Marshall Amplification 350 User Manual

ATTITUDE, STUNNING GOOD LOOKS and an incredible 350 Watts of brutal yet toneful power set the MODE FOUR apart from
all
other amps. Add to this an arsenal of great sounds, a slew of professional features plus groundbreaking, state-of-the-art hybrid technology and you have a Marshall like no other.
You Spoke, We Listened . . .
The first ever Marshall, the legendary JTM45, was born in 1962 as a result of the Guv’nor, Jim Marshall, listening to what guitar players wanted. Forty years later, the song remains the same and that’s how the MODE FOUR came to be. Modern guitarists told us they wanted an amp capable of more gain, more low-end and more headroom than ever before . . . plus great cleans and, of course, the crunch tones that have made Marshall a legend! We listened and reacted – the result is the MODE FOUR.
Dual Amplifier Design
Countless amplifiers have claimed to offer both classic and modern tones but, in truth, have fallen well short of the mark. The MODE FOUR boasts a true ‘Two Amplifiers in One’ design. AMP1 (Classic) takes you from shimmering clean to front-ended 2203 crunch, while AMP2 (Modern) takes you into modern, extreme gain territory. To make this possible, not only do AMP1 and AMP 2 have totally separate valve pre-amp circuits, the MODE FOUR’s power amplifier section completely reconfigures itself depending on the AMP selected.
AMP 1
Whenever AMP1 is selected, the power amp reconfigures to create the unmistakable sound and feel of our world renowned, 100 Watt Super Lead Plexi. Using this as a sonic foundation, AMP1 has the characteristic
Marshall openness and roar that have made amps like the Plexi, 2203 and Silver Jubilee 2555, timeless classics. While AMP1’ s CLEAN Mode produces incredibly dynamic, three dimensional clean and bluesy crunch sounds, its CRUNCH Mode unleashes the unbridled aggression and bite of the JCM800 2203, but with levels of gain never imagined in 1981, when this acclaimed model was first launched.
AMP 2
In terms of sheer gain, AMP2 takes over from where AMP1 leaves off, with OD2 Mode offering more gain than any other Marshall before. Thanks to the MODE FOUR’s radical design, you retain maximum control even at extreme gain settings and the reconfiguration of its power stage for AMP2 results in an awesome yet tight low-end ‘thump’.
High Headroom 350W Power Amplifier
Innovative, state-of-the-art technology delivers 350W of pure tonal power by exactly recreating the parameters of an all-valve system. Due to this unique design and incredibly high headroom, AMP 2’s impressively wide bottom-end not only has the sound and feel of an all-valve amp, it also doesn’t lose definition at high stage volumes – a problem that many all-valve amps suffer from.
Presence and Resonance Controls
These two Master Section controls affect the high and low frequency damping, exactly as in an all-valve amplifier. These can be used in conjunction with the tone controls to fine-tune your sound.
Tone Matrix Switch
AMP 2’s Tone Matrix control completely reconfigures the tone network for three
different middle frequency positions. Unlike a parametric E.Q. the Treble and Bass controls remain completely interactive with the Middle control.
Scoop
The MODE FOUR has two separate Scoop controls – individually fine-tuned to the voicings of AMP 1 and AMP 2.
Tuner Mute Switch & Tuner Out Jack
This switch mutes the MODE FOUR for ‘silent’ tuning via the Tuner Out jack socket on the rear panel.
Footswitchable Solo Level
The Solo Level control allows you to dial in a global level boost for all Modes over and above the Master Volume setting. This is activated via the included footcontroller and can give a volume boost of up to 6dB.
6 Way LED Footcontroller Included
This facilitates silent footswitching of the four Modes, Solo Boost and Digital Reverb.
Digital Reverb
The footswitchable, built-in Digital Reverb sounds incredibly natural. Each AMPhas its own Reverb Level control.
Series/Parallel Effects Loop
Acompletely transparent effects loop allows the connection of external effects units. Using the independent level controls for each AMPenables you to vary the FX loop from series to parallel.

Two Emulated Line Outs –

Thanks to our critically acclaimed speaker emulation circuitry, these two outputs are perfect for live and studio applications. This line-level signal is pre-Master Volume so ‘silent’recording is possible.
MF280 & MF400 4x12" CABINETS
The MF280 (280W) and MF400 (400W) cabinets are specially engineered to reproduce the balanced mid range and huge bottom-end that are a pre-requisite for extreme hard rock and nu-metal sounds, these cabinets feature:
Sonically optimised Celestion
loudspeaker designs Pro-gauge internal wiring
Increased internal volume
Metal logo and piping
In keeping with all legendary Marshall cabinets the MF 4x12cabinets are not only ready for the sonic demands of a high performance head like the MF350, but also the extreme physical abuse they may receive on the road. We recommend the MF280A (angled) and B (base) for full stack operation and the MF400Aor B for half stack operation.
Full Stack versus Half Stack
The MODE FOUR cabinets can be used either as a full stack (two cabinets) or half stack (one cabinet) configuration. The rig you choose is a matter of personal taste and as always when it comes to sound we recommend you try both to see which suits your style best. Below is a guide to the major attributes of each:
Full Stack:
Enhanced on stage spread. More ‘cut through’ due to accentuated treble and high mids. Iconic stage presence.
Half Stack:
More controllable spread of sound on stage (especially base type). Convenient and portable.
Half Stack Options
Whether you choose an angled or base half stack configuration is a personal choice between the different tonal qualities of each set-up. The MF400A(angled) is, in keeping with other angled 4x12cabinets, tonally more aggressive than the base option. The angled cabinet is the usual choice for those who want a more prominent upper mid and treble response that really cuts through in a live situation. Alternatively, the MF400B (base) delivers a more even mid range with less spread of the aggressive treble response. Marshall 4x12base cabinets are more often used by professionals as they have a more focused bottom-end and a smoother mid range and treble response. They are often easier to deal with in terms of sound reinforcement and monitoring in a live situation.
