THE 2018 S‑CLASS

The last time you went to a school science

fair, you were competing with homemade

volcanoes and a clock powered by a potato.

Tonight, you’re here at the request of your

niece , and what you’re disc overing most is

th at ti mes sure have cha nge d. Th e kid s are

writing code, not peeling potatoes, and any

fake lava tonight will be erupting from an

accurately 3D- printed miniature of Kilauea.

The students and adults shufﬂe from one

display to another, each one brieﬂy earning

their ﬁxation. A few garner audible gasps

of amazement. At one end of the gym, an

army of trophies stands on a table — rows of

little golden soldiers, and a few tall ones.

Even from a distance, it’s pretty easy to

calculate that no kid will be going home

empty - handed tonight. It makes you sigh

a little, but only until you realize it’s the

only display that all the kids are ignoring.

And you go back to being amazed.

Year after year, the S-Class

stays true to its mission:

After the fair, you walk with your niece to

the parking lot. Some parents are quietly

holding trophies. The students carry their

projects. They’re all still excitedly talking

to each other about them — and you join in.

As you reach your car, one of them notices

with their glow. “Whoa !” he gasps. “Is this

the one with the hot stone massage? And

aroma therapy?” Your niece rolls her eyes,

with the turn signal,” she tells him. “And it

uses GPS to adjust the cruise control.”

On the drive home, you and your niece talk

safer, or healthier, or just more enjoyable.

It’s clear she’s inspired to improve not just

she’s been studying up on your S - Class.

your speed5 — felt totally natural. You knew

it wasn’t auto - pilot, staying extra -focused

in situations like offramps — when the sud-

den lack of a car in front told the radar to

re sume yo ur set sp eed, ev en thou gh it was

time to slow down. But today, you watch as

your new S-Class slows for the exit on its

cruise control* know to slow for an exit or

tollbooth is just one. Also onboard, based

on how your car is equipped,* are systems

that use multirange radar, cameras, ultra-

sonic waves, fast computers and more to

help detect a range of hazards6: Perhaps

it’s a car you’re closing in on too quickly.

Or a pedestrian in a city crosswalk. A deer

in the darkness. A car about to rear- end

yours. Or you, making an evasive move, or

couple seated next to you at a recent con-

cert. Gazing into each others’ eyes, they

both laughed and said, in unison, “The

old-fashioned way. Online.” It started you

perforations in each seat without touching

them. If you took a factory tour, you’d see

HANDS‑ON CONTROL

The standard shift paddles let you take

charge of the sporty 9-speed transmission*

without taking a hand from the wheel.

You can even downshift multiple gears

at once, for immediate passing response.

To restore fully automatic shifting, you can

squeeze and hold the “plus” paddle, or just

leave both paddles alone for a few seconds.

SCROLL, SWIPE, SELECT

The right Touch Control Button operates the

12.3" central screen. Intuitive menus make

it easy to enjoy the abundant audio options,

the standard COMAND® navigation, and

countless comfort settings from seating to

climate to 64-color LED ambient lighting.

UNDER YOUR THUMB

The left Touch Control Button operates the

illustrated menu display in the instrument

cluster. You can customize vehicle settings,

call up trip data, activate driving assists,

and scroll through displays to show the info

you use most, from audio to navigation.7

Cruise controls are on the left spoke, too.

TOUCH OR NO TOUCH

Additional multifunction controls let you

adjust or mute the audio volume, use the

hands-free Bluetooth® system, or access a

programmable one-button favorite. Or you

can access and adjust a variety of features

with voice commands. The system can

even learn your natural way of speaking.

FINISHED TO FIT

Supple Nappa leather is hand-stitched to the rim

of the standard steering wheel, accented on some

models with hand-polished wood or — on some

AMG models — grippy DINAMICA microsuede.

Heating of the rim is also available, while the

driver-seat memory recalls the wheel’s position.
