Ensurethatyoufollowtheimportanttipsgivenheretogetthemostuseandenjoymentoutofyourcomputer. Failuretodosomightleadtodiscomfortorinjury,orcausethecomputertofail.
Protectyourselffromtheheatthatyourcomputergenerates.
Whenyourcomputeristurnedonorthebatteryischarging,thebase,thepalm rest,andsomeotherpartsmaybecomehot.Thetemperaturetheyreach dependsontheamountofsystemactivityandthelevelofchargeinthebattery.
Extendedcontactwithyourbody,eventhroughclothing,couldcause discomfortorevenaskinburn.
•Avoidkeepingyourhands,yourlap,oranyotherpartofyourbodyin contactwithahotsectionofthecomputerforanyextendedtime.
•Periodicallytakehandsfromusingthekeyboardbyliftingyourhandsfrom thepalmrest.
Protectyourselffromtheheatgeneratedbytheacpoweradapter.
Whentheacpoweradapterisconnectedtoanelectricaloutletandyour computer,itgeneratesheat.

Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotherobject.Doingsocanstressthecordin waysthatcancausethecordtofray,crack,orcrimp.Thiscanpresentasafetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedbyobjects.
Protectpowercordsandpoweradaptersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourpowercord orpoweradapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers. Extensioncordsandrelateddevices

Ensurethatextensioncords,surgeprotectors,uninterruptiblepowersupplies,andpowerstripsthatyouuse areratedtohandletheelectricalrequirementsoftheproduct.Neveroverloadthesedevices.Ifpowerstrips areused,theloadshouldnotexceedthepowerstripinputrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation ifyouhavequestionsaboutpowerloads,powerrequirements,andinputratings.

Plugsandoutlets

Ifareceptacle(poweroutlet)thatyouintendtousewithyourcomputerequipmentappearstobe damagedorcorroded,donotusetheoutletuntilitisreplacedbyaqualifiedelectrician.
Donotbendormodifytheplug.Iftheplugisdamaged,contactthemanufacturertoobtain areplacement.
Donotshareanelectricaloutletwithotherhomeorcommercialappliancesthatdrawlargeamounts ofelectricity;otherwise,unstablevoltagemightdamageyourcomputer,data,orattacheddevices.
Someproductsareequippedwithathree-prongedplug.Thisplugfitsonlyintoagrounded electricaloutlet.Thisisasafetyfeature.Donotdefeatthissafetyfeaturebytryingtoinsertitinto anon-groundedoutlet.Ifyoucannotinserttheplugintotheoutlet,contactanelectricianforan approvedoutletadapterortoreplacetheoutletwithonethatenablesthissafetyfeature.Never overloadanelectricaloutlet.Theoverallsystemloadshouldnotexceed80percentofthebranch circuitrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformationifyouhavequestionsaboutpowerloads andbranchcircuitratings.

Deletingdatafromyourstoragedrive

Someofthedatastoredonthestoragedrivemightbesensitive.Handingyourcomputerovertosomeone elsewithoutdeletingtheinstalledsoftware,suchasoperatingsystemsandprograms,mightevenviolate thelicenseagreements.Besuretodeletedatastoredonthestoragedrivebeforeyoudisposeof,sell, orhandoveryourcomputer.
Youcanusethefollowingmethodstodeletedatafromthestoragedrive:
•MovethedatatotheRecycleBin,andthenemptytheRecycleBin.
•Formatyourstoragedrive,usingthesoftwaretoinitializeit.
•UsetherecoveryprogramprovidedbyLenovotobringthestoragedrivebacktothefactorydefault settings.
Theseoperations,however,onlychangethefilelocationofthedata;theydonotdeletethedataitself.The dataisstillthere,eventhoughitseemstobelost.Thus,itissometimespossibletoreadthedatabyuseof specialsoftwarefordatarecovery.Thereisariskthatpeopleofbadfaithmightreadandmisusethecritical dataonstoragedrivesforunexpectedpurposes.
Topreventleakageofdata,itisimportantthatyoudeleteallthedatafromtheharddiskdrivewhenyou disposeof,sell,orhandoveryourcomputer.Youcandestroythedataphysicallybysmashingtheharddisk drivewithahammer,ormagneticallybymeansofstrongmagneticpower,thusmakingthedataunreadable. Butitisrecommendedthatyouusethesoftware(payware)orservice(payservice)developedforthat purpose.Theprocessmighttakeseveralhours.
Fordisposingofdataonthesolid-statedrive,LenovoprovidestheDriveEraseUtilityforResettingthe CryptographicKeyandErasingtheSolidStateDrivetool.
SomecomputersmightsupportaDiskEncryptionharddiskdriveorEncryptionsolid-statedriveandhave suchadriveinstalled.Youcanlogicallydisposeofallthedataonthedriveinashorttimebyerasingthe cryptographickey.Thedataencryptedwiththeoldkeyisnotphysicallyerasedbutremainsonthedrive; however,itcannotbedecryptedwithouttheoldkey.ThisfeatureisalsoavailablewiththeDriveEraseUtility forResettingtheCryptographicKeyandErasingtheSolidStateDrivetool.
Usingfirewalls
Ifyoursystemispreinstalledwithafirewallprogram,itprotectsagainstcomputerInternetsecuritythreats, unauthorizedaccess,intrusions,andInternetattacks.Italsoprotectsyourprivacy.

Protectingdataagainstviruses

Lenovoprovidesafullversionofantivirussoftwareonyourcomputerwithafree30-daysubscription.After 30days,youmustrenewthelicensetocontinuereceivingtheantivirussoftwareupdates.

Devicedriversareprogramsthatcontaininstructionsfortheoperatingsystemabouthowtooperateor “drive”acertainpieceofhardware.Eachhardwarecomponentonyourcomputerhasitsownspecific driver.Ifyouaddacomponent,theoperatingsystemmustbeinstructedonhowtooperatethatpieceof hardware.Afteryouinstallthedriver,theoperatingsystemcanrecognizethehardwarecomponentand understandhowtouseit.

UpdatingtheUEFIBIOS
