1. INTRODUCTION
Memorex designed the Ultra TravelDrive Portable Hard Drive to make backing up critical files from priceless
digital photos to important documents as quick, safe, and easy as possible. It works either as a simple portable USB
hard drive or with its bundled TotalMedia Backup software as a complete system to help ensure that you never lose your
critical data.
2. SAFETY & HANDLING GUIDELINES
The design of the Ultra TravelDrive is meant for stationary use. It incorporates a high performance magnetic disk drive
and requires precautions in use:
• DO NOT STORE OR USE in areas exceeding 115° F. / 45° C. or below 40° F. / 4° C. If moving quickly from a cold
to warm environment or from a warm to cold environment, allow the drive to adjust to the new temperature to avoid problems with condensation.
• DO NOT USE AT ALTITUDES greater than 10,000 ft / 3,050 m or more than 200 ft / 60 m below sea level unless you are in a pressurized environment such as a commercial airplane. The drive head relies on normal air pressure
to operate properly.
• DO NOT REMOVE, BUMP, or JAR the drive while it is in operation.
• DO NOT DISCONNECT the cables or power cords until the device has been properly disconnected from the
computer through the computer’s operating system.
ENGLISH
• KEEP AWAY from excessive moisture or exposure to liquids. If liquid is spilled into the drive, immediately unplug it from the computer and drain and/or thoroughly dry off the drive before attempting to reconnect to a computer.
CAUTION: Reconnecting your drive after it has had liquid spilled into and/or onto it, may cause damage to your computer and/or connector ports if the drive was permanently damaged when it got wet and/or if it is not thoroughly dry
before connecting.
• MAKE SURE YOUR HANDS ARE DRY when plugging or unplugging the device into a computer.
• DO NOT SUBJECT to excessive force or impact.
• DO NOT BLOCK air flow around the drive or stack anything on top of it. Doing so may cause the drive to over
heat, and too much weight may damage the drive.
• KEEP AWAY from strong magnetic fields such as powerful electric motors. Excessive magnetic fields can erase data on the drive.
• DO NOT dismantle the drive—there are no serviceable parts inside, and dismantling will void your warranty.
• CLEAN the device only when it is unplugged from a computer. Use a damp, lint-free cloth and prevent moisture
from getting into any openings. Do not use any sprays or solvents to clean the device.
3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Memorex Ultra TravelDrive is a portable storage device that fits in the palm of your hand. It incorporates a
2.5-inch hard drive available in various capacities in an ergonomic and stylish design that can be personalized with
interchangeable, nature-inspired color faceplates. Its plug-and-play USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface allows it to
function as an external drive when connected to an available USB port. Your computer easily recognizes the Ultra
TravelDrive once it is inserted into your USB connection, and an LED on the rear identifies the USB port as either the
high-speed USB 2.0 or the slower 1.1 USB version. You can drag and drop files to or from the Ultra TravelDrive just as
you would to a floppy disk or a hard drive with the added benefit of a faster, far more secure and portable data storage
solution than most other previous alternatives. The included TotalMedia software makes backing up critical data as easy
as pressing a button on the Ultra TravelDrive.

7. REFORMATTING THE ULTRA TRAVELDRIVE
A. Windows
The Memorex Ultra TravelDrive comes pre-formatted with FAT32 (File Allocation Table 32-bit) File System. FAT32 is
the standard file system for Windows 98SE and Me and is supported in Windows 2000, XP and Vista. However,
FAT32 file system has 4GB limitation for the largest supported file. If you need to use the Ultra TravelDrive on a
computer that requires Windows NTFS (NT File System), you need to reformat the drive. To reformat the Ultra
TravelDrive to a NTFS file system:
ENGLISH
IMPORTANT NOTE: Reformatting permanently erases all the data on the Ultra TravelDrive, and you will lose any files
that have not been copied to another hard disk or to an optical disc. This is considered a procedure for ADVANCED
USERS, and extreme caution should be applied before performing this operation.
1. Save all files on the Ultra TravelDrive to another medium such as a hard drive, a flash card, or an optical disc.
Reformatting permanently erases all the data on your drive and you will lose any unsaved files.

would destroy all files stored on those drives and require reinstalling your operating system.
b. Close “My Computer.”
3. Insert your Ultra TravelDrive, wait for the computer to detect it and activate it.
a. Double-click on the “My Computer” icon on the desktop again and compare the listing of the hard
drives in your system with those that you have written down. The new drive that appears is the Ultra
TravelDrive.

ENGLISH
The Utlra TravelDrive should be mounted as “Untitled” after following the above steps.
NOTE: Once you have changed the format of the Ultra TravelDrive from NTFS to another format, it may not be able to
be used on a PC. It will become a Mac-only device.
9. TROUBLESHOOTING:
A. The blue Power and Activity LED does not light up.
This means that the Ultra TravelDrive is not receiving power from the USB port. Check to see if the computer
recognizes the device as attached and active. In Windows®, double-click the “My Computer” icon to bring up a
list of active drives. If your Ultra TravelDrive does not appear there, use the auxiliary USB power cable that is
included with the Ultra TravelDrive to provide additional power.
B. The Ultra TravelDrive appears to be full, but I can’t find any files on it.
The files may have been corrupted if data were interrupted during a transfer, either by too early a removal or by
a power interruption. Restart your computer and attempt to access your drive. Otherwise, you may need to
attempt to use some recovery software to rescue some files on the drive. Memorex at this time does not have
specific software that it can endorse or support to perform this operation. If this is not required or the files on
your drive are not needed, you will have to reformat your Ultra TravelDrive to regain its fully functionality.
C. The computer tells me that I have a high-speed device connected to a low-speed port.
Windows XP will display this message if a device capable of USB 2.0 speeds is inserted into a slower USB 1.1
port. Check your computer manual to find which USB port is a high-speed USB 2.0 port. The USB Speed
Indicator LED will light red if the port is the slow USB 1.1 and green if the port is the faster USB 2.0.
D. My Ultra TravelDrive will not let me transfer files from my Mac to a PC or from my PC to a Mac.
The Mac uses both a FAT (File Allocation Table) file system and the Mac OS Standard format in operating systems
from OS 8.6 to 9.21, and this file system is compatible with PCs. Mac OS 9.22 to X (10.x) use a different HFS
format that may cause re-indexing of FAT and FAT 32 formatted drives. For those systems you may have to
format your Ultra TravelDrive for Mac use only with the HFS or HFS+ formats.

E. I don’t get a drive letter or an icon in My Computer for the drive even though it’s plugged in. How can I fix this?If you have other drives installed on the system, Windows may try to install the Ultra TravelDrive with an existing
drive letter. This issue can happen in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. To correct this, follow these steps (You
must have administrative level access.):
a. Go to Control Panel.
b. Click on Administrative Tools.
c. Click on Computer Management.
d. Click on Disk Management.
e. In the drive listings, you will see the Ultra TravelDrive with its rated capacity. Right click on it.
f. Click on Change Drive Letter and Paths.
g. Click Change.
h. Click on the down arrow and select an available drive letter (We suggest “T” for TravelDrive.).
i. Press OK twice.
j. Close Computer Management and Control Panel.
You should now be able to see the drive correctly in Windows Explorer or My Computer.
F. My Ultra TravelDrive does not work in an external USB hub.
If the drive works in USB ports on the computer, the problem may be that the hub does not supply enough
voltage for the Ultra TravelDrive. This is not uncommon for inexpensive USB hubs. Use the auxiliary USB power
cable in addition to the USB data cable to increase power to your Ultra TravelDrive.
10. FAQs (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)
ENGLISH
A. When do I have to replace the battery?
Never. The Ultra TravelDrive draws its power from the USB port. It has no batteries and requires no external
power supply to function.
B. Do I have to protect the Ultra TravelDrive from airport X-rays or magnetic fields?
The level of X-ray power in an airport scanner is not sufficient to affect the Ultra TravelDrive. However, since the
Ultra TravelDrive is a hard drive, it should be kept away from powerful magnetic fields that can erase portions
of the drive. It is always a wise policy to keep a backup of your files before traveling, and leaving the Ultra
TravelDrive home while traveling with a laptop makes the most sense.
C. Why does my “80GB” Ultra TravelDrive only show up as having 74.5GB on my computer?
The difference has to do with the way a computer counts and the way people count. People use the decimal
system in which a “gigabyte” equals one million bytes. Computers use the binary system in which a “gigabyte”
equals 1,048,576 bytes because all binary numbers must be calculated to the base 2. Capacities of drives and
recordable media traditionally use the decimal method of calculation.
D. I don’t have USB 2.0. Can I still use the USB Ultra TravelDrive with my USB 1.1 connections?
Yes. The Ultra TravelDrive is backwards compatible with USB 1.1, but data transfers will be very slow at USB 1.1
speeds. The USB speed indicator LED will light up red if the USB port is truly a USB 1.1 port.
E. Can I use a USB 1.1 extension cable with the Ultra TravelDrive?
Yes. USB 1.1 and 2.0 extension cables will function the same way.
F. Can I fill the Ultra TravelDrive to its maximum capacity?
Yes, but it is not advisable due to the nature of the file structures of re-writable technology used on your Ultra
TravelDrive and other media such as flash cards and CD-RWs. These media become unreliable when filled to
capacity. It is strongly recommended that a small amount of safety margin be reserved to protect access to your
files.
G. I accidentally took out the Ultra TravelDrive while the activity light was flashing. Now it doesn’t work. Can it be
repaired?
Your Ultra TravelDrive should still function normally; however, there is a strong possibility that the file or files that
you were transferring may have become corrupted. If that is the case, recovery software may be able to retrieve
some critical files. In order to get your Ultra TravelDrive working again, you may have to reformat the drive.
Page | 24
IMPORTANT NOTE: Reformatting permanently erases all the data on the Ultra TravelDrive, and you will lose any unsaved files permanently. See “REFORMATTING” above.
H. I’ve used my Ultra TravelDrive for a long time, but it’s not working as fast as before. Why is it slowing down?
The Ultra TravelDrive, like any hard drive, can have its files fragmented over time as files have been added and
deleted a great many times. You should check to see if your Ultra TravelDrive needs to be defragmented if it
begins to operate slowly. The same software you use to degragment your regular hard drives can be used to
defragment the Ultra TravelDrive.
