Important Safety Notice and Instructions

The California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65) requires the Governor of California to publish a list of substances known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm, and requires businesses to warn cus tomers of potential exposures to such substances.
Users of this appliance are hereby warned that the burn ing of gas can result in low-level exposure to some of the listed substances, including benzene, formaldehyde and soot, due primarily to the incomplete combustion of natural gas or liquid petroleum (LP) fuels. Exhaust ducts should be kept free of obstructions and properly exhausted dryers will minimize exposure.
A UMRJIfliVG — For your safety the Information in this manual must be followed to minimize the risk of fire or
explosion or to prevent property dam
age, personal injury or death.
- Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any other appliance.
- WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS
• Do not try to light any appliance.
• Do not touch any electrical switch.
Do not use any phone in your
building.
• Clear the room, building or area of
all occupants.
Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions.
• If you cannot reach your gas suppli er, call the fire department.
Installation and service must be per formed by a qualified installer, service agency or the gas supplier. ^
Appliances with the (|) symbol on the data plate have been listed with Underwriters’ Eaboratories, Inc. Those with a CSA Monogram on the data plate have been cer tified by the CSA Testing Eaboratories as complying with Canadian Standards Association requirements. Gas dryers with an AGA symbol on the data plate have been design certified with the American Gas Association; those with a CGA symbol on the data plate have been approved by the Canadian Gas Association. Nevertheless, as with any equipment using electricity and having moving parts, there are potential hazards. To use this appliance safely, the operator should become familiar with the instructions for operation of the appli ance and always exercise care when using it.
A WARNING — Do not place into your dryer items that have been spotted or soaked with vegetable oil or cooking oil. Even after being washed, these items may contain significant amounts of these oils. The remaining oil can ignite spontaneously. The potential for spontaneous ignition increases when the items containing veg etable oil or cooking oil are exposed to heat. Heat sources, such as your clothes dryer, can warm these items, allowing an oxidation reaction in the oil to occur. Oxidation creates heat. If this heat cannot escape, the items can become hot enough to catch fire. Piling, stacking or storing these kinds of items may prevent heat from escaping and can create a fire hazard.
All washed and unwashed fabrics that con tain vegetable oil or cooking oil can be dan gerous. Washing these items in hot water with extra detergent will reduce, but will not eliminate, the hazard. Always use the "cool down" cycle for these items to reduce the items' temperature. Never remove these items from the clothes dryer while hot or interrupt the drying cycle until the items have run through the "cool do wn '■ cycl e. Never pi I e or stack th ese items when they are hot. ^ ^

Important Safety Instructions

^WARNING — To reduce the risk of fire, explosion, electric shock, property damage or injury
to persons when using your appliance, follow basic precautions, including the following;
1. Read all instructions before using the appliance.
2. To avoid the possibility of fire or explosion: a. Do not wash or dry items that have been previously
cleaned in, washed in, soaked in, or spotted with gaso line, dry-cleaning solvents, other flammable or explo sive substances as they give off vapors that could ignite or explode. Hand wash and line dry any items contain ing these substances.
Any material on which you have used a cleaning sol vent, or which is saturated with flammable liquids or solids, should not be placed in the appliance until all traces of these liquids or solids and their fumes have been removed.
These items include acetone, denatured alcohol, gaso line, kerosene, some liquid household cleaners, some spot removers, turpentine, waxes and wax removers.
b. Do not add gasoline, dry-cleaning solvents, or other
flammable or explosive substances to the wash water. These substances give off vapors that could ignite or explode.
c. Under certain conditions, hydrogen gas may be pro
duced in a hot water system that has not been used for 2 weeks or more. HYDROGEN GAS IS EXPLO SIVE. If the hot water system has not been used for such a period, before using a washing machine or combination washer-dryer, turn on all hot water faucets and let the water flow from each for several minutes. This will release any accumulated hydrogen gas. As the gas is flammable, do not smoke or use an open flame during this time.
d. Items containing foam rubber (may be labeled latex
foam) or similarly textured rubber-like materials must not be dried on a heat setting. Foam rubber materials when heated, can under certain circumstances produce fire by spontaneous combustion,
e. Do not place items exposed to cooking oils in your
dryer. Items contaminated with cooking oils may con tribute to a chemical reaction that could cause a load to catch fire.
3. Do not allow children to play on or in the appliance. Close super\’ision of children is necessary when the appliance is used near children.
4. Before the appliance is removed from seiv-ice or discard ed, remove the door to the clothes washer and clothes dryer compartment.
5. Do not reach into the appliance if the tub or drum is mov ing,
6. Do not install or store this appliance where it will be exposed to the weather.
7. Do not tamper with controls.
8. Do not repair or replace any part of tire appliance or attempt any serrfcing unless specifically recommended in published user-repair instructions that you understand and have the skills to carry out.
9. Do not use fabric softeners or products to eliminate stat ic unless recommended by the manufacturer of the fabric softener or product.
10. Clean the dryer lint screen before or after each load.
11. Keep the area around the exhaust opening and surround ing areas free from lint accumulation, dust and dirt.
12. The interior of the dryer and exhaust duct should be cleaned yearly by qualified sendee personnel.
13. This appliance must be properly grounded. Never plug the appliance cord into a receptacle which is not ground ed adequately and in accordance with local and national codes. See Installation Instructions for grounding this appliance.
14. Unplug power supply cord before attempting to service your appliance.
15. Store laundry aids and other material in a cool, dry place where children cannot reach them.
16. Do not use chlorine bleach and ammonia or acids (such as vinegar or rust remover) in the same wash. Hazardous fumes can form.
17. Do not machine wash fiberglass materials. Small parti cles can stick to fabrics washed in following loads and cause skin irritation.
18. Install and level washer on a floor that can support the weight.
19. As with any equipment using electricity and havring mov ing parts, there are potential hazards. To use this appli ance safely, the operator should become familiar with the instructions for operation of the appliance and always exercise care when using it.

Step J Load the Clothes Washer

The tub can be loaded completely full with dry unfolded clothes. However, do not pack the tub tightly.
Overloading may reduce washing efficiency and pos sibly cause creasing or wrinkling of the load.
When washing big bulky items, such as a rug, that do not till the tub completely, a few towels may be added for best performance.
To load a forgotten item immediately after the clothes washer has started, press the START/STOP
button. The door will remain unlocked for approxi mately 3 minutes into the start of the cycle. Add the
item(s), close the door and press the START/STOP
button to resume the cycle.
Once the door has locked, it is possible to load a forgotten item. Press the START/STOP button and

Washer Features

Detergent

Your Maytag Neptune'“ stacked washer is designed to use a high efficiency laundry detergent or lanndry deter gent normally used with top loading washers,
• For best cleaning results, use a high efficiency deter gent specially formulated for front load washers such as Tide FIE or Wisk HE*. To identify this type of detergent, look for the High Efficiency symbol shown to the right.
• If you are unable to locate the High Efficiency laun dry detergent products in your area, you will achieve successful cleaning results with laundry detergent normally used in top loading washers.

Adding Detergent

Either liquid or granular detergent may be used to wash clothes. Follow the directions on the box or bottle to determine the appropriate amount of detergent. Ponr the detergent directly on top of the load in the tub.
If color-safe bleach is to be used, it should be added on
top of the load with detergent for best results.
Jf using the “PRE WASH” setting, measure
1 1/2 times the amount of detergent.

Automatic Dispensers

There are two automatic dispensing compartments. One holds liquid chlorine bleach and the other holds liquid fabric softener. The laundry additives can be added to their respective dispenser compartments. They will be dispensed at the appropriate time for the most effective cleaning and softening.

Adding Chlorine Bleach

The dispenser automatically dilutes liquid chlorine bleach before it reaches the wash load. Follow these steps when using liquid chlorine bleach;
1. Add liquid chlorine bleach to the chlorine bleach
compartment but do not exceed the MAX FILL 3/4 CUP line. The chlorine bleach compartment will hold 3/4 of a cup.
2. Avoid splashing or over-filling the compartment.
Over-filling the compartment will release the chlo rine bleach into the clothes washer too early.
NOTE:
• Never pour undiluted liquid chlorine bleach directly onto the load or into the tub. It is a powerful chemi cal and can cause fabric damage, such as weakening of the fibers or color loss, if not used properly.
• If you prefer to use color-safe, non-chlorine bleach, add it with the detergent. Do not pour color-safe
bleach into the liquid chlorine bleach compart ment.

Adding Fabric Softener

This compartment automatically dilutes and releases liq uid fabric softener at the proper time during the cycle. Follow these steps when using liquid fabric softener:
1. Pour liquid fabric softener into the fabric softener compartment using the amount recommended on the package.
2. Fabric softener may be diluted with warm water until
it reaches the MAX FILL DILUTED line on the compartment. Do not fill the liquid fabric softener
compartment above the MAX FILL DILUTED line. If the compartment is filled above the MAX FILL DILUTED line, it will enter the clothes washer too early.
NOTE:
• Never pour fabric softener directly on the load. It may leave spots and stains.
• Use the fabric softener compartment only for liquid fabric softeners.
Using the Downy Ball* is not recommended with this washer. It will be ineffe
washer. It will be ineffective in reducing static cling and providing softness.

Removing the Chlorine Bleach Grate

The gray siphon cap for chlorine bleach has a grate cov ering the dispensing compartment. This grate helps pre vent items from falling into the bleach dispenser by accident. The grate is detachable for easy clean-up.
When the chlorine bleach compartment is empty, lift the gray siphon cap out of the chlorine bleach compartment. Run water over the entire siphon cap and grate to wash off any excess chlorine bleach. Took at the backside of the siphon cap. Using your thumb, press the bottom notch up and outward (Illustration #1). The grate should come out of the hole (Illustration #2). Take the pieces to the sink for cleaning.

“Whirring” sound followed by a
pause, repeated throughout the wash
cycle.
Clothes washer maintains a slightly reduced spin speed after achieving a higher spin speed.
This occurs as the motor increases speed to spin the tub to remove moisture from the load.
Water enters the dispensers to flush chlorine bleach and/or fabric softener into the tumbler during the appropriate time of the cycle.
This sound comes from the sealed counter balance ring. It is used to make the washer run more smoothly and efficiently.
The tub rotates one direction followed by a pause. The tub reverses direction and pauses.
After reaching the maximum spin speed, the machine may reduce spin speed slightly to create less noise and vibration.
The spin speed slows down dramati cally when it sounds like an out-of
balance load.
Clothes washer adds water after it has
been tumbling for a while.
If you are unsure about an operating sound, the Video User's Guide may provide further assistance. The normal operating sounds listed on this paye can be heard on the video.
The tumbler will begin to accelerate up to speed, then slows back down to redistribute the load more evenly.
The Maytag Neptune“ clothes washer uses a true adaptive fill. This will add more water during the wash cycle as it is needed.
OR
Water IS being added to the dispensers to dilute and rinse chlo rine bleach or fabnc softener into the tumbler at the appropriate time. This will occur even if chlorine bleach and fabric softener are not used.
