Single-Pole Preset Dimmer

Incandescent / Halogen 120V Magnetic Low-Voltage

Important Notes

Please read before installing.

1. CAUTION: Use dimmer model “Q-” only with permanently

installed 120V incandescent or halogen fixtures. To avoid
overheating and possible damage to other equipment, do not use
to control receptacles, fluorescent lighting fixtures, motor-driven
appliances, or transformer-supplied appliances. Use dimmer
model “QLV-” only with core and coil (magnetic) low-voltage
transformers. To control solid state (electronic) low-voltage
transformers, use Lutron electronic low-voltage dimmers.

2. CAUTION: Operating magnetic low-voltage fixtures with all lamps

inoperative or removed may result in current flow in excess of
normal levels. To avoid possible transformer overheating and
premature failure, Lutron strongly recommends the following:

• Replace burned-out lamps immediately.

• Use magnetic low-voltage fixtures with thermal protection or
fused primary windings to prevent transformer failure due to
excess current.

3. When no “ground means” exists within the wallbox, then NEC®

2002 404-9 exception to (b) allows a dimmer without a ground
connection, to be installed as a replacement. A dimmer installed
under this exception (NEC® 2002 404-9 exception to (b)) must be
provided with a plastic, noncombustible, UL listed wallplate.

4. Recommended minimum load is 40 watts.

5. Protect dimmer from dust and dirt when painting or spackling.

6. Dimmer may feel warm to the touch during normal operation.

7. For new installations, install a test switch before installing the

dimmer.

8. Install in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.

Installation

For installations involving more than one control in a wallbox, refer to
Multi-Unit Installations before beginning.

Multi-Unit Installations

When combining controls in a wallbox, remove all inner side sections prior to wiring (see below).
Use pliers to bend side section up and down until it breaks off. Repeat for each side section to be
removed. Reduction of dimmer capacity is also required. Refer to chart below for maximum
dimmer capacity.

same procedure to wire your new dimmer as was used with the
old switch (see Step 3 and below).

1. Precaución: Use atenuador modelo “Q-" solamente con instalaciones de luminarias de halógeno o

incandescente de 120 V. Para evitar un recalientamiento o el posible daño a otros equipos, no instale para
controlar receptáculos, accesorios fluorescentes, equipos motorizados, o equipos subministrados por
transformadores. Use atenuador modelo “QLV-” solamente con transformaderos de bobina y centro
ferromágnetico de bajo voltaje. Para controlar transformadores de estado sólido de bajo voltaje, use

2. Precaución: La operación de un circuito atenuado de bajo voltaje, con todas las lámparas inoperantes o

eliminadas, puede resultar en un flujo excesivo de corriente y daño prematuro al transformador. Lutron

• No opere circuitos de bajo voltaje con lámparas eliminadas.

• Inmediatamente reemplace lámparas fundidas.

• Use transformadores que incorporan protección térmica o transformadores con arrollamientos primarios con
fusibles para prevenir daño al transformador causado por corrientes excesivas.

3. En caso de no existir previsiones para la conexión de tierra en la caja de embutir, la regla “NEC® 2002 404-9

de excepción a (b)” permite la instalación de un atenuador de reemplazo sin conexión a tierra. Todo
atenuador instalado de acuerdo con esta regla de excepción debe quedar cubierto con una placa de pared de
plástico no combustible, aprobada por UL.

4. Carga minima recomendable es 40 W.

5. Durante trabajos de pintura o de reparación de paredes, proteja el atenuador del polvo y la suciedad.

6. Durante la operación normal, los tornillos del atenuador pueden estar tibios al tacto.

7. Para instalaciones nuevas, use un interruptor de ensayo antes de probar el control.

8. Instale de acuerdo a los códigos nacionales y locales gobernando la electricidad.

9. Limpie la unidad con un

Instalaciones de Unidades Multiples

Cuando combine controles en la caja de embutir, elimine todas las secciones laterales internas antes de
conectar los alambres (vea el diagrama siguiente). Use un alicate para doblarlas cuidadosamente hasta que se
despeguen. Los controles requieren reducción en capacidad. Consulte la tabla siguiente para la capacidad
máxima del control.
