When using your 4U40 cord-free headset equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of electric shock, and injury to persons, including the following:

Read and understand all instructions. Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product. The symbol
identifies and alerts the user to the presence of important operating and service instructions. Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning. Do not locate base unit near water, for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub, in a wet basement or near a swimming pool. Do not place this product on an unstable cart, stand or table. The product may fall, causing serious damage to the product. Slots and openings in the cabinet and the bottom or back are provided for ventilation, to protect it from overheating; these openings must not be blocked or covered. The openings should never be blocked by placing the product in the bed, sofa, rug or other similar surface. This product should never be placed near or over a radiator or heat register. This product should not be placed in a built-in installation unless proper ventilation is provided. This product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power supply to your home, consult your dealer or local power company. Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Do not locate this product where the cord will be abused by persons walking on it. Do not overload outlets and extension cords as this can result in the risk of fire or electric shock. Never push objects of any kind into this product through cabinet slots as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that could result in a risk of fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of any kind on the product. To reduce the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble this product, but take it to qualified servicemen when service or repair work is required. Opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltages or other risks. Incorrect reassembly can cause electric shock when the appliance is subsequently used. Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm. There may be a risk of electric shock from lightning. Do not use the 4U40 cord-free headset to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak. This product requires AC power in order to operate. In order to have phone service during a power outage, have another telephone available that is powered only by the telephone line. Keep all product cords and cables away from operating machinery.

Use only the following type and size battery pack: See page 11 of this manual for a list of battery models. Do not dispose of the battery pack in a fire. The cell may explode. Check with local codes for possible special disposal instructions. See page 11 for information on battery recycling. Do not open or mutilate battery pack. Released electrolyte is corrosive and may cause damage to the eyes or skin. It may be toxic is swallowed. Exercise care in handling batteries in order not to short the battery with conducting materials such as rings, bracelets, and keys. The battery pack or conductor may over­heat and cause burns. To fully access all the features of your 4U40 cord-free headset, please read this User's Guide thoroughly.
The 4U40 cord-free headset combines a unique headset and a pocket-sized remote with all the features of a traditional cordless phone for superior hands-free communication.
The 4U40 cord-free headset may be worn two ways: As a super lightweight Over-the Ear model or as an ultra-stable Over-the-Head model. Both allow for hands-free operation and maximum mobility.
True compander circuitry virtually eliminates background noise; and the forty-channel range of the 4U40 cord-free headset insures the best possible reception in a variety of calling situations.
The automatic digital security code feature of the 4U40 cord­free headset protects your equipment against unauthorized use and against misbilled calls resulting from the activation of your unit by other remote equipment. This feature automatically locks your phone when the electronic remote is in the base unit.

Location
Avoid locating the 4U40 cord-free headset where it will be exposed to excessive heat or humidity (e.g., in a kithcen or bathroom). The Base Unit of the 4U40 may be placed on a desk or tabletop near a standard 120V AC outlet and a telephone line jack, mounted on a standard wall plate or mounted directly on the wall. Keep the Base Unit and Remote away from sources of electrical noise (motors, flourescent lighting, etc.). Always insure that there is sufficient space to safely extend the Base Unit antenna to its full length.
Setting the Dial Mode Switch (rear panel of base unit)
Set the dial mode switch to T for tone dialing, or P for pulse dialing.

Plug the AC adapter into the 9V DC input jack at
the rear panel of the Base Unit.
2.
Plug the AC Adapter into a standard 120V wall outlet. Use only the AC Adapter supplied with the 4U40 cord-free headset.

TEL LINE jack at the back of the Base Unit.

Raise the Base Unit's antenna.
5.
Plug the other end of the 4U40 cord-free headset
line into the telephone wall jack.

Setting the Remote Retainer
1.
Remove the Remote Retainer on the Base
Unit, moving it in an upwards direction.
2.
Flip the Retainer over so that the tab
is facing up.
3.
Slide the Retainer back into the Base Unit.
Mounting on a Standard Wall Plate
The 4U40 cord-free headset is designed for mounting on a standard Lucent wall plate.
1.
Insert the AC Adapter cord into the jack at the back of the Base Unit and plug the AC Adapter into a standard 120V AC wall outlet. Use only the AC Adapter supplied with the 4U40 cord-free headset

Plug the short telephone cord into the phone
and the wall plate jack.

Secure the Base Unit to the wall plate by positioning unit on the wall plate mounting posts. lock into place by sliding downward.

Mounting Directly on a Wall.
If desired, the 4U40 cord-free headset may be installed directly on the wall without a standard wall plate. Before mounting the 4U40 cord-free headset directly to wall, one should:
Select a location away from electrical lines, pipes or other potential hazards contained inside
the wall. Be sure that the wall material is sufficient to
support the Base Unit and Remote. Use #10 screws with an anchoring device suitable
for the wall material.
1. Insert the screws, with their appropriate anchoring devices, at the desired level; one placed approximately 3 5/16 inches above the other. Allow 3/16 of an inch between the wall and screw heads for mounting the unit on the wall plate.
2. Insert AC Adapter into the Base Unit. Plug the AC Adapter into a standard 120V AC wall outlet. Use only the Adapter supplied with the 4U40 cord-free headset.

4. Plug one end of the telephone cord into the TEL LINE jack on the Base Unit.

Place the Base Unit on the screws and push
down until firmly seated.

After the unit is mounted, raise the antenna.

The 4U40 cord-free headset has a built-in Memory Backup feature that allows up to 3 minutes for the the replacement of the unit's battery without losing phone numbers stored in the heasdet's memory. To intall or replace the rechargeable battery in your phone, follow these steps:
1. Remove the Remote's bettery cover.
2.
Plug the battery's cable into the Remote. The plastic connection will mate only one way. If the cable does not fit properly, make sure the bat­tery's connector is properly aligned.
3. Replace the battery cover.
For Optimum battery performance:
Charge the new battery for at least 12-16 hours before using your phone.
Do not allow the battery to completely discharge. Return the Remote to the Base Unit after use.

Charging the Remote
Place the Remote on the Base Unit to charge.
Low Battery Indicator
When the Battery Pack in the Remote is low and needs to be charged, the BATT LOW indicator flash­es. If this occurs while the Remote is in use, the unit emits an alert signal. Complete your call quickly and return the Remote to the Base Unit for charging.
Allow 12-16 hours without interruption for the
Remote to fully recharge.
Replacing the Battery Pack
The battery pack may need to be replaced when it is no longer able to maintain a charge. When replacing the NICAD battery pack, use only the specified packs as follows:

The RBRC™ Seal and Battery Recycling
The RBRC™ Seal on the nickel-cadmium battery pack contained in our product indicates that Lucent is voluntarily participating in an industry program to collect and recycle these battery packs at the end of their useful life, when taken out of service within the United States. The RBRC program provides a conve­nient alternative to placing spent nickel-cadmium battery packs into the trash or municipal waste stream, which is illegal in some areas.
Payments made to the RBRC by Lucent make it easy for you to drop off the spent battery pack at local retailers of replacement nickel-cadmium batteries. You may also contact your local recycling center or call 1-800-8BATTERY for information on where to return the spent battery pack. Lucent involvement in this program is part of its commitment to protecting our environment and conserving natural resources.

Selecting a Different Channel
You may use the channel button on the Remote to switch between forty different channels. If reception is unsatisfactory, switch the channel
by pressing [

] until a clear channel is
found. If there are other cord-free or remote phone devices in the area, they must be set to different channels.
Using the Flash Button
Use [

] to access services such as
call waiting, etc.
Using the Redial Button
Press [

] on the Base Unit to redial the last
number called.
Using the Page Feature
Press the [ page/find
] on the Base Unit for two seconds and the Remote Unit will beep for one minuute. Pressing the [

] for one minute will cause the Remote Unit to beep continuously; at any time the beeping can be stopped by pressing the [

Remote Unit.
Setting the Receiver Volume
The 4U40 cord-free headset has two receiver volume levels. While you are on a call, press [

Adjusting Ringer Tone and Volume
The 4U40 cord-free headset has two ringer tones, each with the two volume levels. Press
[ tone ] until the desired tone and volume
has been selected.

Remove the Remote from the Base Unit and

Enter the number to be stored (up to 16 digits). If you do not enter a number within 20 seconds, an error signal will sound.

Storing Mixed Tone/Pulse Numbers
If your phone line is equipped with pulse dialing, you can store a mixed-mode number (up to 16 digits) and easily access long distance services that require tone dialing.
1.
Remove the Remote from the Base Unit
and press [

Enter the number to be dialed in pulse mode
within twenty seconds.

Dialing a Stored Number
To dial a number stored in memory, press [

Chain Dialing
Tone access codes (for accessing bank accounts or long distance services, for example) can be stored and dialed during a call.

If your 4U40 cord-free headset does not perform properly, first observe the following steps. If the problem still cannot be solved, contact your local vendor. Do not attempt to service this unit yourself. All service should be completed by a qualified technician.
PROBLEM
ITEMS TO CHECK
Base Unit Power Indicator does not light.
Make sure the AC Adapter is plugged into both the Base Unit and a 120V wall outlet.
Charge Indicator does not light when Remote is
placed in Base Unit.
Make sure the AC Adapter is plugged into the Base Unit and wall outlet.
Make sure the Remote is properly seated in the Base Unit. Make sure the Rechargeable Battery Pack is properly
placed in the Remote. Make sure that the charging contacts on the Remote and
the Base Unit are clean.
Conversation is frequently
interrupted.
Make sure that the Base Unit antenna is fully vertical. Move closer to the Base Unit. Change channels. Rechargeable Battery may be weak or not fully charged.
Charge the Battery Pack for 4-5 hours.
Remote doesn't ring.
Make sure the antenna is fully vertical. The Remote may be too far away from the Base Unit. Check the AC power supply.
Callers cannot hear.
Make sure the headset microphone is positioned properly, angled toward the mouth about one half­inch from cheek.

Range
The 4U40 cord-free headset is designed for maximum range and transmits and receives at the highest specifica­tions established by the FCC. Actual range may vary depending on the environment in which the 4U40 cord-free headset is used.
Radio Interference
Radio Interference can occasionally interrupt telephone conversation. This does not signify a defective unit. Moving to a different location and/or changing channels will generally restore clear reception.

LIMITED WARRANTY AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
Limited Warranty
Lucent warrants to you, the customer, that your Lucent telecomunications equipment will be in good working order on the date Lucent or its authorized reseller delivers or installs the equipment, whichever is later (Warranty Date"). If you notify Lucent or its authorized reseller within one year of the Warranty Date that your equipment is not in good working order, Lucent will without charge to you repair or replace, at its option, the equipment that is not in good working order. Repair or replacement parts may be new or refurbished and will be provided on an exhange basis. If Lucent determines that the equipment cannot be repaired or replaced, Lucent will remove the equipment and, at your option, refund the purchase price of the equipment, or apply the purchase price towards the purchase of other comparable Lucent equipment.
If you purchased your equipment directly from Lucent, Lucent will perform warranty repair in accordance with the terms and conditions of the specific Lucent maintenance plan you selected. A written explanation of Lucent's maintenance plans may be obtained from Lucent by calling 1 800 247-7000. If you purchased your equipment from an Lucent authorized reseller, contact your reseller for the details of the maintenance plan applicable to your system.

In the event of equipment malfunction, all repairs should be performed by Lucent or an authorized agent. HEARING AID COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION
This telephone is not compatible with inductively coupled hearing aids. FCC rules prohibit the use of non-hearing aid-compatible telephones in the following locations or applications:

All public or semipublic coin-operated or credit card telephones. Elevators, highways and tunnels (automobile, subway, railroad or pedestrian) where a person with impaired hearing might be isolated in an emergency. Places where telephones are specifically installed to alert emergency authorities such as fire, police or medical assistance personnel. Hospital rooms, residential health care facilities, convalescent homes and prisons. Workstations for hearing impaired personnel. Hotel, motel, apartment lobbies, in stores where telephones are used by patrons to order merchandise, in public trans­portation terminals where telephones are used to call taxis or to reserve lodging or rental automobiles. Hotel and motel rooms (At least ten percent of the rooms must contain hearing aid-compatible telephones, or jack for plug-in hearing aid-compatible telephones which will be provided to hearing-impaired customers upon request.)
