SMG-1 Series
Sound Masking Generators
Quality Features
Lowell's sound masking generators provide a digital
noise signal for sound masking applications.
Choose compact 1RU rackmount chassis style or
space-saving 6" x 5" non-rackmount style to meet
installation requirements.
Versatile outputs include a high impedance line and a
balanced line that may be switched between line level
and mic level.
Description
Models SMG-1R and SMG-1 are sound masking generators
with a 1RU rackmount and space saving 6" x 5" non-rackmount chassis design respectively. These generator-only
models produce a digital noise signal (pink or white) for
masking system applications that utilize a separate amplifier,
or amplifiers, to drive the masking speakers.
The generator produces a digital output signal for sound
masking that is pink noise (equal energy / octave) or white
noise (equal energy / frequency). The selected noise signal
is fed to the masking speakers to produce the characteristic
SMG-1R, SMG-1 Specifications
Generator Output Signals: Pink noise (equal energy/octave) or
White noise (equal energy/frequency)
Generator Output Levels: 500mv (Hi-Z), 5mv (Low-Z mic level)
Generator Connections: RCA phono jack (unbalanced Hi-Z)
Plugable barrier strip (balanced Low-Z)
Generator Controls: Output level (0-500mv max.)
Low pass filter (flat to aprox.
9dB/octave roll-off at 300Hz)
Power Requirements: 117 vac, 60Hz, 18-watts
Size: SMG-1R: 19"W x 1.75"H (1RU)
SMG-1: 6"L x 5"W x 1.5"H

SMG-1R
Rackmount generator (1RU)
"whoosh" sound that "masks" ambient noise in a properly
designed masking system to create conversational privacy.
The generator output levels include an independent Low-Z
(balanced) line that is switchable to mic level and a Hi-Z
(unbalanced) line. Controls include output level and an
adjustable low pass filter that shapes frequencies at 9dB per
octave with roll off at 300Hz.
Versatile generator units are also handy for system equalization and audio equipment testing. Each includes Hi-Z and LowZ output levels for matching input circuits of most commercial
equalizers and amplifiers.
Lowell also offers Model SMGA20 generator with built-in
20W amplifier for a single source approach to small masking
applications, and a wide selection of 8" and 4" masking
speakers for suspended installation above the ceiling or for
mounting on to the T-bar grid.
A & E Specifications
The sound masking generator shall be Lowell SMG Series
Model __________ (SMG-1R, SMG-1). For applications
where a generator device (without amplifier) is required to
produce a digital white or pink noise signal Lowell 1RU rackmount Model SMG-1R or compact 6" x 5" Model SMG-1
shall be specified.
The generator shall have a balanced low-impedance line
output that may be switched between line level (500mv) and
mic level (5mv) and a high-impedance unbalanced line output (500mv). Generator controls shall include output level
and low pass filter. The chassis assembly shall be formed
from heavy gauge steel and finished in black powder epoxy
paint, Chassis shall measure __________ [SMG-1R 19"W x
1.75"H (1RU), SMG-1: 6"L x 5"W x 1.5"H]. An external
power supply shall be included.
