It began with a racecar whose design was so focused on its purpose, it
would forever change the course of performance. With an aerodynamic
body wrapped around a lightweight aluminum spaceframe, the SL racecar
of 1952 would establish records that have yet to be broken. Its startling
“gullwing” doors were created not to turn heads but accommodate them,
so its driver could enter quickly over the wide sills while wearing a racing
helmet. As it collected trophies around the world, it also won the affection
of the public, who clamored for a version of their own — and a sports-car
legend was born. Six decades of breakthroughs later, the 2013 SL- Class
reaffirms its sporting roots — with advanced performance engineering
enveloped within an all-new aluminum body, a first for an SL. It’s lighter
and more powerful, for quickness and agility. Yet it’s stronger and more
efficient, for remarkable civility. Simply put, it’s designed to conquer the
open road like never before. And capture your heart as only an SL can.

NEW RESPECT FOR THE SKY.
A roadster earns its place in your heart by the way it takes to its place on earth: The blue sky above. The blacktop below. And the seamless
sensation that, in between them, there is only you and your SL. Dispatch its standard Panorama roof into the trunk, and in 16 seconds the new
SL-Class delivers the atmosphere. Call upon its twin -turbocharged engine, and in less than five seconds the stratosphere feels like it’s yours
as well. Horsepower and torque reach heavenly new peaks, yet its earthly delights are equally rewarding: Greater efficiency. Cleaner emissions.
And a superlatively balanced chassis that feels bonded to the road notonly by design and physics, but by desire and passion as well.

SINCE THE GULLWING, WHAT HAS EARNED EVERY SL THE
STATUS OF DESIGN ICON ISNOT HOW IT LOOKS, BUT WHY.
ONCE AGAIN, ITS STYLE IS THE ILLUMINATION OF ITS SOUL.
The original SL was named for the principal character trait sought by its creators: “super
light.” It was conceived to excel as a racecar, and its radical aesthetics merely reflected
the exceptional athleticism of its aluminum spaceframe and tautly drawn steel skin. The
highly rigid yet lightweight aluminum body of the 2013 SL writes an exciting new chapter in
this legacy of performance — along with noteworthy advances in safety, efficiency and even
comfort. From its timeless grille to its tapering LED taillamps, its sweeping shape and artful
details bring every function to fruition in seductive style. Its exquisitely crafted cabin exudes
elegance in motion, even standing still — from the contours of its new electronic shifter to its
heat-reflecting, hand-fitted leather. With a beauty that radiates from far beneath its sculpted
shape, the all-new SL reflects not merely its history, but its lifelong goal of making history.
Lightened. The SL body is constructed almost entirely
from five different types of aluminum — diecast, chilledcast, extruded, thermoformed and stamped. Though
nearly 300 lbs lighter, it achieves 20% greater torsional
rigidity, along with class-leading aerodynamics.
Luminous.Flowingly detailed Bi-Xenon headlamps flood the road with bright white light and continuously adapt
to the curvature of the road and oncoming traffic. All
other exterior lighting, from the Daytime Running Lamps
to the central backup lamp, utilize advanced LEDs.
Radiant. With a lightweight magnesium frame and tinted
skylight, the standard Panorama roof brightens the cabin
while helping lower the car’s center of gravity. Even with
the power top stowed beneath the composite trunklid,
the roomy luggage compartment can hold two golf bags.
Brilliant. Intriguing to the eye and inviting to the hand,
the aluminum and leather electronic shifter is a decidedly
modern centerpiece to the classic two-seat cockpit. Like
every driving control in the SL, the shifter responds with
immediate feedback and impeccable precision.

ALL FOR THE SIMPLE JOYS OF DRIVING.
For as long as there have been sports cars, their joys have been best achieved from some basic principles:
an ideal balance of power and weight, and a clear connection between driver and driving. As time marched
on, modern demands for safety, comfort and efficiency made this timeless formula an increasingly complex
equation. With the 2013 SL 550, purity and progress achieve new harmony. Its aluminum body, twin- turbo
V- 8, semi - active suspension and adaptive brakes deliver the data: Nearly 50 more horsepower and 125 lb- ft
more torque whisk a car that’s almost 300 lbs lighter to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds2 — all with improved
fuel economy4 and cleaner emissions. But more important than the figures is the feeling they inspire. For
that, you must take its thick steering wheel in hand, plant its 18" tires into a curve, and revel in the whirr of
its turbos and the growl of its dual exhausts. Every sensation will add up to a simple result: Pure driving fun.
Pure power. The new -generation 4.6-liter V-8 of the SL 550
creates more power from smaller displacement, with less
fuel and fewer emissions. Twin intercooled turbochargers
spin up to 150,000 rpm to boost its peak output to 429 hp
and 516 lb- ft of torque. High - pressure Direct Injection and
a rapid-multispark ignition manage fuel, air and spark with
millisecond - quick timing and molecular precision.
Clear change. The 7-speed automatic has been reengineered
for quicker, smoother shifting. An electronic shift lever in the
console and paddle shifters on the steering wheel respond
with a snap of your fingers. Driver-adaptive logic and three
selectable modes — Sport, ECO and Manual — suit your driving
style. And a new fuel - saving ECO - Stop/Start system can
automatically shut off the engine when you’re idling, then
instantly restart it as you lift your foot from the brake pedal.
Crisp control. The 4-wheel multilink suspension’s semi-active
Adaptive Damping System continually adjusts to driving inputs
and the road surface. Using a network of sensors, the system
can respond at each wheel in just 10 milliseconds, to sharpen
handling while the ride stays silky. Sport and Comfort modes
are driver -selectable. New electromechanical power steering
with our Direct - steer system optimizes high- speed stability and
feedback, yet makes low -speed maneuvers and parking easier.
True traction. Staggered 18" alloy wheels and tires1 are wider
at the rear axle, for maximum grip during acceleration with
precise steering feedback at all times. Optional 19" wheels
are also available. Large 13.5" perforated front brake discs
are emphatically clasped by 4-piston fixed - type calipers. And
a new Torque Vectoring Brake system enhances grip in hard
corners by shifting torque toward the outside rear wheel.
