Usingpasswords

ByusingtheSetupUtilityprogram,youcansetpasswordstopreventunauthorizedaccesstoyourserver anddata.Thefollowingtypesofpasswordsareavailable:
•Power-OnPassword
•AdministratorPassword
•HardDiskPassword
Youdonothavetosetapasswordtouseyourserver.However,usingpasswordsimprovescomputing security.Ifyoudecidetosetapassword,readthefollowingsections.
Passwordconsiderations
Apasswordcanbeanycombinationofupto64alphabeticandnumericcharacters.Forsecurityreasons,it isrecommendedtouseastrongpasswordthatcannotbeeasilycompromised.Tosetastrongpassword, usethefollowingguidelines:
•Haveatleasteightcharactersinlength
•Containatleastonealphabeticcharacterandonenumericcharacter
•SetupUtilityprogramandharddiskdrivepasswordsarenotcasesensitive
•Notbeyournameoryourusername
•Notbeacommonwordoracommonname
•Besignicantlydifferentfromyourpreviouspasswords
Power-OnPassword
WhenaPower-OnPasswordisset,youarepromptedtotypeavalidpasswordeachtimetheserveristurned on.Theservercannotbeuseduntilthevalidpasswordistypedin.
AdministratorPassword
SettinganAdministratorPassworddetersunauthorizedusersfromchangingcongurationsettings.Ifyou areresponsibleformaintainingthecongurationsettingsofseveralservers,youmightwanttosetan AdministratorPassword.
WhenanAdministratorPasswordisset,youarepromptedtotypeavalidpasswordeachtimeyoutryto accesstheSetupUtilityprogram.TheSetupUtilityprogramcannotbeaccesseduntilavalidpassword istypedin.
IfboththePower-OnPasswordandAdministratorPasswordareset,youcantypeeitherpassword.However, youmustuseyourAdministratorPasswordtochangeanycongurationsettings.
HardDiskPassword
SettingaHardDiskPasswordpreventsunauthorizedaccesstothedataontheharddiskdrive.Whena HardDiskPasswordisset,youarepromptedtotypeavalidpasswordeachtimeyoutrytoaccessthe harddiskdrive.

Onsomeservermodels,theAdvancedmenuincludesasettingtoenableordisableHyperThreading.This featureworksonlywithHyperThreading-awareoperatingsystems.ThedefaultsettingforHyperThreading isenabled.However,ifyouarenotusingaHyperThreading-awareoperatingsystemandthesettingfor HyperThreadingisEnabled,yourserverperformancemightbedegraded.Therefore,youshouldalwaysset HyperThreadingtoDisabledunlessyouaresureyouroperatingsystemsupportsHyperThreading.

Usingsystemprograms

Systemprogramsarethebasiclayerofsoftwarebuiltintoyourserver.SystemprogramsincludethePOST, theUEFIcode,andtheSetupUtilityprogram.ThePOSTisasetoftestsandproceduresthatareperformed eachtimeyouturnonyourserver.TheUEFIisalayerofsoftwarethattranslatesinstructionsfromother layersofsoftwareintoelectricalsignalsthattheserverhardwarecanexecute.YoucanusetheSetupUtility programtoviewandchangethecongurationandsetupofyourserver.
