Majestic FMFEAU48 Installation Manual

This mantel shelf is intended to be installed on a wall above an existing fireplace. Be sure to check local codes and fireplace manufacturer’s specifications before installing the shelf so as to maintain proper clearances to combustible material.
Tools required: Level Philips screwdriver or electric screw gu n Tape measure Stud finder (optional) Hammer, Drill if pre-drilling nail holes
1. Decide on the height above fireplace of the top of your shelf and make a small mark at that location on the wall, roughly above the center of fireplace. Measure down ¾” from that mark and draw a level line approximately three feet long, generally centered over the fireplace. This line will be the location of the top of the ledger strip that you will install in Step 4.
2. Locate the exact center of the fireplace and, using a level or plumb bob, transfer the center location onto the wall just above the line you drew in the previous step.
3. Locate the studs in the wall using a stud finder, or tapping on the wall (wall will sound solid in vicinity of studs, hollow elsewhere). Studs are usually on 16” or 24” centers. To explore further, you can drive small nails into the wall within the area you know will be covered by the shelf, until you hit the studs. Mark the locations of the studs just above the level line you drew in previous step.
4. Locate the ledger strip supplied with the mantel shelf (give dimensions) and hold it up to the wall, centered on fireplace, with its top edge on the line you made in Step 1. Mark the positions of the studs on it and drill a small hole at each location in the approximate center of the flat side of the ledger. Now screw it to the studs using the drywall screws provided.
5. If you think you need more support for the ledger, put a bead of 300 degree clear silicone behind it before screwing it to the wall. You can also use dry wall anchors of various types.
6. Now slip the mantel shelf over the ledger strip, center it on the fireplace, and attach it to ledger by screwing or nailing down through the top rear edge into the ledger . You may want to pre-drill the top before inserting the fasteners.
7. You may countersink the fasteners slightly (especially if shelf is to be painted) and fill holes with a suitable wood filler before painting.
8. Installation is complete. If you have any questions, please call 410-880-0006, ext.
