There are two Windows G UI applications inc luded with MAXREFDES24EVSYS that can be executed direc tly
from the USB flash drive after USB connections have been established with the boards and Windows
completes driver installation. See the Graphical User Interfaces
•4-Channel Analog Output GUI utilizes the U SB2PMB1 adapter for exercising the di gital interface of
the MAXREFDES24 desig n. This includes the SP I port of the MAX5134 4-chan nel DAC and multiple
MAX15500 output conditioners. This GUI application utilizes the .NET 4.0 platform and does not
require installation of any Maxim Integrated software.
•MAXADCLite2 GUI for capturing analog test signals with the MAXADCLITE2 board in order to
evaluate the performance of the AO reference design. This application does not require installation.

3 Hardware Connections
This section describes the basic connections with the MAXREFDES24EVSYS kit.
•The user must pr ovide a Windows PC with two available USB ports and an AC outlet for operating the
MAXREFDES24EVSYS kit. In addition to providing PC communications, the USB ports power the
USB2PMB1 and MAXADCLITE2 boards.
•A universal AC wall adapter and test clip adapter are includ ed for providing 24V DC to the MAXREFDES24
analog output board. A ny DC supply with 20–30V DC and >150mA output capabilit ies can be substitute d
for the AC wall adapter.
•The MAXREF DES24 and USB2PMB1 boards m ate together via a 12-pin Pmod Type 2A connector. For
more information on the Pmod form factor, refer to the Digilent Pmod
www.DigilentInc.com.
•A pair of wires with test clips is provided for establishing an analog control signal between one of the
MAXREFDES24 outputs and one of the MAXADCLITE2 inputs.

4.1.2 MAX15500 Output Conditioners
Following USB connection, the MAX15500 Output Conditioners section will refresh to show the default
configuration and initial error states of the MAX1550 devices. Upon any power-up (or supply brownout
condition), the Supply Brownout alarm is expected. A red LED on the MAXR EFDES24 hard ware will also be
on. A subsequent Refresh of the MAX15500 Output Conditioners section will clear the alarm.
One can set the Brownout threshold in 2V inc rements from ±10V to ±24V. In the MAXREFDES24 desig n, a
brownout threshold of ±24V triggers a Supply Brownout alarm.
The default mode upon power up for the analog outputs is Standby with a ±10V brownout threshold and
thermal protection disabled. Use the Configuration sections to configure the on-board MAX15500 signal
conditioners to output com mon industrial control signal ranges (current or volta ge) and to read back any error
conditions the MAX15500 report.

MAXREFDES24EVSYS User Manual
Common error states and their meanin g are summ arized below . Refer to the MAX15500 IC data sheet for f ull
details on the error detection capabilities and register behavior.
When operating in voltage
modes, the Short Circuit error is
asserted if the respective output
is shorted to analog ground.
If the short circuit condition has
been resolved, a subsequent
Refresh asserts both the
Intermittent Fault and Short Circuit
errors. A second Refresh clears
the error unless the short circuit
condition has returned.
If the short circuit condition
remains, the error remains
asserted as shown above.
When operating in current
modes, the Open Load error is
asserted if there is an open
circuit in the current loop for the
respective output.
If the open load condition has
been resolved, a subsequent
Refresh asserts both the
Intermittent Fault and Open Load
errors. A second Refresh clears
the error unless the open load
condition has returned.
If the open load condition
remains, the error remains
asserted as shown above.
If the Intermittent Fault error is
ever asserted, one or more of the
other asserted error conditions
has cleared before the user read
the status register.
A subsequent Refresh clears the
intermittent errors and leaves any
persistent error alarms asserted.

The M AX5134 D AC c ontrol section allo ws users to send a s ingle DAC

levels are set in DA C codes (range of 0 to 65535) a nd are sent to all
four DAC outputs. See the table in the Analog Signal Connections
section for respective output signal levels.
Note that the USB overhead encountered in the USB2PMB1 board
(through use of FTDI chipset’s software device driver) will throttle
throughput from the PC to the MAX5134 quadgenerating waveform signals) to approximately 2.6K DAC sampling
points per second. Refer to
information on performance results for the DAC and MAXREFDES24
reference design using a Xilinx development kit.
