ACCEL DUAL TOWER COILS
140403/140403S/140404/140404S
FORM 3-458-87 10/09
You have purchased the finest aftermarket high output coils
available. Super Coils are ideal for all applications where fast
starting, efficient combustion, long plug life and high energy
output is required.
Step 1
Be sure ignition switch is shut off before beginning installation.
Step 2
As most original equipment coils are mounted beneath the fuel
tank, it must be removed.
Step 3
Remove one original equipment coil at a time, noting the
arrangement, routing and location of the stock ignition lead
wires (from the ignition pickups) and spark plug wires. Be sure
to install the ACCEL 8.8 wires included in the Super Coil kit to
the same spark plugs (cylinders) as the original wires.
Step 4
Use the universal swivel bracket packaged with each coil to
mount the Super Coil itself. Note these universal brackets can
be either bolted or clamped to the frame,
Step 5
After determining the most appropriate location for the Super
Coils and clamp assembly mount it securely and rotate the coil
body itself to a position that will assure that the towers (note
figure A) with the wires installed will not make contact with the
frame, fuel tank or other components. Contact will ultimately
damage the coil and possibly cause spark leakage that could
lead to serious damage or injury.
Step 6
Use Loctite on the coil clamp nuts insuring they do not become
loosened by vibration.
Step 7
ACCEL will not warranty Super Coils that show damage (vibration
or wear marks) indicative of coil contact with other components.
Step 8
With the coil adjusted for proper clearance, the coil clamp
bands may be tightened securing the coil. After the vehicle has
approximately 200 miles of use, we suggest all hardware
involved with the Super Coil installation be rechecked for tightness.
Step 9
Install the 135° end of the terminated spark plug leads enclosed
with the Super Coil kit to the spark plugs that are to be fed by
the coil being installed. Allowing the installation of the 90° coil
end boot and terminal, cut the ACCEL 8.8 suppression core
wire to an appropriate length long enough to permit the cable
to be unstressed while in use.
Step 10
Remove the wire from the spark plug, strip and terminate the
lead using the attached reusable steel crimping anvil. Separate
instructions for this procedure are enclosed in the wire parts kit
package supplied with each Super Coil kit. Great care should
be taken to avoid cutting into the graphite suppression conductor
while preparing the wire for termination.
Step 11
As ACCEL’s motorcycle coils are quite powerful and deliver
a much stronger spark than the original equipment coils,
considerable care should be taken after the installation be sure
the carburetor jets on your model are adequate. A “hotter”
spark normally requires larger jet sizes in order to maximize
power output and prevent a possible lean fuel condition that
could result in an overheated or possibly damaged engine.
Step 12
For optimum performance be sure to open spark plug gap to a
minimum of .035”
For replacement coil wires refer to ACCEL 8.8 Universal Wire
Sets for two and four cylinder engines, available in suppression
core and Stainless Steel/Copper conductor. See an ACCEL
catalog for you specific application.
NOTE: The polarity of the two primary terminals is not important. One
coil tower fires positive and one fires negative. It doesn’t matter which
plug fires positive or negative.
ACCEL cannot be held responsible for consequential engine
damage caused by the installation of these coils if the consumer
does not address the possible resultant lean fuel condition the
installation of these coils may cause.
