A WARNING
Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service
or maintenance can cause DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY
INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE. Refer to this manu
al for assistance consult your local utility or call
Maytag Customer Service at 1-800-788-8899 for an

AWARNING
HAZARD OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK! Before removing
any access panels or servicing the water heater,
make sure the electrical supply to the water heater
is turned "OFF". Failure to do this could result in
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY
DAMAGE.
AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are
intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a
temperature which will satisfy clothes washing,
dish washing, and other sanitizing needs can scald
and permanently injure you upon contact. Some
people are more likely to be permanently injured by
hot water than others. These include the elderly,
children, the infirm, or physically/mentally handi
capped. If anyone using hot water in your home fits
into one of these groups or if there is a local code or
state law requiring a certain temperature water at
the hot water tap_, then you must take special pre
cautions. In addition to using the lowest possible
temperature setting that satisfies your hot water
needs, a means sucn as a mixing valve, should be
used at the hot water taps used by these people or
at the water heater. Mixing valves are available at
plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow manu
facturers instructions for installation of the valves.
Before changing the factory setting on the thermo
stat, read the "Temperature Regulation" section in
this manual.
AWARNING
INSULATING JACKETS: When installing an external
water heater insulation jacket on an electric water
heater:
• DO NOT cover the temperature-pressure relief valve.
• DO NOT put insulation over the access covers or
any access areas.
• DO NOT cover or remove operating instructions,
and safety related warning labels and materials
affixed to the water heater.
AWARNING
Do not use this appliance if any part of it has been
under water. An electrical short or malfunction could
occur. The water heater should be replaced.
AWARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was pro
vided with a combination temperature-pressures relief
valve certified by a nationally recognized testing labo
ratory that maintains periodic inspection of production
of listed equipment or materials, as meeting the
requirements for Relief Valves and Automatic Gas
Shutoff Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems, and
the latest edition of ANSI Z21.22 and the code require
ments of ASME. If replaced, the valve must meet the
requirements of local codes, but not less than a combi
nation temperature and pressure relief valve certified
as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot Water Supply
Systems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recognized test
ing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection of
production oflisted equipment or materials.
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pres
sure not to exceed the marked hydrostatic working
pressure of the water heater (150 Ibs./sq. in.) and a
discharge capacity not less than the water heater
input rate as shown on the model rating plate.
(Electric heaters - watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal
BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the
use of a temperature-pressure relief valve complying
with ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve model
different from the one furnished with the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be sat
isfied by the installer or end user of the water heater
with a locally prescribed temperature-pressure relief
valve installed in the designated opening in the water
heater in place of the factory furnished valve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve
must not be removed from it's designated opening or
plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be
installed directly into the fitting of the water heater
designated for the relief valve. Position the valve
downward and provide tubing so that any discharge
will exit only within 6 inches above, or at any distance
below the structural floor. Be certain that no contact is
made with any live electrical part. The discharge open
ing must not be blocked or reduced in size under any
circumstances. Excessive length, over 30 feet, or use of
more than four elbows can cause restriction and
reduce the discharge capacity of the valve.
No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between
the relief valve and the tank. Do not connect tubing
directly to discharge drain unless a 6" air gap is provid
ed. To prevent bodily injury, hazard to life, or property
damage, the relief valve must be allowed to discharge
water in quantities should circumstances demand. If
the discharge pipe is not connected to a drain or other
suitable means, the water flow may cause property
damage.
The Discharge Pipe:
• Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size
of the valve, or have any reducing couplings or
other restrictions.
• Must not be plugged or blocked.
• Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
• Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage
of both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and
the discharge pipe.
• Must terminate at an adequate drain.
• Must not have any valve between the relief valve
and tank.

AWARNING
WATER HEATERS EQUIPPED FOR ONE VOLTAGE
ONLY: This water heater is equipped for one type
voltage only. Check the rating plate near the bot
tom access panel for the correct voltage. DO NOT
use this water heater with any voltage other than
the one shown on the model rating plate. Failure to
use the correct voltage can cause problems which
can result in DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY. OR
PROPERTY DAMAGE. If you have any questions or
doubts consult your electric company.
A CAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of
the water heater must be accomplished in such a
manner that if the tank or any connections should
leak, the flow of water will not cause damage to the
structure. For this reason, it is not advisable to install
the water heater in an attic or upper floor. When
such locations cannot be avoided, a suitable drain
pan should be installed under the water heater.
Drain pans are available at your local hardware
store. Such a drain pan must have a minimum diam
eter of at ieast 1% inches greater than the water
heater diameter and must be piped to an adequate
drain. Under no circumstances is the manufacturer or
Maytag to be held liable for any water damage in
connection with this water heater.

valve and put the other end in a floor
drain or outdoors. Open the water
heater drain valve. Open a nearby hot
water faucet which will relieve pressure
in the water heater and speed draining.
a. If you have copper piping to the water heater, the two
copper water pipes can be cut vrith a hacksaw approxi
mately four inches away from where they connect to
the water heater. This will avoid cutting off the pipes
too short. Additional cuts can be made later if neces
sary, Disconnect the temperature-pressure relief valve
drain line. When the water heater is drained, discon
nect the hose from the drain valve. Close the drain
valve. The water heater is now conapletely disconnect
ed and ready to be removed.
b. If you have galvanized pipe to the water
heater, loosen the two galvanized pipes
with a pipe wrench at the union in each
line. Also disconnect the piping remain
ing to the water heater. These pieces
should be saved since they may be needed
when reconnecting the new water heater.
Disconnect the temperature-pressure
relief valve discharge pipe. When the
water heater is drained, disconnect the
hose from the drain valve. Close the drain
valve. The water heater is now completely
disconnected and ready to be removed.
A WARNING
The water passing out of the drain
valve may be extremely hot. To
avoid being scalded, make sure all
connections are tight and that the
water flow is directed away from
any person.
Check again to make sure the electrical supply is turned
“OFF” to the water heater. Then disconnect the electri
cal supply connection from the water heater junction
box.
A CAUTION
Mineral buildup or sediment may have accumulated
in the old water heater. This causes the water
heater to be much heavier than normal and this
residue, if spilled out, could cause staining.

Locating The New Water
Heater
You should carefully choose an indoor location for the new
water heater, because the placement is a very important con
sideration for the safety of the occupants in the building and
for the most economical use of the appliance. This water
heater is not intended for outdoor installation.
Whether replacing an old water heater or putting the water
heater in a new location, the following critical points must be
observed.
1. The location selected should be indoors as close to and as
centralized with the water piping system as possible. This
water heater, as well as all water heaters, will eventually
leak. Do not install without adequate drainage provisions
where water flow will cause damage.
A CAUTION
WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of the
water heater must be accomplished in such a manner
that if the tank or any connections should leak, the flow
of water will not cause damage to the structure. For this
reason, it is not advisable to install the water heater in
an attic or upper floor. When such locations cannot be
avoided, a suitable drain pan shouid be installed under
the water heater. Drain pans are available at your local
hardware store. Such a drain pan must have a minimum
diameter of at least VA inches greater than the water
heater diameter and must be piped to an adequate
drain. Under no circumstances is the manufacturer or
Maytag to be held liable for any water damage in con
nection with this water heater.
A CAUTION
INSTALLATION IN RESIDENTIAL GARAGES: The water
heater must be located and/or protected so it is not
subject to physical damage by a moving vehicle.
2. The location selection must provide adequate clearances for
servicing and proper operation of the water heater.
Typical Installation
CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS FOR LEAKS.

Temperature-Pressure Relief Valve
AWARNING
At the time of manufacture this water heater was provid
ed with a combination temperature-pressures relief valve
certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory that
maintains periodic inspection of production of listed
equipment or materials, as meeting the requirements for
Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot
Water Supply Systems, and the latest edition of ANSI
Z21.22 and the code requirements of ASME. If replaced,
the valve must meet the requirements of local codes, but
not (ess than a combination temperature and pressure
relief valve certified as meeting the requirements for
Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot
Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally recog
nized testing laboratory that maintains periodic inspection
of production of listed equipment or materials.
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure
not to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure of
the water heater (150 lbs./sq. in.) and a discharge capacity
not less than the water heater input rate as shown on the
model rating plate. (Electric heaters - watts divided by
1000 X 3415 equal BTU/Hr. rate.)
Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the
use of a temperature-pressure relief valve complying with
ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve model differ
ent from the one furnished with the water heater.
Compliance with such local requirements must be satisfied
by the installer or end user of the water heater with a
locally prescribed temperature-pressure relief valve
installed in the designated opening in the water heater in
place of the factory furnishea valve.
For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve
must not be removed from it's designated opening or
plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installed
directly into the fitting of the water heater designated for
the relief valve. Position the valve downward and provide
tubing so that any discharge will exit only within 6 inches
above, or at any distance below the structural floor. Be
certain that no contact is made with any live electrical
part. The discharge opening must not be blocked or
reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive length,
over 30 feet, or use of more than four elbows can cause
restriction and reduce the discharge capacity of the valve.
No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between the
relief valve and the tank. Do not connect tubing directly to
discharge drain unless a 6" air gap is provided. To prevent
bodily injury, hazard to life, or property damage, the relief
valve must be allowed to discharge water in quantities
should circumstances demand. If the discharge pipe is not
connected to a drain or other suitable means, the water
flow may cause property damage.
The Discharge Pipe;
• Must not oe smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of
the valve, or have any reducing couplings or other
restrictions.
• Must not be plugged or blocked.
• Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.
• Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of
both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the dis
charge pipe.
• Must terminate at an adequate drain.
• Must not have any valve between the relief valve and
tank.
AWARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manu
ally operated at least once a year. Caution should be
taken to ensure that (1) no one is in front of or
around the outlet of the temperature-pressure relief
valve discharge line, and (2) the water manually dis
charged will not cause any bodily injury or property
damage because the water may be extremely hot.
If after manually operating the valve, it fails to com
pletely reset and continues to release water, immedi
ately close the cold water inlet to the water heater,
follow the draining instructions, and replace the
temperature-pressure relief valve with a new one.

Filling the Water Heater
To fill the water heater with water;
1. Close the water heater drain valve by turning the handle to
the right (clockwise). The drain valve is on the lower front
of the water heater,
2. Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater.
NOTE: The cold water supply valve must be left open
when the water heater is in use.
3. To insure complete filling of the tank, allow air to exit by
opening the nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run
until a constant flow is obtained. This will let air out of the
water heater and the piping.
A CAUTION
Never use this water heater unless it is completely
full of water. To prevent damage to the tank and
heating element, the tank must be filled with
water. Water must flow from the hot water faucet
before turning "ON" power.
4. Check all new water piping for leaks. Repair as needed.

Temperature Regulation
AWARNING
HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are
intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a
temperature which will satisfy clothes washing,
dish washing, and other sanitizing needs can scald
and permanently injure you upon contact. Some
eople are more likely to be permanently injured by
ot water than others. These include the elderly,
R
children, the infirm, or physically/mentally handi
capped. If anyone using hot water in your home fits
into one of these groups or if there is a local code or
state law requiring a certain temperature water at
the hot water tap, then you must take special pre
cautions. In addition to using the lowest possible
temperature setting that satisfies your hot water
needs, a means such as a mixing valve, should be
used at the hot water taps used by these people or
at the water heater. Mixing valves are available at
plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow manu
facturers instructions for installation of the valves.
Before changing the factory setting on the thermo
stat, read the 'Temperature Regulation" section in
this manual.

Troubleshooting
Start Up Conditions
THERMAL EXPANSION
Water supply systems may, because of such events as high line
pressure, frequent cut-offs, the effects of water hammer
among others, have installed devices such as pressure reducing
valves, check valves, back flow preventers, etc...to control
these types of problems. When these devices are not equipped
with an internal by-pass, and no other measures are taken, the
devices cause the water system to be closed. As water is heat
ed, it expands (thermal expansion) and closed systems do not
allow for the expansion of heated water.
The water within the water heater tank expands as it is heated
and increases the pressure of the water system. If the relieving
point of the water heater's temperature-pressure relief valve is
reached, the valve will relieve the excess pressure. The temper
ature-pressure relief valve is not intended for the constant
relief of thermal expansion. This is an unacceptable condition
and must be corrected.
It is recommended that any devices installed which could create
a closed system, have a by-pass and/or the system have an
expansion tank to relieve the pressure built by thermal expan
sion in the water system. Expansion tanks are available for
ordering through the Maytag Customer Service. Contact the
local water supplier and/or call Maytag Customer Service at
1-800-788-8899 for an authorized servicer for assistance in
controlling these situations.
STRANGE SOUNDS
Smelly water may be eliminated or reduced in some water heater
models by replacing the anode(s) with one of less active material,
and then chlorinating the water heater tank and aU hot water
hnes. Call Maytag Customer Service at 1-800-788-8899 for an
authorized servicer for further information concerning an Anode
Replacement Kit #66001068 and this Chlorination Treatment.
If the smelly water persists after the anode replacement and chlo
rination treatment, we can only suggest that continuous chlorina
tion and filtering conditioning equipment be considered to elimi
nate the water problem.
Do not remove the anode leaving the tank unprotected. By
doing so, all warranty on the water heater tank is voided.
"AW" IN HOT WATER FAUCETS
AWARNING
HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gas can be produced in
a hot water wstem that has not been used for a
long period of time (generally two weeks or more).
Hydrogen gas is extremely flammable and explo
sive. To prevent the possibility of injury under these
conditions, we recommend the hot water faucet be
opened for several minutes at the kitchen sink
before any electrical appliances which are connect
ed to the not water system are used (such as a dish
washer or washing machine). If hydrogen gas is pre
sent, there will probably be an unusual sound simi
lar to air escaping through the pipe as the hot
water faucet is opened. There must be no smoking
or open flame near the faucet at the time it is open.
Possible noises due to expansion and contraction of some
metal parts during periods of heat-up and cool-down do not
represent harmful or dangerous conditions.
Operational Conditions
SMELLY WATER
In each glasslined water heater there is installed at least one anode
rod (see parts section) for corrosion protection of the tank.
Certain water conditions vdll cause a reaction between this rod
and the water. The most common complaint associated with the
anode rod is one of a “rotten egg smell”. This odor is derived from
hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water. The smell is the result
of four factors which must all be present for the odor to develop:
a. a concentration of sulfate in the supply water.
b. little or no dissolved oxygen in the water.
c. a sulfate reducing bacteria within the water heater. (This
harmless bacteria is non-toxic to humans.)
d. an excess of active hydrogen in the tank. This is caused by
the corrosion protective action of the anode.
RUMBLING NOISE
In some water areas, scale or mineral deposits will build up on
your heating elements. This buildup will cause a rumbling
noise. Follow “Element Cleaning/Replacement” instructions
to clean and replace the elements.
HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF SYSTEM
The water heater has a high limit shut off system with a reset
button located on the thermostat.
Follow the resetting instructions which refer to the high limit
behind the access panel.
NOTE: Ifyour water heater is connected to an “OFF
PEAK* clock, and uses the “3 wire lead” wiring diagram in
the “Wiring Diagram” section, then the water heater wUl
have a hi-Hmit on both the upper and lower thermostats.
FoUow the instructions to reset the hi-Hmit behind the
upper and lower access panels.
25
Page 26
Troubleshooting (cont'd)
1. Before beginning, turn “OFF” electrical power supply to
the water heater.
AWARNING
HAZARD OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK! Before removing
any access panels or servicing the water heater,

is turned "OFF". Failure to do this could result in
DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY, OR PROPERTY
DAMAGE.
2. Remove the two screws securing the access panel and
remove panel.
3. Remove the insulation block to expose the opening.
NOT ENOUGH OR NO HOT WATER
1. In a new installation, the water heater may not be proper
ly connected. Make sure the cold water supply valve is
open. Review and check piping installation. Make sure
that the cold water line is connected to the cold water
inlet to the water heater and the hot water line to the hot
water outlet on the water heater,
2. Make sure the electrical supply to your water heater is
“ON”.
3. Check for loose or blown fuses in your water heater cir
cuit. Circuit breakers weaken with age and may not han
dle their rated load and should be replaced.
4. Make certain the disconnect switch, if used, is in the
“ON” position,
5. Check to see the electric service to your house has not
been interrupted. If this is the case, contact the electric
company,
6. Are the thermostats set to the desired temperature? See
“Temperature Regulation” section.
4. Reset the high limit by pushing in the red button marked
“RESET”.
RESET BUTTON
5. Replace the insulation block so that it completely covers
the thermostat and element.
6. Replace the access panel.
7. Turn “ON” electric power to the water heater.
A CAUTION
If the high limit must be reset again, call Maytag
Customer Service at 1-800-788-8899 for an autho
rized servicer to find out why the high limit turned
"OFF" the electric power.
7. If you had experienced very hot water and now no hot
water, the problem may be due to the high temperature
shut off system. See “High Temperature Shut Off
System” in the “Troubleshooting” section.
8. During very cold weather, the incoming water will also be
colder and it wiU require a longer time to become heated,

Leakage Checkpoints
Use this guide to check a “Leaking” water heater. Many sus
pected “Leakers” are not leaking tanks. Often the source of
the water can be found and corrected.
If you are not thoroughly familiar with electric codes, the
water heater, and safety practices, contact your local utility or
call Maytag Customer Service at 1-800-788-8899 for an
authorized servicer to check the water heater.
(A) ‘Condensation may be seen on pipes in humid weather
^ ^ or pipe connections may be leaking.
(5) *The primary anode rod may be leaking.
Small amounts of water ftom temperature-pressure
relief valve may be due to thermal expansion or high
water pressure in your area.
*The temperature-pressure relief valve may be leaking
at the tank fitting.
The elements may be leaking at the tank fitting.
A WARNING
HAZARD OF ELECTRICAL SHOCKI Before
removing any access panels or servicing the
water heater, make sure the electrical supply
to the water heater is turned "OFF". Failure to
do this could result in DEATH, SERIOUS BODI
LY INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.
A CAUTION
Read this manual first, then before checking the
water heater make sure the electric supply hasoeen
turned "OFF", and never turn the electric supply
"ON" before the tank is completely full of water.
A CAUTION
Never use this water heater unless it is completely
full of water. To prevent damage to the tank and
heating element, the tank must be filled with water.
The water must flow from the hot water faucet
before turning "ON" power.
Turn electrical power “OFF”, remove access panels
and fold back insulation. If leaking around elements,
follow proper draining instructions and remove ele
ment. Reposition or replace gasket on element. Place
element into opening and tighten securely. Then fol
low “Filling the Water Heater” instructions in the
“Installation Instructions” section.
Water from drain valve may be due to the valve being
opened slightly.
‘The drain valve may be leaking at the tank fitting,
‘Water in the water heater bottom or on the floor may
be from condensation, loose connections or the
temperature-pressure relief valve. DO NOT replace
the water heater until a filli inspection of all possible
water sources is made and necessary corrective steps
taken.
Leakage from other appliances, water lines, or ground
seepage should also be checked.
‘NOTE: To check where threaded portion enters
tank, insert cotton swab between jacket opening
and fitting. If cotton is wet, follow “Draining”
instructions in the “Service and Maintenance” sec
tion and then remove fitting. Put pipe dme or
teflon tape on the threads and replace. Then follow
“Filling the Water Heater” instructions in the
“Instructions for Installation” section.
