DIGITAL IGNITION TESTER
PART NO. 28359
The Mallory 28359 is a very accurate signal
generator that can be used to test the operation
of a vehicle’s ignition system without actually
starting the engine. It can also be used to test
accessories that run from the ignition system,
such as RPM limiters, RPM switches, tachometers
and shift lights. Spring clips and a 2-pin Amp
connector allow easy connection to a variety of
ignition system types.
The display shows RPM, and the value “UP” and
“DOWN” buttons change this value in 10 RPM
intervals. If the “FAST” button is held down, the
RPM will change in 100 RPM intervals. Holding
the value buttons will, after a brief pause, allow
the unit to autostep to quickly reach the desired
RPM. The “MODE” button switches the display
from RPM to cylinder number.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The 28359 has 3 wires with spring clips: a red
wire, which must be connected to a 12v source;
a black wire, which is connected to vehicle
ground, and a green wire, which is the
points/electronic module trigger. There is also a
2-pin plastic AMP connector which plugs into
popular aftermarket magnetic pickup connectors.
To use the 28359, connect the red and black
wires to power and ground, and connect either
the separate green wire to the “points” input of
your ignition, or the 2-pin connector to the
magnetic trigger input of your ignition.
You must disconnect your distributor before
connecting the 28359!
FORM 1664 08/07
When the 28359 is connected to 12 volts and
ground, the display will light up, showing the
last used RPM setting, but the trigger output is
disabled. This prevents the ignition from being
triggered inadvertently when switching the
ignition power on and off for other kinds of
vehicle testing. To turn on the output, press the
“FAST” and “MODE” buttons at the same time,
then release both. Turning the output off is
accomplished the same way.
With power on, press the “MODE” button so that
the cylinder number is displayed (the rightmost
digit will be a “C”). Use the “UP” and “DOWN”
buttons to set the cylinder number if it is not
correct. Once this is set, the 28359 will remember
the value. Press the “MODE” button to return to
the RPM display. If desired, press the “UP” and
“DOWN” buttons until the desired starting RPM
is displayed. Press the “FAST” and “MODE”
buttons at the same time as described above,
and the 28359 will start triggering your ignition.
You can then vary the RPM to test RPM limiters,
RPM switches, tachometers, etc., by using the
“UP” and “DOWN” buttons. If you need to turn
the output off without shutting the power off, just
use the FAST/MODE button method described
above. The 28359 will remember the last used
RPM when the power
is shut off.
