General Appraisal
The Lexmark T430dn provided a solid performance in BLI’s two-month evaluation, completing its
32,500-impression test without experiencing even a single misfeed and requiring no service of any
kind. Along with its flawless reliability performance, another strength of the T430dn demonstrated in
BLI testing was its ability to efficiently process files. It excelled at producing BLI’s job stream, a 19page test suite consisting of five different file formats that simulates the type of traffic a device might
experience in a typical real-world multi-user environment, completing the job stream faster than any
other monochrome printer tested. Based on a 366-MHz processor, the T430dn produced competitive to
faster-than-average first-page times for all five tested file formats. In addition, the T430dn demonstrated
competitive overall simplex efficiency rates from both the PCL and PostScript drivers.
With a maximum true resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi, the T430dn earned BLI’s highest rating for all types
of print jobs. BLI test technicians noted that little, if any, toner spray was evident around characters,
the edges of circles were smooth and displayed no stair-stepping, and grayscale transitions were clearly
visible across a wider range than that produced by most tested 600-dpi print engines. (It should be noted
that when printing at true 1200 x 1200 dpi, the Lexmark T430dn outputs print jobs at about half of its
rated speed.)
While parallel and USB ports are standard and a wide range of network interfaces are available as
options, the Lexmark T430dn was connected to BLI’s test network via its standard 10/100BaseTX
Ethernet interface. Bundled with the unit is Lexmark’s Web-based print management utility, MarkVision
Professional. MarkVision Professional is a very flexible and powerful network management tool.
Capable of identifying all Lexmark and even non-Lexmark printers on a network, the utility makes
setup on the network easy.
MarkVision Professional provides extensive device status and print job status monitoring capabilities,
including real-time feedback when a client module is installed at the workstation or limited real-time
feedback when accessing the utility via a Web browser. In addition, MarkVision Professional 10.2
includes enhanced user authentication and security features to limit unauthorized access, such as
print server password conformance for supported devices, LDAP user authentication utilizing SSL or
Kerberos and Print Permissions Technology that allows the administrator to restrict access to certain
printer functions.
Administrators may limit access to the MarkVision Professional Web server by assigning privileges to
individual users and/or groups. Administrators can use MarkVision Professional to create sub-folders
with filters attached, such as low on toner, so that any device reporting low toner will appear in that
folder. And, with MarkVision Messenger, a component of MarkVision Professional, administrators
can receive e-mail alert messages based on errors or alerts, such as low on toner, as well as take an
inventory of all printers on the network, record all printing data and export that data to a database or
spreadsheet.
The Lexmark T430dn can also be managed via its embedded Web page. By accessing the page via a Web
browser, the user or administrator can view printer status, the amount of consumables (such as toner
and the maintenance kit) remaining, view and modify printer settings, generate usage and configuration
reports and view basic printer information (such as memory and options installed). In addition, users
and administrators can also obtain feedback via a status window that may be accessed from either print
driver. The status window provides real-time pop-up messages regarding status information and may be
configured by the end user to open whenever a print job is sent, only when an error occurs at the device,
only when a warning is sent regarding the device or print job, or to remain minimized on the taskbar
where the icon will flash until the window is opened by the user.
BLI technicians also found the T430dn’s PCL and PostScript print drivers well-laid-out and easy to
use. Lexmark provides PCL 6 and PostScript 3 drivers for Windows 95, 98, NT 40, 2000, Me and
XP, Macintosh, UNIX, Linux and IBM iSeries. Further enhancing ease of use are the unit’s simple
procedures for loading paper, adjusting paper drawers and clearing paper jams. The unit also employs
a user-replaceable all-in-one print cartridge (containing both the toner and the drum), which BLI
technicians found easy to replace, and a fuser kit, which did not require replacement during the test
period.
Other noteworthy features include the T430dn’s standard and maximum memory capacities of 64
MB and 320 MB, respectively, both of which are competitive. Lexmark also offers its optional Optra
Forms software, a printer-based batch document formatting and electronic forms printing solution that
allows forms, fonts, and formatting information to be stored in the printer. Data sent to the printer is
reformatted, positioned on the page, converted to bar codes if required, and merged with the encoded
form or page as it prints. The addition of the optional Optra Forms 16- or 32-MB Flash Card allows
users to store many commonly used documents and forms (designed with Optra Forms software) in
flash memory inside the printer. Another option, Lexmark’s ImageQuick Card, allows users to store
whether printed or electronic (including, but not limited to, copying, faxing, scanning or use on a fax-back system), is illegal and strictly forbidden without written permission from Buyers Laboratory. Violators will be prosecuted
to the fullest extent of the law. To purchase reprints of any BLI reports or articles, contact BLI at (201) 488-0404. Buyers Laboratory Inc., 20 Railroad Avenue, Hackensack, NJ 07601. Contact us at info@buyerslab.com.

forms or documents on a Web site or central server and print the latest version from the printer control
panel. The ImageQuick allows for the direct printing of HTML, JPEG, GIF, PNG, PCX, DCX, Windows
BMP, TIFF, PostScript, PCL and Text files without using an application or a printer driver. A component
of the ImageQuick Card, the Drag’N’Print Utility, allows users to print multiple Web pages, documents
or image files simply by dragging and dropping them on to the printer icon for any printer on a LAN
using TCP/IP.
Pricing Analysis And Summary
The Lexmark T430dn is priced more than $800 less than the average for legal-size monochrome printers
in its speed range with similar standard features, including duplex and network connectivity, though
the unit’s standard paper capacity is less than half that of competitive units. In addition, the T430dn’s
supplies cost per page is competitive with that of other tested monochrome printers in the same speed
range tested by BLI to date.
Summary
Based on its outstanding reliability, excellent ease of use, good print quality, thorough network
management utilities and good economy, BLI recommends the Lexmark T430dn for small to mid-size
workgroups, provided it is configured with additional paper drawers, in need of a monochrome laser
printer with monthly print volumes of up to 18,000 impressions.
Advantages
• With an estimated street price of $849, the T430dn is priced 49% less than the average ($1,673) for competitive
monochrome laser printers. In addition, cost per page is competitive with tested printers in this speed range.
• Text, line art, halftones and solids produced by the T430dn received BLI’s highest image quality rating.
• First-print times for all file types used in testing (Word, PageMaker, TIFF, PDF and JPEG) are competitive to
above average from both print drivers. In fact, when printing from the PCL driver, the T430dn demonstrated first
print times for the TIFF, PDF and JPEG files that are the fastest of competitive laser printers tested to date.
• One of the most thorough and flexible utilities BLI has evaluated to date, MarkVision Professional makes setup
on the network easy, and can identify all Lexmark printers, as well as non-Lexmark printers, on a network.
• MarkVision Professional also provides extensive device status and print job status monitoring capabilities,
including real-time feedback when a client module is installed at the workstation or limited real-time feedback
when accessing the utility via a Web browser.
• The T430dn demonstrated the fastest first page time out of energy save mode, which, at only 10.39 seconds, is
only two seconds more than when the printer is in a ready state.
Shortcomings
• The T430dn demonstrated below average overall duplex efficiency rates from both drivers.
• The standard and maximum paper capacity, at 350 and 1,100 sheets, respectively, are below average.
Reduces power consumption from a maximum of
530 watts to 13 watts after a default 60 minutes
of non-use (user-selectable in one-minute increments from one minute to 240 minutes).

as memory and options installed).
The T430dn ships with PCL 6 and PostScript 3
print drivers, as well as the MarkVision Professional management utility.
Administrative Utilities
MarkVision Professional is a very flexible and
powerful network management tool, which can
identify Lexmark and non-Lexmark printers
on a network; documentation on MarkVision
Professional lists other printers with which the
utility is compatible. Like other Lexmark printers,
the T430dn is designed to be alert-based, allowing
the printer to report errors to the management
utility when they occur so that users do not have to
proactively request status information (this should
help reduce network traffic).
At the workstation, end users may access
MarkVision simply by using their Web browser
or they may install a client module of MarkVision
Professional. Capabilities of the powerful
utility include the ability to limit access to the
MarkVision Professional Web server by assigning
privileges to individual users and/or groups, and
to create sub-folders of the “All Devices” folder
with filters attached (such as low on toner, so
that any device reporting low toner will appear
in that folder). MarkVision Professional 10.2 also
includes enhanced user authentication and security
features to limit unauthorized access, such as
print server password conformance for supported
devices, LDAP user authentication utilizing SSL
or Kerberos and Print Permissions Technology that
allows the administrator to restrict access to certain
printer functions.
