Hydrogen gas is extremely flammable and explosive.
To prevent the possibility of injury under these con- ditions, we recommend the hot water faucet be
opened for several minutes at the kitchen sink before any electrical appliances which are connected
to the hot water system are used (such as a dish- washer or washing machine). If hydrogen gas is pre-
sent, there will probably be an unusual sound stmi- lar to air escaping through the pipe as the hot water
faucet is opened. There must be no smoking or open flame near the faucet at the time it is open.

AWARNING
Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the water temperature in certain situations may be
hotter than the thermostat setting.
Short, frequent draws of hot water - especially with
very cold incoming water - can shock the thermo- stat into brief operation resulting in hotter and hot-
ter layers of water closer to the top of the tank. Changes in hot water usage patterns or raising the temperature differential between the cut-on of the thermostat and the cold water temperature will usually eliminate the problem.
