Luminox Partners with Scott Cassell
A Warrior and Explorer Working to Protect the World’s Oceans
Scott Cassell is an expert military operative and a consummate adventurer, someone who embraces danger and relies on Luminox timepieces as part of his Essential Gear. He is also a man of high ideals and a true explorer. His exploits are undertaken with an attitude of unwavering commitment to a clearly defined goal—the protection of the world’s oceans and their inhabitants. Never losing sight of this cause, Cassell explores the undersea world, documents his discoveries for science, and hunts down lawbreakers whose activities threaten ocean ecosystems. And Luminox is with him every step of the way, on his wrist and also supporting his work through sales of select watches, including the new 3954 Colormark Special Scott Cassell and 1525 Deep Dive Special Scott Cassell.
Profile of a Warrior
Cassell is a Counterterrorism Combat Dive Instructor to the Special Ops community, an anti piracy consultant and sniper as well as a former Special Ops combat medic and MedEvac Flight Instructor in the Army National Guard. He trains relentlessly and values opportunities to venture outside his comfort zone, opportunities that are served up regularly by the work Cassell does to explore and protect the undersea world.
Cassell founded Sea Wolves Unlimited LLC to counter the rampant poaching of sharks and endangered sea life, a major contributing factor in the decline of the oceans. Combining military precision with environmental motivation, the organization carries out evidence-gathering operations, known as rECOn missions, aimed at bringing poachers and polluters to justice. Armed and employing a tactical approach, the Sea Wolves warriors use Special Ops skills, sniper techniques, camouflage, stealth clothing, body armor, and waterproof thermal cameras as they hunt down poachers and their camps and capture the gruesome discoveries on film. It is hazardous work, but the efforts of Sea Wolves warriors have uncovered the use of illegal nets in protected waters and poaching operations based in a protected natural preserve. Their work has resulted in 11 criminal convictions and numerous investigations and arrests.
A True Explorer
Cassell is also a true explorer. Fascinated by the undersea world since childhood, he has devoted countless hours to inventing equipment and techniques for exploring the mysteries of the ocean. With more than 35 years of diving experience, he holds the world record for a long-distance saturation dive (52 miles) and has spent more than 13,000 hours underwater as a mixed-gas diver. Using a method he invented, Cassell was the first to film a 50-foot Giant Squid in its natural environment.
Realizing that people are motivated to preserve and protect the things they understand and appreciate, Cassell created the non-profit Undersea Voyager Project (UVP) to help marine researchers, educators, students, and “citizen scientists” explore and learn about the under water environment. UVP opens the world’s unexplored oceans to those inspired by deep-sea discovery. Even private citizens can participate in a UVP expedition. UVP’s first oceanic voyage, off the coast of California, will collect samples in the underwater environment at under- explored mid-water zones during a circumnavigation of Catalina Island. Eventually, Cassell plans to circumnavigate the globe in a submersible to further investigate the undersea world.
Research and Education
Cassell has often documented his discoveries on film and freely shared them with the scientific and educational communities. For 15 years, he was a principal investigator in field studies of Humboldt squid. He is the only researcher to have mounted a camera on a Humboldt squid to capture footage of their mating, hunting and cannibalism behaviors and establish shoal densities. His love of sharks has put him in close contact with Tiger sharks in Africa and Great Whites off the coast of Mexico. He has filmed 12 species of sharks in four countries for six major television networks. His filmmaking and production credits include more than 35 television shows and documentaries broadcast on the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, MTV, the BBC, PBS and more. He has also led an expedition for National Geographic. In order to share the latest discoveries with the next generation, Cassell’s Undersea Voyager Project has collaborated with Global SchoolNet to bring live broadcasts to classrooms worldwide via the Internet and to inspire students to choose careers in science and exploration.
The Luminox Partnership
As he carries out his rECOn missions, his exploration, research and filmmaking, Cassell relies on his Luminox watch. Luminox has long been the choice of elite divers around the world, and Cassell easily merits inclusion in this category. Luminox dive watches offer the essential features divers need, such as rotating dive bezels and extreme water resistance. Luminox Light Technology (LLT), which glows continuously for up to 25 years, illuminating the most vital elements of the dial, is fundamental to legibility in the ocean depths, and Luminox watches are built to withstand extreme conditions.
But Luminox also shares Cassell’s concern for the viability of the oceans, so it has chosen to partner with Cassell by helping to fund both Sea Wolves Unlimited and the Undersea Voyager Project. In collaboration with Cassell, Luminox has created the 1525 Deep Dive Special Scott Cassell watch and the 3954 Colormark Special Scott Cassell watch for this purpose. Both watches are Swiss Made. They feature sturdy materials that stand up to extreme environments like those Cassell explores, and, like all Luminox watches, they are equipped with self-powered LLT, so the watch is always visible. A portion of proceeds from sales of the 1525 Deep Dive Special Scott Cassell will support Sea Wolves Unlimited and its missions, while a portion of proceeds from sales of the 3954 Colormark Special Scott Cassell will go to support the work of the Undersea Voyager Project. The funds generated will help Cassell to continue the important work of exploring and protecting the
world’s oceans, their delicate ecosystems and their most vulnerable inhabitants, because when it comes to securing the survival of the planet, there is no time to waste.
