Inspectingforunsafeconditions

UsethisinformationtohelpyouidentifypotentialunsafeconditionsinanIBMproductthatyouareworking on.
EachIBMproduct,asitwasdesignedandmanufactured,hasrequiredsafetyitemstoprotectusersand servicetechniciansfrominjury.Theinformationinthissectionaddressesonlythoseitems.Usegood judgmenttoidentifypotentialunsafeconditionsthatmightbecausedbynon-IBMalterationsorattachment ofnon-IBMfeaturesoroptionaldevicesthatarenotaddressedinthissection.Ifyouidentifyanunsafe condition,youmustdeterminehowseriousthehazardisandwhetheryoumustcorrecttheproblembefore youworkontheproduct.
Considerthefollowingconditionsandthesafetyhazardsthattheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower.Primaryvoltageontheframecancauseseriousorfatal
electricalshock.
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedCRTfaceorabulgingcapacitor.
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware.
Toinspecttheproductforpotentialunsafeconditions,completethefollowingsteps:
1.Makesurethatthepowerisoffandthepowercordsaredisconnected.
2.Makesurethattheexteriorcoverisnotdamaged,loose,orbroken,andobserveanysharpedges.
3.Checkthepowercords:
•Makesurethatthethird-wiregroundconnectorisingoodcondition.Useametertomeasure third-wiregroundcontinuityfor0.1ohmorlessbetweentheexternalgroundpinandtheframeground.
•Makesurethatthepowercordsarethecorrecttype.
•Makesurethattheinsulationisnotfrayedorworn.

4.Removethecover.
5.Checkforanyobviousnon-IBMalterations.Usegoodjudgmentastothesafetyofanynon-IBM alterations.
6.Checkinsidethesystemforanyobviousunsafeconditions,suchasmetalfilings,contamination,water orotherliquid,orsignsoffireorsmokedamage.
7.Checkforworn,frayed,orpinchedcables.
8.Makesurethatthepower-supplycoverfasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenremovedortampered with.

Guidelinesforservicingelectricalequipment

Observetheseguidelineswhenyouserviceelectricalequipment.
•Checktheareaforelectricalhazardssuchasmoistfloors,nongroundedpowerextensioncords,and missingsafetygrounds.
•Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlesthatarecoveredwithasoft materialthatdoesnotprovideinsulationfromliveelectricalcurrent.
•Regularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsforsafeoperationalcondition.Donotuse wornorbrokentoolsortesters.
•Donottouchthereflectivesurfaceofadentalmirrortoaliveelectricalcircuit.Thesurfaceisconductive andcancausepersonalinjuryorequipmentdamageifittouchesaliveelectricalcircuit.
•Somerubberfloormatscontainsmallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarge.Donotuse thistypeofmattoprotectyourselffromelectricalshock.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Locatetheemergencypower-off(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutletsothatyoucan turnoffthepowerquicklyintheeventofanelectricalaccident.
•Disconnectallpowerbeforeyouperformamechanicalinspection,worknearpowersupplies,orremove orinstallmainunits.
•Beforeyouworkontheequipment,disconnectthepowercord.Ifyoucannotdisconnectthepower cord,havethecustomerpower-offthewallboxthatsuppliespowertotheequipmentandlockthe wallboxintheoffposition.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedfromacircuit.Checkittomakesurethatithasbeen disconnected.
•Ifyouhavetoworkonequipmentthathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observethefollowingprecautions: –Makesurethatanotherpersonwhoisfamiliarwiththepower-offcontrolsisnearyouandisavailableto
turnoffthepowerifnecessary.
–Whenyouworkwithpowered-onelectricalequipment,useonlyonehand.Keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourbacktoavoidcreatingacompletecircuitthatcouldcauseanelectricalshock.
–Whenyouuseatester,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessories
forthattester.
–Standonasuitablerubbermattoinsulateyoufromgroundssuchasmetalfloorstripsandequipment
frames.
•Useextremecarewhenyoumeasurehighvoltages.
•Toensurepropergroundingofcomponentssuchaspowersupplies,pumps,blowers,fans,andmotor generators,donotservicethesecomponentsoutsideoftheirnormaloperatinglocations.
•Ifanelectricalaccidentoccurs,usecaution,turnoffthepower,andsendanotherpersontogetmedical aid.

Powerbutton/LED
WhenthecomputenodeisconnectedtopowerthroughtheIBMNeXtScalen1200Enclosure,pressthis buttontoturnonorturnoffthecomputenode.
ThisbuttonisalsothepowerLED.ThisgreenLEDindicatesthepowerstatusofthecomputenode:
Flashingrapidly:TheLEDflashesrapidlyforthefollowingreasons: –Thecomputenodehasbeeninstalledinachassis.Whenyouinstallthecomputenode,the
LEDflashesrapidlyforupto90secondswhiletheintegratedmanagementmoduleII(IMM2)
inthecomputenodeisinitializing. –TheIBMNeXtScalen1200Enclosuredoesnothaveenoughpowertoturnonthecomputenode. –TheIMM2inthecomputenodeisnotcommunicatingwiththeChassisManagementModule.
Flashingslowly:ThecomputenodeisconnectedtopowerthroughtheIBMNeXtScalen1200 Enclosureandisreadytobeturnedon.
Litcontinuously:ThecomputenodeisconnectedtopowerthroughtheIBMNeXtScalen1200 Enclosureandisturnedon.
Whenthecomputenodeison,pressingthisbuttoncausesanorderlyshutdownofthecomputenode sothatitcanberemovedsafelyfromthechassis.Thisincludesshuttingdowntheoperatingsystem(if possible)andremovingpowerfromthecomputenode.
Ifanoperatingsystemisrunning,youmighthavetopressthebuttonforapproximately4secondsto initiatetheshutdown.
Attention:Pressingthebuttonfor4secondsforcestheoperatingsystemtoshutdownimmediately. Datalossispossible.
LocatorLED
ThesystemadministratorcanremotelylightthisblueLEDtoaidinvisuallylocatingthecomputenode.
ChecklogLED
WhenthisyellowLEDislit,itindicatesthatasystemerrorhasoccurred.Checkthe“Eventlogs” onpage53
foradditionalinformation.
SystemerrorLED
WhenthisyellowLEDislit,itindicatesthatasystemerrorhasoccurred.Asystem-errorLEDisalsoon therearoftheserver.AnLEDonthelightpathdiagnosticspanelontheoperatorinformationpanelor onthesystemboardisalsolittohelpisolatetheerror.ThisLEDiscontrolledbytheIMM.
KVMconnector
Connecttheconsolebreakoutcabletothisconnector(see“Consolebreakoutcable”onpage14 formoreinformation).
Note:Itisbestpracticetoconnecttheconsolebreakoutcabletoonlyonecomputenodeatatimein eachIBMNeXtScalen1200Enclosure.

Useeitheroftheseconnectorstoconnecttheservertoanetwork.Whenyouenableshared EthernetforIMM2intheSetuputility,youcanaccesstheIMM2usingeithertheEthernet1orthe system-managementEthernet(default)connector.SeeUsingtheSetuputilityformoreinformation.

WhenanyoftheseLEDsislit,theyindicatethattheserveristransmittingtoorreceivingsignalsfromthe EthernetLANthatisconnectedtotheEthernetportthatcorrespondstothatLED.

AfteryouconnectthecomputenodetopowerthroughtheIBMNeXtScalen1200Enclosure,thecompute nodecanbestartedinanyofthefollowingways:
•Youcanpressthepowerbuttononthefrontofthecomputenode(see“Computenodecontrols, connectors,andLEDs”onpage12)tostartthecomputenode.Thepowerbuttonworksonlyiflocal powercontrolisenabledforthecomputenode.
Notes:
1.WaituntilthepowerLEDonthecomputenodeflashesslowlybeforeyoupressthepowerbutton. WhiletheIMM2inthecomputenodeisinitializingandsynchronizingwiththeChassisManagement Module,thepowerLEDflashesrapidly,andthepowerbuttononthecomputenodedoesnot
•YoucanturnonthecomputenodethroughtheWakeonLANfeature.Thecomputenodemustbe

Whenyouturnoffthecomputenode,itisstillconnectedtopowerthroughtheIBMNeXtScalen1200 Enclosure.ThecomputenodecanrespondtorequestsfromtheIMM2,suchasaremoterequesttoturn onthecomputenode.Toremoveallpowerfromthecomputenode,youmustremoveitfromtheIBM NeXtScalen1200Enclosure.
Beforeyouturnoffthecomputenode,shutdowntheoperatingsystem.Seetheoperating-system documentationforinformationaboutshuttingdowntheoperatingsystem.
Thecomputenodecanbeturnedoffinanyofthefollowingways:
•Youcanpressthepowerbuttononthecomputenode(see“Computenodecontrols,connectors,and LEDs”onpage12 bytheoperatingsystem.
•Iftheoperatingsystemstopsfunctioning,youcanpressandholdthepowerbuttonformorethan4 secondstoturnoffthecomputenode.
