AboutRAID
RAID,anacronymforRedundantArrayofIndependentDisks,isatechnologythatprovidesincreased
storagefunctionsandreliabilitythroughredundancy.Thisisachievedbycombiningmultipleharddiskdrives
intoalogicalunit,wheredataisdistributedacrossthedrivesinoneofseveralwayscalledRAIDlevels.
WhenagroupofindependentphysicalharddiskdrivesaresetuptouseRAIDtechnology,theyareina
RAIDarray.Thisarraydistributesdataacrossmultipleharddiskdrives,butthearrayappearstothehost
serverasonesinglestorageunit.CreatingandusingRAIDarraysprovideshighperformance,suchasthe
expeditedI/Operformance,becauseseveraldrivescanbeaccessedsimultaneously.
RAIDdrivegroupsalsoimprovedatastoragereliabilityandfaulttolerancecomparedtosingle-drivestorage
systems.Datalossresultingfromadrivefailurecanbepreventedbyreconstructingmissingdatafromthe
remainingdrives.
ThefollowinglistdescribessomeofthemostcommonlyusedRAIDlevels:
•RAID0:block-levelstripingwithoutparityormirroring
SimplestripesetsarenormallyreferredtoasRAID0.RAID0usesstripingtoprovidehighdata
throughput,especiallyforlargefilesinanenvironmentthatdoesnotrequirefaulttolerance.RAID0hasno
redundancyanditprovidesimprovedperformanceandadditionalstoragewithoutfaulttolerance.Any

•Iftheserversupportshot-swapredundantpowersupplies,eachofthepowersupplybayhasaredundant
powersupplyinstalled,oronebayhasaredundantpowersupplyinstalledwhiletheotherbayiscovered
byashield.
•Leaveadequatespacearoundtheservertoensurethattheservercoolingsystemworkswell.Leave
approximately50mm(2inches)ofopenspacearoundthefrontandrearoftheserver.Donotplace
objectsinfrontofthefans.Forpropercoolingandairflow,installtheservercoverbeforeyouturnon
theserver.Operatingtheserverforextendedperiodsoftime(morethan30minutes)withtheserver
coverremovedmightdamageservercomponents.
•Properlyroutethecables.Forsomeoptions,suchasPCIExpresscards,followthecablinginstructions
thatcomewiththeoptionsinadditiontotheinstructionsinthismanual.
•Whenreplacingahot-swapdrive,installthenewhot-swapdrivewithintwominutesofremoval.
•Ifyourserverhasairductsorairbaffles,donotremovethemwhiletheserverisrunning.Operatingthe
serverwithouttheairductsorairbafflesmightcausethemicroprocessor(s)tooverheat.

Workinginsidetheserverwiththepoweron

Thissectionprovidesinstructionsonhowtoreplacethesystemboardbattery.
Yourserverhasaspecialtypeofmemorythatmaintainsthedate,time,andconfigurationinformationfor
built-infeatures.Thesystemboardbatterykeepstheinformationactivewhenyouturnofftheserver.The
systemboardbatterynormallyrequiresnochargingormaintenancethroughoutitslife;however,nobattery
lastsforever.Ifthesystemboardbatteryfails,thedate,time,andconfigurationinformation,including
passwords,arelostandanerrormessageisdisplayedwhenyouturnontheserver.
