GENERAL USE OF THE ARBOR BALANCER
In the event that the arbor does not rotate freely, return the instrument to us for
evaluation.
Under no circumstance should force greater than manual hand push be
applied!
MAGNA-MATIC Arbor Balancers are precision measuring instruments to measure
the balance condition of the Hub Product.
DO NOT DROP OR MISUSE!
USE INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions given with this symbol are for personal safety. Be sure
you and your workers follow them. Before using any equipment read
and understand the instructions.
A careful operator is the best insurance against accidents.
As soon as one side is greater or less, the force of gravity will bring the heavier side
to the 6:00 o’clock position
Let the hub product rotate freely until the heavy end comes to a rest at the 6 o’clock
position. Mark the 6 o’clock location on the ouside of the sheave. This is the heavy side.
Rotate that mark to 3 o’clock and remove your hands. Gravity has its greatest effect
on the heavy side at the 3 o’clock position. The out of balance condition is (Lx)(Wx)
= moment (Moment = length of arm times weight is expressed as inchoz or cmg). To
determine the actual moment, measure the length then place a known weight on the
opposite side, great enough to balance both sides.
KNOWLEDGE AND PROCEDURE FOR MAXIMUM
BALANCE ACCURACY MEASURMENT
The acceleration of rotation of the heavy end from the 3 o’clock position is a indication of
how much the product is out-of-balance.
PRODUCT CORRECTION
Remove a small amount of non-critical material at the 6 o’clock position. Re-check the
mark at 3 o’clock until the product remains stationary -- NO MOTION
A balanced product must be checked to be in balance at least at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock.
A balanced hub product must remain stationary at any position.
There exist two types of dry
(Coulomb) friction
F
MOUNTING THE BALANCER
Mount on a vertical upright stand, with two (2) bolts (5/16” recommended)
Assure that ample hub product rotational clearance exists.
The hub product to be measured must be free to rotate.
Don’t be injured by a falling Hub Product.
MAGNA-MATIC Arbor Balancers hold the hub product by sliding the hub over the
arbor or by pushing (snugging) the hub onto the taper.
HUB PRODUCT MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
With both hands slide the straight hub product hole over the arbor.
With equal force push snug, the taper hub product into the taper arbor.
Remove your hands slowly making sure that the straight or tapered arbor holds
the hub product firmly.
The hub product is held by the arbor balancer to rotate freely.
A - Static Friction no motion
B - Kinetic Friction motion
Static
It takes more force to get impending motion than to keep moving.
For maximum accuracy check the hub product in various positions. Place a mark at 3
o’clock use your hand to lightly tap the table where the balancers’ vertical upright stand
rests. This procedure is not to be performed on taper arbor balances
Vibration can break the taper and let the product fall.
A slight vibration into the bearings will overcome the greater static force to help impending motion, if there’s an out of balance condition.
The accuracy of this balancer is limited to the
A - Concentricity of the arbor
B - The frictional force of the bearing.
Both are in the super precision range and for this application achives greater accuracy
than may be necessary.

For Straight Arbors: Use both hands and, with a firm grip,
slide the hub product off the arbor.
For Taper Arbors: Use one hand to hold the product
and, with another, use a plastic hammer and tap
the outside of the sheave; thereby braking the taper lock
MAINTENANCE
Regularly keep the arbor clean.
For repair return the balancer to MAGNA-MATIC CORP.
The balancer is mounted on precision bearings. It will free spin when applying an
external force. Don’t free spin the balancer by hand or compressed air. It may
injure you with flying disintegrated debris.
CHECK THE BALANCER’S ACCURACY
Select an out-of-balance hub product and mark the heavy end.
Place a mark (felt-tip pen) on the outside of the arbor balancer.
Position the mark on the arbor at 12:00 o’clock and mount the selected product
with the heavy end at 3:00 o’clock. Let it free swing out and record the location
of the heavy end. Repeat the procedure positioning the mark at 3:00, 6:00,
and 9:00 o’clock with the heavy end always starting at 3:00 o’clock and
record each.
Conclusion:
1. The balancer is most accurate when the differential of the recordings are least.
2. When the differential exceeds 4 hours or 120º the balancer may need service.
