UsingtheUltraNavpointingdevice

YourcomputercomeswiththeUltraNavpointingdevice.TheUltraNavpointingdeviceconsistsofthe TrackPointpointingdeviceandthetouchpad,eachofwhichisitselfapointingdevicewithbothbasicand extendedfunctions.Y oucancongurebothdevicesbychoosingthesettingsyouprefer.
SetboththeTrackPointpointingdeviceandthetouchpadaspointingdevices. ThissettingenablestheuseofallthebasicandextendedfunctionsoftheTrackPointpointingdevice
andthetouchpad.
SettheTrackPointpointingdeviceasthemainpointingdeviceandthetouchpadforextended

Powermanagement

Whenyouneedtouseyourcomputerawayfromelectricaloutlets,youdependonbatterypowertokeep yourcomputerrunning.Differentcomputercomponentsconsumepoweratdifferentrates.Themoreyou usethepower-intensivecomponents,thefasteryouconsumebatterypower.

Checkingthebatterystatus

ThePowerManagerbatterygaugeinthetasktraydisplaysthepercentageofbatterypowerremaining.
Therateatwhichyouusebatterypowerwilldeterminehowlongyoucanusethebatteryofyourcomputer betweencharges.Becauseeachcomputeruserhasdifferenthabitsandneeds,itisdifculttopredicthow longabatterychargewilllast.Therearetwomainfactors:
•Howmuchenergyisstoredinthebatterywhenyoubegintowork.
•Thewayyouuseyourcomputer:howoftenyouaccesstheharddiskdriveorthesolid-statedrive,how brightyoumakethecomputerdisplay.

Usingtheacpoweradapter

Thepowertorunyourcomputercancomeeitherfromthelithium-ion(Li-ion)batterypack,orfromacpower throughtheacpoweradapter.Whileyouuseacpower,thebatterychargesautomatically.
Theacpoweradapterthatcomeswithyourcomputerhastwobasiccomponents:
•Thetransformerpackthatconvertsacpoweradapterforusewiththecomputer.
•ThepowercordthatplugsintotheACoutletandintothetransformerpack.
Attention:Usinganimproperpowercordcouldcauseseveredamagetoyourcomputer.

Connectingtheacpoweradapter

3.Plugthepowercordintoanelectricaloutlet.
Tipsonusingtheacpoweradapter
•Whentheacpoweradapterisnotinuse,disconnectitfromtheelectricaloutlet.
•Donotbindthepowercordtightlyaroundtheacpowertransformerpackwhenitisconnectedtothe transformer.
•Beforeyouusetheacpoweradaptertochargethebattery,makesurethatitstemperatureisatleast 10°C(50°F).
•Youcanchargethebatterywhentheacpoweradapterisconnectedtothecomputerandthebatteryis installed.Youneedtochargeitinanyofthefollowingconditions:

Chargingthebattery

Whenyoucheckbatterystatusandndthatthepercentageofpowerremainingisloworwhenthepower alarmalertsyouthattheremainingpowerislow,youneedtochargeyourbatteryorreplaceitwitha chargedbattery.
Ifanacoutletisconvenient,plugtheacpoweradapterintoit,andtheninsertthejackintothecomputer. Thebatterywillbefullychargedinabout3to6hours.Thechargingtimeisaffectedbythebatterysize andthephysicalenvironment.Youcancheckthebatterychargingstatusatanytimebylookingatthe batterymetericonattheWindowsnoticationarea.
Note:T oincreasethelifeofthebattery,thecomputerdoesnotstartrechargingthebatteryiftheremaining powerisgreaterthan95%.

Maximizingthebatterylife

Tomaximizethelifeofthebattery,dothefollowing:
•Usethebatteryuntilthechargeiscompletelydepleted;thatis,usethebatteryuntilthebatterystatus indicatorstartsblinkingorange.
•Rechargethebatterycompletelybeforeusingit.Thebatteryisfullychargedifthebatteryindicatorshows greenwhentheacpoweradapterispluggedin.
•Alwaysusepower-savingmodes,screenblank,sleep,andhibernation.

Managingthebatterypower

WiththePowerManagerprogram,youcanadjustyourpowersettingstogiveyouthebestbalancebetween performanceandpowersaving.

Power-savingmodes

Thereareseveralmodesthatyoucanuseatanytimetoconservepower.Thissectionintroduceseach modeandgivestipsontheeffectiveuseofthebatterypower.
Introducingthepower-savingmodes
Screenblank Thecomputerdisplayrequiresconsiderablebatterypower.Toturnoffpowertothedisplay,dothe following:
1.Right-clickthePowerManagerbatterygaugeonthetaskbar.
2.SelectPoweroffdisplay(keepcurrentpowerplan).
Sleep Insleepmode,yourworkissavedtomemory,andthenthesolid-statedriveortheharddiskdriveandthe computerdisplayareturnedoff.Whenyourcomputerwakesup,yourworkisrestoredwithinseconds.
Toputyourcomputerintosleepmode,pressFn+F4.Toreturnfromsleepmode,presstheFnkey. Dependingonthecomputermodel,yourcomputermightsupportthe30DayStandbyfunction.Whenthis
functionisenabled,thecomputerconsumesevenlesspowerinsleepmodeandtakesonlyseconds toresumenormaloperationwhenyoupressthepowerbutton.Formoreinformationaboutthe30Day Standbyfunction,refertothehelpinformationsystemofthePowerManagerprogram.
Youalsocanusethecombinationtoputthecomputerintohibernationmodebychangingthesettingsin thePowerManagerprogram.
Hibernation Byusingthismode,youcanturnoffyourcomputercompletelywithoutsavinglesorexitingfromany applicationsthatarerunning.Whenyouenterhibernation,allopenapplications,folders,andlesare savedtotheharddisk,andthenthecomputerturnsoff.
UsethePowerManagerprogramtocongurehowyouwantthecomputerenterhibernationmode.For moreinformation,refertothehelpinformationsystemofthePowerManagerprogram.
Wirelessoff Whenyouarenotusingthewirelessfeatures,suchasBluetoothorwirelessLAN,turnthemoff.Thiswill helpconservepower.Toturnoffthewirelessfeatures,pressFn+F5orusethewirelessradioswitch.
Enablingthewakeupfunction
Ifyouputyourcomputerintohibernationmode,andthewakeupfunctionisdisabled(thisisthedefault setting),thecomputerdoesnotconsumeanypower.Ifthewakeupfunctionisenabled,itconsumesasmall amountofpower.T oenablethefunction,dothefollowing:
1.ClickStartControlPanelSystemandSecurityAdministrativeT ools.
2.Double-clickT askScheduler.Ifyouarepromptedforanadministratorpasswordorconrmation,type thepasswordorprovideconrmation.

Handlingthebattery

Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,canseriouslydamagecomputercomponentsandoptions. Improperhandlingofstatic-sensitivepartscancausedamagetothepart.Whenyouunpackanoption orCRU,donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthepartuntiltheinstructionsdirectyou toinstallit.
WhenyouhandleoptionsorCRUs,orperformanyworkinsidethecomputer,takethefollowingprecautions toavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Alwayshandlecomponentscarefully.Handleadapters,memorymodules,andothercircuitboardsbythe edges.Nevertouchexposedcircuitry.
•Preventothersfromtouchingcomponents.
•Whenyouinstallastatic-sensitiveoptionorCRU,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthe parttoametalexpansion-slotcoverorotherunpaintedmetalsurfaceonthecomputerforatleasttwo seconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfromthepackageandyourbody.
•Whenpossible,removethestatic-sensitivepartfromthestatic-protectivepackagingandinstallthepart withoutsettingitdown.Whenthisisnotpossible,placethestatic-protectivepackagingonasmooth, levelsurfaceandplacethepartonit.
•Donotplacethepartonthecomputercoverorothermetalsurface.
