Introduction
The original S40 hatbox spinning wheel was made from 1977 tot 1985.
To celebrate our 40th anniversary we produced a new limited numbered
series of 125 wheels.

Assembly
The flyer assembly with flyer and bobbin is mounted in the box cover. It
can be taken out by lifting the metal pins one by one out of their holes.
Fixing the flyer assembly to the spinning wheel:
Place the rubber band of the flyer assembly behind the screw head (2)
on the spinning wheel. Place the pins of the flyer assembly one by one
in the black holes (6). The flyer is now pressed against the wheel.
Leading the thread:
Put a lead-thread through the metal loop (3) through the hole in the flyer
over the hooks and tie it on the loop on the bobbin.
Changing the bobbin:
Unscrew the black screw (4) and pull the flyer out of the triangular
holder. The bobbin stays behind because of the brake wire and can be
easily changed.

Spinning instructions
Practice treadling, e.g. while reading a book, until your feet work
automatically.
Spinning Plying
Spinning (twisting fibers to make a single yarn):
Start with a piece of yarn of appr. 1 meter (1 yard). Twist with your
fingers a rough yarn out of the wool and knot it to the start-yarn.
Take the wool loose in your left hand. Pull a bit of wool out of your left
hand with the fingers of your right hand in the direction of the orifice, so
far as the fibre volume of the yarn requires. Then while treadling slowly
and still gripping the yarn move your right hand back towards your left
and allow the twist to develop. Then you can let it go through the orifice
and it will be wound up on the bobbin. Always keep thumb and finger
closed when sliding over the fibres.
Fill the bobbin evenly by changing the yarn from one hook to another.

Plying (joining two or more yarns together):
It is easy to ply two threads to one thicker yarn if you place two full
bobbins on the special bobbin holder. Take care that the threads lie
parallel in your hands before plying.
What can go wrong?
The yarn is too hard and overtwisted. Possible causes:
- You are treadling too fast, compared with the speed of your hands.
- The yarn pulls in too slowly. You must brake the bobbin a bit more.
Or maybe the yarn is obstructed by a piece of straw.
- The yarn is caught on one of the yarn guiders.
- The bobbin is full.
The yarn breaks constantly. Possible causes:
- Too little twist, the yarn is not strong enough for winding up.
- The yarn pulls in too hard. The tension is too great. Reduce tension
with the knurled nut.
- Wool of bad quality (too short fibre).
Treadling is very heavy. Possible causes:
- More brake on the bobbin than you need.
- The yarn is obstructed by one of the hooks on the flyer.
- The bobbin is full.
The fibres are difficult to draw out of the wool supply. Possible causes:
- You are holding the wool supply too tightly.
- The twisting got in your wool supply. Take care that the twist does
not come behind your right hand. Keep thumb and finger closed.
- Wool of bad quality (felted, needs combing)

Maintenance
Use a drop of oil to grease the plastic bearings. Lubrication of the ball
bearings is not needed.

Introductie
Het originele S40 spinnewiel is gemaakt van 1977 tot 1985. Ter
gelegenheid van het 40 jarig bestaan van Louët hebben we een
gelimiteerde genummerde uitgave van 125 stuks gemaakt.

Montage
De vluchthouder zit compleet met vlucht en spoel bevestigd in het
kofferdeksel. Deze kan eruit genomen worden door de metalen pennen
van de vluchthouder één voor één uit hun gaten te tillen. Het elastiek
komt dan los vanachter het haakje.
De bevestiging van de vluchthouder aan het spinnewiel
Haak het elastiek (1) van de vluchthouder achter de kop van schroef (2)
aan het spinnewiel. Plaats hierna de pennen van de vluchthouder één
voor één in de zwarte gaten (6). De vlucht zit nu verend tegen het wiel
gedrukt.
Het leiden van de draad:
Leid een begindraad door de metalen lus (3) door het gat in de
vluchtschijf over de haakjes aan het lusje van de spoel.
Het verwisselen van de spoel:
Draai de zwarte kartelschroef (4) op de vluchthouder los en trek de
vlucht uit de driehoekige houder. De spoel blijft achter het afremdraadje
steken en kan nu gemakkelijk gewisseld worden.

Spininstructie
Oefen het trappen, bv. terwijl je een boek leest, zodat je dit kunt zonder
eraan te denken.
Spinnen Twisten
Twisten (het spinnen van een enkele draad)
Maak een begin met een stuk draad van ca. 1 meter. Draai met de
vingers een begin aan een stuk ruwe wol (rechtsom van je af gerekend)
en knoop dat aan de begindraad.
Neem de wolvoorraad losjes in je linkerhand. Met de vingers van de
rechterhand trek je de wol uit de voorraad tot een lont van de gewenste
dikte. Schuif de vingers weer terug en trek opnieuw wol uit de voorraad.
Houd de duim en wijsvinger altijd gesloten.
Spin de spoel regelmatig vol door de draad steeds via een ander haakje
op de spoel te leiden.
De snelheid van trappen moet je aanpassen aan de snelheid waarmee
je met je handen werkt, zodat er goede twist ontstaat.

Te weinig

Te veel twist

Twijnen (het samenvoegen van 2 of meer draden tot een dikkere draad)
Vanaf het twijnrek in de deksel kun je de draden van 2 volgesponnen
spoelen samen twijnen tot 1 draad. Zorg ervoor dat de draden tussen
de handen mooi evenwijdig liggen voordat je ze in elkaar laat draaien.
Wat kan er mis gaan?
De draad breekt herhaaldelijk. Mogelijke oorzaken:
- Te weinig twist waardoor de draad geen sterkte heeft.
- Te veel trek op de draad. De spoel moet minder afgeremd worden.
- Slechte kwaliteit wol (te kort).
De draad is te hard en te kringelig. Mogelijke oorzaken:
- Je trapt te snel in verhouding tot het werk met je handen.
- De draad trekt niet voldoende naar binnen. Je moet de spoel meer
afremmen met de kartelmoer.
- De draad loopt niet goed langs de haakjes.
- De spoel is vol.
Het spinnewiel trapt zwaar. Mogelijke oorzaken:
- Je remt de spoel meer dan nodig is om de draad naar binnen te
trekken.
- De draad loopt niet goed langs de haakjes.
- De spoel is vol.
De lont trekt te moeilijk wol uit de voorraad. Mogelijke oorzaken:
- Je houdt de wolvoorraad te strak vast.
- De twist is tot in de wolvoorraad gekomen. Zorg ervoor dat de twist
niet voorbij de vingers van de rechterhand komt.
- Slecht kwaliteit wol (vervilt).
Onderhoud
Je kunt de kunststof lagers smeren met een druppeltje
(naaimachine)olie. De kogellagers hoeven niet te worden gesmeerd.
