Whenyourcomputeristurnedonorthebatteryischarging,thebase,thepalm rest,andsomeotherpartsmaybecomehot.Thetemperaturetheyreach dependsontheamountofsystemactivityandthelevelofchargeinthebattery.

Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedbyobjects.
Protectpowercordsandpoweradaptersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourpowercord orpoweradapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers. Liquidscancauseashortcircuit,particularlyifthepowercordorpoweradapterhasbeenstressed bymisuse.Liquidsalsocancausegradualcorrosionofpowercordterminalsand/ortheconnector terminalsonapoweradapter,whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.

Extensioncordsandrelateddevices

Ensurethatextensioncords,surgeprotectors,uninterruptiblepowersupplies,andpowerstripsthatyouuse areratedtohandletheelectricalrequirementsoftheproduct.Neveroverloadthesedevices.Ifpowerstrips areused,theloadshouldnotexceedthepowerstripinputrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation ifyouhavequestionsaboutpowerloads,powerrequirements,andinputratings.

Plugsandoutlets

DANGER
Ifareceptacle(poweroutlet)thatyouintendtousewithyourcomputerequipmentappearstobe damagedorcorroded,donotusetheoutletuntilitisreplacedbyaqualifiedelectrician.
Donotbendormodifytheplug.Iftheplugisdamaged,contactthemanufacturertoobtain areplacement.
Donotshareanelectricaloutletwithotherhomeorcommercialappliancesthatdrawlargeamounts ofelectricity;otherwise,unstablevoltagemightdamageyourcomputer,data,orattacheddevices.

Supervisorpassword

ThesupervisorpasswordprotectsthesysteminformationstoredintheThinkPadSetupprogram.Ifyouhave setasupervisorpassword,noonecanchangetheconfigurationofthecomputerwithoutthepassword.It providesthefollowingsecurityfeatures:

isusuallysetandusedbyasystemadministrator.Itenablestheadministratortoaccessanyharddisk driveinasystemlikeamasterkey.Theadministratorsetsthemasterpassword;thenassignsauser passwordforeachcomputerinthenetwork.Theusercanthenchangetheuserpasswordasdesired,but theadministratorstillcangetaccessbyusingthemasterpassword.
Whenamasterharddiskpasswordisset,onlytheadministratorcanremovetheuserharddiskpassword.

Someofthedatastoredontheinternalstoragedrivemightbesensitive.Handingyourcomputeroverto someoneelsewithoutdeletingtheloadedsoftware,suchasoperatingsystemsandapplicationsoftware, mightevenviolatelicenseagreements.Besuretodeletedatastoredonthestoragedrivebeforeyou disposeof,sell,orhandoveryourcomputer.
Youcanusethefollowingmethodstodeletedatafromthestoragedrive:
•MovethedatatotheRecycleBin,andthenemptytheRecycleBin.
•Deletethedata.
•Formatyourstoragedrive,usingthesoftwareforinitializingit.

Theseoperations,however,onlychangethefilelocationofthedata;theydonotdeletethedataitself.In otherwords,thedataretrievalprocessingisdisabledunderanoperatingsystemsuchasWindows.The dataisstillthere,eventhoughitseemstobelost.Thus,itissometimespossibletoreadthedatabyuseof specialsoftwarefordatarecovery.Thereisariskthatpeopleofbadfaithmightreadandmisusethecritical dataonthestoragedriveforunexpectedpurposes.
Topreventleakageofdata,itisimportantthatyoudeleteallthedatafromthestoragedrivewhenyou disposeof,sell,orhandoveryourcomputer.Y oucandestroythedataphysicallybysmashingthestorage drivewithahammer,ormagneticallybymeansofstrongmagneticpower,thusmakingthedataunreadable. Althoughyourcomputerisdesignedtofunctionreliablyinnormalworkenvironments,youneedtouse commonsenseinhandlingit.Byfollowingtheimportanttipsinthistopic,youwillgetthemostuseand enjoymentoutofyourcomputer.
Becarefulaboutwhereandhowyouwork
•Storepackingmaterialssafelyoutofthereachofchildrentopreventtheriskofsuffocationfromplastic bags.
•Keepyourcomputerawayfrommagnets,activatedcellularphones,electricalappliances,orspeakers (morethan13cmor5inches).
•Avoidsubjectingyourcomputertoextremetemperatures(below5°C/41°Forabove35°C/95°F).
•Someappliances,suchascertainportabledesktopfansorairpurifiers,canproducenegativeions.Ifa computerisclosetosuchanappliance,andisexposedforanextendedtimetoaircontainingnegative ions,itmightbecomeelectrostaticallycharged.Suchachargemightbedischargedthroughyourhands whenyoutouchthekeyboardorotherpartsofthecomputer,orthroughconnectorsonI/Odevices connectedtoit.Eventhoughthiskindofelectrostaticdischarge(ESD)istheoppositeofadischargefrom yourbodyorclothingtothecomputer,itposesthesameriskofacomputermalfunction.
Yourcomputerisdesignedandmanufacturedtominimizeanyeffectsofelectrostaticcharge.Anelectrostatic chargeaboveacertainlimit,however,canincreasetheriskofESD.Therefore,whenusingthecomputer closetoanappliancethatcanproducenegativeions,givespecialattentiontothefollowing:
•Avoiddirectlyexposingyourcomputertotheairfromanappliancethatcanproducenegativeions.

Carryyourcomputerproperly
