is as upright as possible and the seat belt is properly positioned on the body.
G
Never let more people ride in the vehicle than there are seat belts available. Make sure everyone riding in the vehicle is correctly restrained with a separate seat belt. Never use time.
G
Always have damaged seat belts or seat belts that have been subjected to a load in an accident replaced and the anchorages checked.
Only use seat belts that have been approved by Mercedes-Benz.
Never tamper with seat belts. This can result in the unintended deployment of the Emergency Tensioning Devices or the failure to deploy when necessary.
Do not bleach or dye seat belts, as this may severely weaken them. In the event of a collision, they may be unable to provide adequate protection.

Proper use of the seat belts
WARNING
G
USE SEAT BELTS PROPERLY
R
Seat belts can only work when used properly. Never way than as described in this section, as that could result in serious injuries in the event of an accident.
R
Each occupant should wear their seat belt at all times, because seat belts help reduce the likelihood of and potential severity of injuries in accidents, including rollovers. The integrated restraint system includes SRS (driver front air bag, knee bags, frontpassenger front air bag, side impact air bags, head air bags), Emergency Tensioning Devices (ETDs) and seat belt force limiters. The system is designed to enhance the protection offered to properly belted occupants in certain frontal (front air bags, knee bags and ETDs) and side (side impact air bags, head air bags and ETDs) impacts which exceed preset deployment thresholds.
R
Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm, across your neck or off your shoulder. In a frontal crash, your body would move too far forward. That would increase the chance of head and neck injuries. The seat belt would also apply too much force to the ribs or abdomen, which could severely injure internal organs such as your liver or spleen.
Adjust the seat belt so that the shoulder section is located as close as possible to the middle of the shoulder (it should not touch the neck).
wear seat belts in any other
Page 53
R
Information Provided by:
Position the lap belt as low as possible on your hips and not across the abdomen. If the lap belt is positioned across your abdomen, it could cause serious injuries in a crash.
R
Never wear seat belts over rigid or breakable objects in or on your clothing, such as eyeglasses, pens, keys etc., as these might cause injuries.
R
Make sure the seat belt is always fitted snugly. Take special care of this when wearing loose clothing.
R
Never use a seat belt for more than one person at a time. Do not fasten a seat belt around a person and another person or other objects at the same time.
R
Seat belts should not be worn twisted. In a crash, you would not have the full width of the seat belt to distribute impact forces. The twisted seat belt against your body could cause injuries.
R
Pregnant women should also always use a lap-shoulder belt. The lap belt portion should be positioned as low as possible on the hips to avoid any possible pressure on the abdomen.
R
Place the seat backrest in a position that is as upright as possible.
R
Check your seat belt during travel to make sure it is properly positioned.
R
Never place your feet on the instrument panel, dashboard, or on the seat. Always keep both feet on the floor in front of the seat.
R
When using a seat belt to secure infant restraints, toddler restraints, or children in booster seats, always follow the child seat manufacturer's instructions.
WARNING
G
Do not pass seat belts over sharp edges. They could tear.
Do
allow the seat belt to get caught in the
not door or in the seat adjustment mechanism. This could damage the seat belt.
Occupant safety
Never attempt to make modifications to seat belts. This could impair the effectiveness of the seat belts.

WARNING
G
Children 12 years old and under must be seated and properly secured in an appropriately sized infant restraint, child restraint system, or booster seat recommended for the size and weight of the child. For additional information, see the "Children in the vehicle" section.

Tensioning Devices and belt force limiters.
The ETDs tighten the seat belts in an accident, pulling them close against the body.
The ETDs do not correct incorrect seat positions or incorrectly fastened seat belts.
The ETDs do not pull vehicle occupants back towards the backrest.
When triggered, seat belt force limiters help to reduce the peak force exerted by the seat belt on the vehicle occupant.
The seat belt force limiters are synchronized with the front air bags, which take on a part of the deceleration force. Thus, the force exerted on the occupant is distributed over a greater area.
The ETDs can only be activated when:

Important safety notes

If you fail to adapt your driving style or become distracted, the driving safety systems can neither reduce the risk of accident nor override the laws of physics. Driving safety systems are merely aids designed to assist driving. You are responsible for the distance to the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed and for braking in good time.
Always adapt your driving style to suit the prevailing road and weather conditions and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Drive carefully.
i
The driving safety systems described only work as effectively as possible when there is adequate contact between the tires and the road surface. Please pay special attention to the notes on tires, recommended minimum tire tread depths, etc. (Y page 526).
In wintry driving conditions, always use winter tires (M+S tires) and if necessary, snow chains. Only in this way will the driving safety systems described in this section work as effectively as possible.

When ABS is malfunctioning, other systems, including driving safety systems, will also become inoperative.
Observe the information on the ABS warning lamp (Y page 257) and display messages which may be shown in the instrument cluster (Y page 224).
Safety
ABS regulates brake pressure in such a way that the wheels do not lock when you brake. This allows you to continue steering the vehicle when braking.
ABS works from a speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h) upwards, regardless of road-surface conditions. ABS works on slippery surfaces, even if you only brake gently.
The yellow ! ABS warning lamp in the instrument cluster lights up when the ignition is switched on. It goes out when the engine is running.
Brakes
X
If ABS intervenes: continue
to depress the brake pedal vigorously until the braking situation is over.
X
To make a full brake application:
depress the brake pedal with full force.
If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel a pulsing in the brake pedal.
The pulsating brake pedal can be an indication of hazardous road conditions, and functions as a reminder to take extra care while driving.

BAS (Brake Assist System)

WARNING
G
If BAS is malfunctioning, the braking distance in an emergency braking situation is increased. There is a risk of an accident.
In an emergency braking situation, depress the brake pedal with full force. ABS prevents the wheels from locking.
quickly, BAS automatically boosts the braking force,
thus
shortening the stopping distance.
The brakes will function as usual once you release the brake pedal. BAS is deactivated.

BAS PLUS (Brake Assist System Plus)

BAS PLUS is only available in vehicles equipped with DISTRONIC PLUS.
BAS PLUS provides braking assistance in hazardous situations at speeds greater than 4 mph (7 km/h) and uses radar sensor technology to assess the traffic situation.
With the
help of the radar sensor system, BAS PLUS can detect obstacles that are in the path of your vehicle for an extended period of time.
At speeds up to 40 mph (70 km/h), BAS PLUS may also detect stationary obstacles, for example, stopped or parked vehicles.
To prevent a front-end collision, BAS PLUS calculates the brake force necessary if:
R
you approach an obstacle, and
R
BAS PLUS has detected a risk of collision
At a speed greater than 20 mph (30 km/h): if you depress the brake sharply,
BAS PLUS automatically raises the brake pressure to a value adapted to the traffic situation.
At a speed less than 20 mph (30 km/h): if you depress the brake, BAS PLUS is activated. The increase in brake pressure will be carried out at the last possible moment.
If BAS PLUS demands particularly high braking force, preventative passenger protection measures (PRE-SAFE®) are activated simultaneously.
X
Keep the brake pedal depressed until the emergency braking situation is over. ABS prevents the wheels from locking.
BAS operates in emergency braking situations. If you depress the brake pedal

BAS PLUS is deactivated and the brakes function as usual, if:
R
you release the brake pedal.
R
there is
no longer any danger of a rear-end
collision.
R
no obstacle is detected in front of your vehicle.
For BAS PLUS to assist you when driving, the radar sensor system must be switched on and operational. You will find further information under the keyword "Radar sensor system”.
If the radar sensor system is malfunctioning, BAS PLUS will not be available. The brake system is still available with complete brake boosting effect and BAS.
WARNING
G
BAS PLUS cannot always clearly identify objects and complex traffic situations. BAS PLUS cannot intervene in these cases. There is a risk of an accident.
Always pay careful attention to the traffic situation and be ready to brake.
In particular, the detection of obstacles can be impaired if there is:
R
dirt on the sensors or anything else covering the sensors
R
snow or heavy rain
R
interference by other radar sources
R
the possibility of strong radar reflections, for example in parking garages
R
a narrow vehicle traveling in front, e.g. a motorbike
R
a
traveling in front on a different line
vehicle
relative to the center of your vehicle
WARNING
G
BAS PLUS does not react:
R
to people or animals
R
to oncoming vehicles
R
to crossing traffic
R
when cornering
As a result, BAS PLUS may not intervene in all critical situations. There is a risk of an accident.
Always pay careful attention to the traffic situation and be ready to brake.
Following damage to the front end of the vehicle, have
the configuration and operation of the radar sensors checked at a qualified specialist workshop. This also applies to collisions at low speeds where there is no visible damage to the front of the vehicle.
i
This device has been approved by the FCC as a "Vehicular Radar System". The radar sensor is intended for use in an automotive radar system only. Removing, altering or tampering with the device will void any warranties, and is not permitted by the FCC. Do not tamper with, alter, or use the device in any non-approved way.
Any unauthorized modification to this device could void the user's authority to operate the equipment.

ESP® (Electronic Stability Program)

Important safety notes
!
Switch the ignition off when:
R
the electric
parking brake is being tested
using a brake dynamometer.
R
the vehicle is being towed with the rear axle raised.
Application of the brakes by ESP® may otherwise destroy the brake system.

ADAPTIVE BRAKE

ADAPTIVE BRAKE enhances braking safety and offers increased braking comfort. In addition to the braking function, ADAPTIVE BRAKE also has the HOLD function (Y page 176) and hill start assist (Y page 138).

PRE-SAFE® Brake

PRE-SAFE® Brake
is only available in vehicles
with DISTRONIC PLUS.
PRE-SAFE® Brake can help you to minimize the risk of a collision with a vehicle ahead or reduce the effects of such a collision. If PRESAFE® Brake has detected a risk of collision, you will be warned visually and acoustically as well as by automatic braking. PRE-SAFE Brake cannot prevent a collision without your intervention.
Starting at a speed of around 4 mph (7 km/h), this function warns you if you very quickly approach a vehicle in front. An intermittent warning tone will then sound and the · distance warning lamp will light up in the instrument cluster.
X
Brake immediately in order to increase the distance from the vehicle in front.
or
X
Take evasive action provided it is safe to do so.
From a speed of approximately 4 mph
7 km/h), if the driver and passengers
(
have fastened their seat belts, PRE-SAFE
Brake can brake the vehicle automatically at speeds up to approximately 124 mph (200 km/h).
Due to the nature of the system, particularly complicated driving conditions may cause unnecessary warnings or the unnecessary intervention of PRE-SAFE® Brake.
You can end PRE-SAFE® Brake
intervention in
a non-critical driving situation at any time by:
R
depressing the accelerator pedal further
R
activating kickdown
R
releasing the brake pedal.
The braking action of PRE-SAFE® Brake is ended automatically if:
R
you maneuver to avoid the obstacle.
R
there is no longer any danger of a rear-end collision.
R
there is no longer an obstacle detected in front of your vehicle.
With the help of the radar sensor system, PRE-SAFE® Brake can detect obstacles that are in front of your vehicle for an extended period of time.
At speeds up to approximately
40 mph (70 km/h), PRE-SAFE® Brake can also detect stationary obstacles such as stopped or parked vehicles.
If you approach an obstacle and PRE-SAFE Brake detects a risk of a collision, the system will alert you both visually and acoustically. If you do not brake or take evasive action, the system will warn you by automatically braking the vehicle gently. If there is an increased risk of collision, preventative passenger protection measures (PRE-SAFE®) are activated (Y page 48).
If, at speeds over 20 mph (30 km/h), a risk of collision remains and you do not brake, take evasive action or significantly accelerate, automatic braking may be performed up to a level of automatic emergency braking. Automatic emergency braking is not performed until immediately prior to an accident that can no longer be avoided.
