Checking Crash Shut-Off Relay (Model 170 w/111.943/973)
1 Disconnect connector on crash shut-off relay. 2 Switch on ignition.
Connect multimeter to pin 3 (c. 15) on crash shut-off relay connector and battery ground W1O. Nominal value: Test step 1 11-14V

Diagram System
Wiring diagrams are divided into systems. The layout of the system diagram contains all components of the system (ie: control modules, sensors, voltagesupply, fuse connection, etc.).
For easier comprehension, some system diagrams may be depicted in multiple articles (Part 1, Part 2, etc.). In addition, the subsequent diagrams mayshow wire leads which direct you, by means of an arrow, to a different "part" within that system.
For example: X4/25 (2) II
The X4/25 (2) indicates that the wire continues to component/connector X4/25, pin 2 and the Roman Numeral II indicates that this component and it'swiring may be found in Part 2 of the diagram for the same component/system. (III would direct you to part 3 and so forth.)
Variations in wiring or componentry which are model specific, or due to engine variations or equipment levels are enclosed by a dashed box. Phase-in changes in variations are denoted with (1) and (2).
Components/wiring for California vehicles are indicated by the callout U2 in the upper left hand corner of a dashed box. The callout U2 is thenreferenced in the legend (component index) as valid for USA California.
Connector sleeves (Z) are replaced by a twin-connection when applicable.Z1 and Z2 are parallel Z splices with the same voltage potential.Actual cross section of wire may differ from values shown in wiring diagram.Changes in cross section of wire will be shown framed.The information for option variations (i.e. ->95 and 96->) denotes: end of MY 1995 and beginning of MY 1996 (respectively).

TESTING FOR VOLTAGE
Voltage Check
1. Connect one lead of a test light to a known good ground. When using a voltmeter, be sure the voltmeter's negative lead is connected to ground.
2. Connect the other lead of the test light or voltmeter to a selected test point (connector or terminal).
3. If the test light illuminates, there is voltage present. When using a voltmeter, note the voltage reading.
TESTING FOR CONTINUITY
Continuity Check through a Switch
1. Remove the fuse to the circuit involved.
2. Connect one lead of a self-powered test light or ohmmeter to one end of the part of the circuit you wish to test.
3. Connect the other lead to the other end of the circuit.
4. If the self-powered test light glows, there is continuity. When using an ohmmeter, low or no resistance means good continuity.

Voltage Drop Test
This test checks for voltage being lost along a wire, or through a connection or switch.
1. Connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to the end of the wire (or to one side of the connection or switch) which is closer to the Battery.
2. Connect the negative lead to the other end of the wire (or the other side of the connection or switch).
3. Operate the circuit.
4. The voltmeter will show the difference in voltage between the two points.
TESTING FOR SHORT TO GROUND
Testing for Short with Test Light or Voltmeter
With a Test Light or Voltmeter
1. Remove the blown fuse and disconnect the load.
2. Connect a test light or voltmeter across the fuse terminals (be sure that the fuse is powered).

3. Beginning near the Fuse Block, wiggle the harness from side to side. Continue this at convenient points (about 6 inches apart) while watching thetest light or voltmeter.
4. When the test light glows, or the voltmeter registers, there is a short to ground in the wiring near that point.

Testing for Short with Self-Powered Test Light or Ohmmeter
With a Self-Powered Test Light or Ohmmeter
1. Remove the blown fuse and disconnect the Battery and load.
2. Connect one lead of a self-powered test light or ohmmeter to the fuse terminal on the load side.
3. Connect the other lead to a known good ground.
4. Beginning near the Fuse Block, wiggle the harness from side to side. Continue this at convenient points (about 6 inches apart) while watching theself-powered test light or ohmmeter.
5. When the self-powered test light glows, or the ohmmeter registers, there is a short to ground in the wiring near that point.
Fuses Powering Several Loads
1. Open the first connector or switch leading from the fuse to each load.
2. Replace the fuse.^
If the fuse blows, the short is in the wiring leading to the first connector or switch. Use a test light or meter as described previously.
^ If fuse does not blow, refer to next step.

Close each connector or switch until the fuse blows in order to find which circuit the short is in. Connect test lamp or meter at the connector to thesuspect circuit (disconnected) rather than at the fuse terminals.

Keyless Entry Module: Description and Operation
Infrared remote control module (N54) up to 11/94, (USA) (J) up to 08/95
The control module is located on the control module panel in the trunk. The electrical connection is provided with an installation and removal aid. Towithdraw, press locking lug and pull up coupling on the cable side. When replacing the control module or the transmitter, always indicate the locking mechanism number since both parts are matched to one another.
Infrared remote control module (N54) as of 12/94, (USA) (J) as of 09/95
The control module is located on the foot panel in the front passenger's footwell. The 12-pin electrical connection is provided with an installation andremoval device. To remove, press the stop notch and fold the clip over. The 2-pin electrical connection is secured with a locking device. To remove,press the stop notch and push the locking device to one side.

Relay Module: Diagnostic Aids TROUBLESHOOTING TEST PROCEDURES
TESTING FOR VOLTAGE
Voltage Check
1. Connect one lead of a test light to a known good ground. When using a voltmeter, be sure the voltmeter's negative lead is connected to ground.
2. Connect the other lead of the test light or voltmeter to a selected test point (connector or terminal).
3. If the test light illuminates, there is voltage present. When using a voltmeter, note the voltage reading.
TESTING FOR CONTINUITY
Continuity Check through a Switch
1. Remove the fuse to the circuit involved.
2. Connect one lead of a self-powered test light or ohmmeter to one end of the part of the circuit you wish to test.
3. Connect the other lead to the other end of the circuit.
4. If the self-powered test light glows, there is continuity. When using an ohmmeter, low or no resistance means good continuity.

Voltage Drop Test
This test checks for voltage being lost along a wire, or through a connection or switch.
1. Connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to the end of the wire (or to one side of the connection or switch) which is closer to the Battery.
2. Connect the negative lead to the other end of the wire (or the other side of the connection or switch).
3. Operate the circuit.
4. The voltmeter will show the difference in voltage between the two points.

With a Test Light or Voltmeter
1. Remove the blown fuse and disconnect the load.
2. Connect a test light or voltmeter across the fuse terminals (be sure that the fuse is powered).

Fuses Powering Several Loads
1. Open the first connector or switch leading from the fuse to each load.
2. Replace the fuse.^
If the fuse blows, the short is in the wiring leading to the first connector or switch. Use a test light or meter as described previously.

Close each connector or switch until the fuse blows in order to find which circuit the short is in. Connect test lamp or meter at the connector to thesuspect circuit (disconnected) rather than at the fuse terminals.

Keyless Entry Module: Description and Operation
Infrared remote control module (N54) up to 11/94, (USA) (J) up to 08/95
The control module is located on the control module panel in the trunk. The electrical connection is provided with an installation and removal aid. Towithdraw, press locking lug and pull up coupling on the cable side. When replacing the control module or the transmitter, always indicate the locking mechanism number since both parts are matched to one another.
Infrared remote control module (N54) as of 12/94, (USA) (J) as of 09/95
The control module is located on the foot panel in the front passenger's footwell. The 12-pin electrical connection is provided with an installation andremoval device. To remove, press the stop notch and fold the clip over. The 2-pin electrical connection is secured with a locking device. To remove,press the stop notch and push the locking device to one side.
