ENGINE
The Massey Ferguson 1600 series compact tractors use an Iseki liquid cooled, indirect injection diesel engine. These Tier IV Interim engines deliver optimum power while maintaining high efficiency levels and going beyond current emissions standards.
The 1635 utilizes a three cylinder engine, while the 1643, 1648, 1652, 1655 and 1660 use four cylinder engines. All the 1600 series engines are naturally aspirated.
The engine in the 1635 has a longer stroke then the previous model. The crankshaft has been induction hardened to increase output power while using the same size pin, reducing friction and increasing fuel efficiency. The larger water pump allows for more coolant to run through the cooling system.
The glow plug starting aid is standard equipment for use in cold weather. There is a field installed engine coolant heater available for extreme cold weather climates.

Three Range Hydrostatic Transmission
The hydrostatic transmission is offered in the 1635, 1643, 1648, and 1652 platform and cab models.
In order to change the non-synchronized ranges, the tractor must come to a complete stop, and using the inline range shift lever, located on the left console choose the correct range.
The side by side pedal forward and reverse pedals make it easy to change directions and give the operator more room on the platform. The brake pedals have been moved to the left hand side for convenience.
The hydrostatic transmission is excellent for applications that require frequent direction changes and speed variations. This transmission is easy to use for any operator.

8 x 8 SynchroShuttle Transmission
Available in the 1643, 1648, and 1655, this transmission provides an economical shuttle shift. The two non-synchronized ranges and four non-synchronized gears present eight forward and eight reverse speeds. Range and gear changes are made by fully depressing the clutch, bringing the tractor to a complete stop and selecting the proper range/gear combination. The gear and range shift levers are located on the left control console.
To change the direction of travel depress the clutch pedal and move the shuttle lever forward or backward. The shuttle is located on the left side of the steering column.
This transmission is great for applications where frequent changes in direction are required, such as loader work.

MASSEY FERGUSON
12 x 12 PowerShuttle Transmission
Available in the 1635, 1643, 1648, 1652 , 1655 and 1660. This transmission utilizes three non-synchronized ranges and four synchronized gears, pro-
viding twelve forward and twelve reverse speeds with the power shuttle. To shift between the three ranges the clutch must be fully depressed and the tractor completely stopped. Gear changes can be made on the go, by simply depressing the clutch pedal and choosing the desired gear. The shift levers are located on the left side control console, the range shift levers are inline and the gear shift lever is the traditional “H” pattern.
The forward/reverse shuttle lever is located on the left side of the steering column and is controlled by a hydraulic clutch pack, therefore, there is no need to use the foot clutch or stop to change directions. Just reduce the engine speed and move the shuttle lever to the desired direction of travel while using the brakes to slow the tractor. Shuttle modulation aids in makes the transition smooth because it allows the tractor to decrease speed before changing direction.

DynaQPS™ Transmission
Available only in the 1648, 1652 and 1660 cab models. The DynaQPSintegrates the durability of the gear transmission, the convenience of the hy-
draulic shift and the left hand powershuttle. The three non-synchronized ranges, four gears and forward/reverse powershuttle provide twelve forward and twelve reverse speeds. To change ranges the clutch must be completely depressed and the tractor must be stopped, the range selection lever is located on the left console. The four gears can be selected in each range using the + and - buttons on the shift lever without the use of the clutch. The powershuttle functions the same as on the 12x12 PowerShuttle transmission, with a hydraulic clutch pack, so there is no need to use the foot clutch when changing directions. The DynaQPS transmission is excellent for loader work and other applications in which it is necessary to change speeds and directions frequently. (Note: under heavy loads the tractor will hesitate when shifting through gears).

THREE POINT HITCH/PTO/DRAWBAR
All 1600 series tractors have an ASAE Category I three point hitch that facilitates the use of many implements. Telescopic lower link ends and telescopic stabilizers make attaching implements and adjusting the amount of lateral movement easy. Top link draft sensing is available as a field installed option for applications that require precise three point hitch control.
All of the 1600 series tractors come equipped with independent power take off (PTO). A separate hydraulic wet clutch is used to control the engagement of the PTO, making it possible to engage the PTO independently of the transmission. The independent PTO allows for quick and easy on the go engagement. The 540 rpm rear PTO is standard equipment. The 2000 rpm mid PTO is available as a field installed option on the 1635, 1643, 1648 and 1652.
The adjustable drawbar allows the operator adjust the length or remove the drawbar completely if necessary for certain applications.

Three Point Hitch Position Control
The position control, located in the right console will raise and lower the three point hitch. As the control is moved to the rear of the tractor the hitch will raise, when moved toward the front of the tractor it will lower.
Three Point Hitch Rate of Drop Control
Used to adjust the speed at which the hitch lowers, the rate of drop control is located on the kick panel just below the seat. The knob can be turned all the way to the lock position to keep the hitch up when transporting implements.
Telescopic Lower Link Ends
The telescopic lower link ends are standard equipment on all 1600 series tractors. The ends slide out by simply pushing down on the lever and pulling out the link end, making it easy to hook up three point mounted implements. To lock the links ends back in position, lower the implement to the ground and slowly back up the tractor until the ends lock in place.

Clutch
The clutch pedal is covered with a rubber pad with tread to prevent the operator’s foot from slipping off. There is a metal hook located behind the pedal for storing the tractor in cold weather conditions for extended periods. The clutch pedal can be depressed and locked into place to keep the clutch disc from freezing to the pressure plate and fly wheel.
Brakes
Like the clutch pedal, the two brake pedals are also covered with a rubber pad to prevent the operator’s foot from slipping. The operator can lock the brakes together with metal lever that is found between the two pedals, to increase stopping ability (the brake pedals should always be locked together when in transport). On hydrostatic models, the brake pedals are located on the left side of the steering column, so brakes can be used simultaneously with the hydrostatic pedals, improving turning radius.
Tilt Steering
The tilt steering is controlled by the foot lever located on the left side of the steering column. The steering wheel can be set to any of three positions when the lever is pushed in, and will be locked into place when it is released.
