PRODUCT SAFETY SERVICING GUIDELINES FOR AUDIO-VIDEO PRODUCTS
IMPORTANT S AFETY NOTICE
This manual was prepared for use only by properly trained audio-visual service technicians. When servicing this product, under no circumstances should the original design be modified or altered without permission from LG Electronics Corporation. All components should be replaced only with types identical to those in the original circuit and their physical location, wiring and lead dress must conform to original layout upon completion of repairs.
Special components are also used to preven t x-radi ation, sh ock an d fir e hazard . These components are indicated by the letter “x” included in their component designators and are required to maintain safe performance. No deviations are allowed without prior approval by LG Electronics Corporation.
Circuit diagrams may occasionally differ from the actual circuit used. This way, implementation of th e latest safety and perform ance improvem ent changes in to the set is not delayed until th e n ew servi ce liter ature is printed.
Caution: Do not attempt to modify this product in any way. Never perform customized installations without manufacturer’s approval. Unauthorized modifications will n ot only voi d th e warrant y, but may lead to property dam ag e or user injury.
Service work should be performed only after you are thoroughly familiar with these safety checks and servicin g guidelines.
Graphic symbols
The exclamati on point within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert the service personnel to important safety inf ormation in the service literature .
The lightning flash with arrowh ead symbol within an equilateral triangle is intended to alert th e service personnel to th e presen ce of noninsulated “dan g e r ous voltag e” that m ay be o f suffi ci en t magnitude to constitute a risk o f electric shock.
The pictorial repr esen tati on of a fuse and its rating within an equilateral triangle is inten ded to convey to the service personn el the following fuse r eplacemen t caution notice: CAUTION: FOR CONTINUED PROTECTION A G AINST RISK OF FIRE, REPLACE ALL FUSES WITH THE SAME TYPE AND RA TING AS MARKED NEAR EACH FUSE.
SERVICE INFORMATION
While servicing, use an isolation transf orm er f or pr otecti on fr om A C lin e sh ock. After the original service problem has been corrected, make a check of the
following:
FIRE AND SHOCK HAZARD
1. Be sure that all components are positioned to avoid a possibility of adjacent component shorts. This is especially important on items transported to and from the repair shop.
2. Verify that all protective devices such as insulators, barriers, covers, shields, strain reliefs, power supply cords, and other hardware have been reinstalled per the original design. Be sure that the safety purpose of the polarized line plug has not been defeated.
3. Soldering must be inspected to discover possible cold solder joints, solder splashes, or sharp solder points. Be certain to remove all loose foreign particles.
4. Check for physical evidence of damage or deterioration to parts and components, for frayed leads or damaged insulation (including the AC cord), and replace if necessary.
5. No lead or component should touch a receiving tube or a resistor rated at 1 watt or more. Lead tension around protruding metal surfaces must be avoided.
6. After re-assembly of the set, always perform an AC leakage test on all exposed metallic parts of the cabinet (the channel selector knobs, antenna terminals, handle and screws) to be sure that set is safe to operate without danger of electrical shock. DO NOT USE A LINE ISOLATION TRANSFORMER DURING THIS TEST . Use an AC voltm eter having 5000 ohm s per volt or more sensitivity in the following m ann er: Conn ect a 1500 ohm, 10 watt resistor, paralleled by .15 mfd 150V AC type capacitor between a known good earth ground (water pipe, conduit, etc.) and the exposed metallic parts, one at a time. Measure the AC voltage across the combination of 1500 ohm resistor and .15mfd capacitor. Reverse the AC plug by using a nonpolarized adaptor and repeat AC voltage measurements for each exposed metallic part. Voltage measured must not exceed 0.75 volts RMS. This corresponds to 0.5 milliamp AC. Any value exceeding this limit constitutes a potential shock hazard and must be corrected immediately.

Place this probe on each exposed m e ta l pa rt.
X-RADIATION
1. Be sure procedures and instructions to all service personnel cover the subject of x-radiation. The only potential source of x-rays in current TV receivers is the picture tube . H owever, this tube does not emit x-r ays when the HV is at the factory-specified level. The proper value is given in the applicable schematic. Operation at higher voltages may cause a failure of the picture tube or high-voltage supply and, under certain circumstances may produce radiation in excess of desirable levels.
2. Only factory-specified CRT anode connectors must be used.
3. It is essential that the service personnel have available an accurate and reliable high-voltage m eter .
4. When the high-voltage cir cuitry is operating properly, there is n o possibility of an x-radiation problem. Every time a color chassis is serviced, the brightness should be run up and down while monitoring the high voltage with a meter, to be certain that the high voltage does not exceed the specified value and that it is regulating correctly.
5. When troubleshooting and making test measurements in a product with a problem of excessively high voltage, avoid being unnecessarily close to the picture tube and the high voltage power supply. Do not operate the product longer than necessary to locate the cause of excessive voltage.
6. Refer to HV, B+, and shutdown adjustment procedures described in the appropriate schematics and diagrams (where used).
IMPLOSION
1. All direct view picture tubes are equipped with an integral implosion protection system; take care to avoid damage during installation.
2. Use only the recommended factory replacement tubes.
TIPS ON PROPER INSTALLATION
1. Never install any receiver in a closed-in recess, cubbyhole, or closely fitting shelf space over, or close to, a heat duct, or in the path of heated air flow.
2. Avoid conditions of high humidity such as: outdoor patio installations where dew is a factor, near steam radi ators where steam leak age is a factor, etc.
3. Avoid placement where draperies may obstruct venting. The customer should also avoid the use of decorative scarves or other coverings that might obstruct ventilation.
4. Wall- and shelf-mounted installations using a commercial mounting kit must follow the factory-approved mounting instructions. A product mounted to a shelf or platform must retain its original feet (or the equivalent thickness in spacers) to provide adequate air flow across the bottom. Bolts or screws used for fasteners must not touch any parts or wiring. Perform leakage tests on customized installations.
5. Caution customers against mounting a product on a sloping shelf or in a tilted position, unless the receiver is properly secured.
6. A product on a roll-about cart should be stable in its mounting to the cart. Caution the customer on the hazards of trying to roll a cart with small casters across thresholds or deep pile carpets.
7. Caution customers against using a cart or stand that has not been listed by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. for use with its specific model of television receiver or generically approved for use with TVs of the same or larger screen size.
8. Caution customers against using extension cords. Explain that a forest of extensions, sprouting from a single outlet, can lead to disastrous consequences to home and family.

PRODUCT SAFETY SERVICING GUIDELINES FOR AUDIO-VIDEO PRODUCTS
X-RADATION
To prevent possible exposure to x-radiation caused by excessive CRT Anode Voltage, the FA Chassis incorporates a “High Voltage Shutdown” circuit. This cir cuit senses the level of a flyback pulse from the “Flyback Transformer” representative of the actual high voltage on the CRT anod e. Wh en this level exceeds a pr edetermined voltage, the circuit shuts down the horizontal drive, preventing further generation of anode voltage. In this condition, the horizontal drive is ‘‘latched’’ off for about 5 seconds, after which, restart, is attempted.
SHUTDOWN CIRCUIT OPERA TION
The Shutdown pulse voltage from pin 3 of TX3200 (Flyback Transformer) is peak detected (rectified bythe action of diode DX3001 and capacitor CX3001. This form a DC voltage appearing on CX3 representative of the CRT anode voltage (HV) produced by TX3200. This voltage is divided down by precision resistors RX3003 and RX3004. This lower voltage appears on Emitter of QX3001. In the event the CRT anode voltage become excessive, the voltage in Emitter of QX3001 will be higher than voltage in Base of QX3001 (Base voltage is fixed by ZDX3002) and therefore QX3001 enters in conduction mode. Therefore a dc voltage will appear on RX3007 and this voltage will put QX3002 in saturation. A high voltage level (5.66V aprox.) is sent to pin 32 (X-Ray) of video processor IC2200 stopping H oscillation and H output (pin 34) becom es low. If the shutdown condition disappears TV set can be turned-on by using the on/off button.

HV SHUTDOWN MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE
1. Adjust the beam current to OmA in NTSC mode.
2. Apply a variable DC voltage to pin 10 of th e PTD1 connector , from 20 to 0 Vdc, starting at 20 Vdc.
3. Slowly decrease supply towards zero.
4. Remote DC voltage from pin 10 of PTD1.
5. After approximately 5 seconds, verify that the HV must be reestablished (High Voltage Reset).
HIGH VOLT A GE SHUTDOWN TEST
Before to turn the TV on, and after discharging the CRT, connect a high impedance – high voltage meter to the CRT anode. Apply a voltage signal from an external power supply through the shutdown test circuit (see Fig. below). Turn the television ‘on’ and confirm a good signal is being displayed. Reduce Brightness and Contrast settings until the picture is well extinguished. Wait until the Video Menu or display may disappear. Read HV meter, ramping up the external power supply from 0 to 8 volts, the HV increase until the High Voltage shutdown, read the high voltage on the HV meter just before the voltage start dropping.

CRT ANODE HIGH VOL TA GE MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE
Each CRT screen has it’s own safe opreating Anode Voltage and shutdown voltage. Critical Safety components (designated and shutdown voltage. Cristal Safety components (desiganted with a n “X” in the components desigantor) are designed to operate the CRT at a safe operating . Anode voltage and provide proper shutdown thresholds. If replacement of any ofv these components are deemed necessary, it is important to use original type Zenith replacement components. After a replacement is made, confirm proper Anode voltage using the following precedure. Measurement of the CRT Anode voltage must be performed whit not visible raster on the screen and operating at nominal horizontal scanning frecuency 15.734 Khz. After discharging the CRT, connect a high impedance high voltage meter to the CRT anode. Turn the television ‘on’ and confirm a good signal is being displayed. Reduce Brightness and Contrast settings until the picture is well extinguished. Observe the Anode voltage meter reading and compare with the table for the proper CRT screen size. If the voltage reading is higher than the maximum, verify circuit component values and proper operation.

PIN DESCRIPTION
PIN # DESCRIPTION FUNCTION
1 POWER MOSFET DRAIN To drive the chopper xfmr, capable of switching a max of 650V. 2GROUND (HOT) 3DRIVE (+VCC) Positive supply voltage, 32VDC 4 FEEDBACK (Vfb The output voltage error is applied to this pin. 5SYNCHRONY (Vs/s External sync signal & Soft star capacitor.
MOSFET Source connect ion.
At the same time this voltage is also applied to an internal comparator . So th e voltage of this power sour ce must be within a set range, between a 5VDC reference (Vref)
and a 32VDC zener diode (Vz).
This set range is verified through the UVLO (Under Voltage Lock Out) circuit of the Switch Power IC.
START UP
When the VCC reaches a upper threshold voltage (15 VDC) the comparator switches to enable the ICX3612
including all internal bias circuits, control circuits, PWM modulator & Power MOSFET. Due the demand of energy from Cst and Rst the VCC voltage starts to fall. Before to fall too low, a bootstrap winding on the power transformer (pins 13 & 16) reforces adequately the VCC power to keep the full system operation.
VOL TAGE SOURCES
There are Five secondary windings on the TX3600 and each has its own half wave rectifier. Consequently there are Five stand-by DC voltages: B+,
24V AUD, 21VL, 16VSB & 12VUP.
The first is used to source the horizontal sweep circuit, HOT (Horizontal Output Transistor). The second is used for audio. The third is exclusively for the LSP source, which is always on stand-by. The four is used for video low signal processing and The fifth is used for microcontroller.
The main microprocessor IC6000 and the EAROM memory IC6001 are supplied by a five volts stand-by source, +5V SB, which is derived through ICX3820 (0IKE78500P).
The +16 VSB and +12 VUP volts stand-by are protected by fuses FX3613 and FX3614 ( 4A @ 125V) Very Fast Acting, the +21VL and +24 VAUD volts stand-by are protected by fuses FX3611 and FX3612 ( 4A @ 125V) Slow Blow . B+ as m ent ion ed bef ore ar e pr otected by th e OCP circuit. So they do not need fuse.
The FA chassis can be turn it on with the keyboard on the front of the set or with the remote hand control. The microcontroller IC6000 receive a signal and it output a high, about 4.8V, on pin 32 which is called PWRCTL. This pin is connected to RX3832, RX3831 and RX3540; producing the +VAUD, +9VSW, +5VSW.
DEGAUSSING
The FA chassis employs a new method of degaussing, which is performed through software. The IC6000 generate a pulse of about 1 second, time fixed, on pin 43. This pin is set to high, about 4.8 VDC, through R3900,
4.7K 5% ¼watt. And it applies to Q3900, which drives the 12 VCD relay KX3900. So the degaussing is performed when the degauss coil is plugged to CN3T8 connector.
POWER SUPPL Y ALIGNMENT PROCEDURES
ELECTRICAL ADJUSTMENT
The FA chassis SMPS does not need any manual measurement. All the output voltages are regulated through ICX3702 (221-265-03A), error amplifier. The ICX3702 keeps the regulation using a reference voltage, through a voltage divider. The voltage divider is formed by two precision RX3706 and RX3704. The values of these resistors depends of the B+ output voltage.
NOTES:
·When servicing make sure to use a 120 VAC- 60Hz 25 Amp isolated source.
·Use a full white field on the video pattern generator.
