FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS MAY CAUSE
PREMATURE BATTERY FAILURE. THIS TYPE BATTERY FAILURE IS NOT
COVERED BY THE WARRANTY AND WILL NOT OCCUR IF THESE PRECAUTIONS ARE OBSERVED.
The battery pack should be recharged immediately after the lectern is used. The
lectern power should be turned off during this recharging period. Charge the lectern
until the green charging LED goes completely out.
The battery pack in your equipment should be recharged for 16 hours at least once
every six months even though the unit is not used.
In many cases a battery that seems to be dead may be saved by prolonged charging
- up to ten days may be necessary.

Portable Lectern Sound System
GENERAL INFORMATION
The VP85E is designed to provide highly intelligible sound with audiences up to 1500 persons when used with two
ES85 extension speakers. The VP85 may be used as a table-top unit or as a floor unit with the folding S-85 stand.
The stand is available separately as an accessory.
The VP85 may be operated from its built-in battery pack or from
110/120V AC, 50-60Hz, using the charger supplied with the unit. When operated in this manner, the charger simultaneously powers the unit and charges the battery pack. However, the lectern will recharge faster with the lectern
power switch turned off.
In addition to the two shock-mounted main microphone inputs, the VP85 provides an auxiliary microphone input and a
high level input which can be connected to auxiliary audio equipment such as tape decks or other P.A. systems.
The VP85 provides a high level output which can be used with tape recorders and other auxiliary equipment with
inputs labeled “AUX IN” or “HI LEVEL IN”.
The VP85 will power two external speakers with a 2 ohm impedance via two 1/4 inch jacks. Each of these speaker
jacks is driven by a separate 7 watt amplifier which is activated when the speaker is plugged in. LECTROSONICS
model ES85 speakers are specially designed for the VP85 and store inside the lectern for convenient portability. USE
ONLY THE ES85 SPEAKERS IN THESE JACKS.
The VP85 comes complete with an M131S cardioid electret microphone, 16-foot MM-16 microphone cord, GN-17
gooseneck and a CH-40 charger. All accessories are stored in a vinyl pouch inside the lectern. To gain access to the
storage compartment, release the latch located directly above the carrying handle and lift up the hinged lectern
surface.
READING LAMP BULB REPLACEMENT
A spare bulb is located in the accessory pouch packed inside the lectern. It looks like a fuse.
After the burned out bulb has cooled, it may be pried out of its holder with a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool.
Be careful not to damage the lamp holder or the lectern finish. The replacement bulb may be snapped into place with
the thumb and forefinger.
Order a replacement bulb at this time (see accessory table).

BASIC SETUP AND OPERATION
BATTERY OPERATION
The self-contained batteries in the lectern are very reliable and will generally last for several days usage. The unit
should be recharged immediately after each use.
1) Turn volume control completely counter-clockwise
2) Insert gooseneck and/or mic cord plug into lectern
3) Attach microphone to end of gooseneck or cord
4) Push switch on microphone body toward pickup end of microphone
5) Turn BASS & TREBLE controls to center position
6) Turn on the lectern power. Place the slide switch in either the center or right hand position depending upon
whether or not you need the reading lamp. Leave the switch in the center position if you don’t need the reading lamp
to preserve battery power.
7) Adjust the VOLUME control to a setting that provides enough loudness so that the most distant listener can hear.
NOTE: To achieve the maximum loudness from the system, the talker’s mouth needs to be close to the microphone (2
to 6 inches).
AC OPERATION
Simply plug the CH-40 charger into the CH-40 INPUT jack on the control panel and plug the charger into an appropriate AC wall outlet. Check to see that the green lamp next to the charger jack on the control panel lights up. This will
verify that the charger is operating. Follow the same setup and adjustment sequence outlined above.
NOTE
When the battery pack becomes fully charged the green charge indicator lamp will go
out. The state of charge may be checked at any time by connecting up the CH-40
charger. If the battery pack is fully charged, the green lamp will light for a moment
and then go out. During AC operation with a fully charged battery pack, the green
charging lamp may flicker as you speak into the microphone. This is normal.

OTHER OPERATIONS AND CONNECTIONS
GOOSENECKS
Two goosenecks with microphones may be plugged in at once if so desired or a second microphone connected to
the AUX MIC jack by means of the 16-foot cord.
HIGH LEVEL INPUT
The HI LEVEL IN jack is an RCA phono jack which may be used with standard “line” level outputs from tape decks to
amplify the sound for larger audiences. An “earphone” jack on most tape decks will usually work provided you turn
the volume control on the tape deck down fairly low.
HIGH LEVEL OUTPUT
The HI LEVEL OUT is an RCA phono jack which may be used to record the sound directly from the lectern. The
output of this jack is at a “line” level (one volt max.) and should be connected only to “line” or “aux” inputs of tape
decks. If you connect this output to a “mic” input of a tape recorder, the sound will likely be distorted.
EXTENSION SPEAKER OUTPUTS
The VP85 is equipped to drive either one or two 2-ohm extension speakers. The LECTROSONICS ES85 Extension
Speakers were specially designed to operate with VP85 and are sized so that two speakers will conveniently store
inside the lectern.
The external speaker jacks are located on a panel located on the right side of the VP85. Each external speaker jack
is driven by its own 7-watt amplifier. These amplifiers are idle until the speakers are plugged in.
The ES85 speakers are eqipped with a 1/2" diameter socket on the bottom which fits the stud on top of the the SS-5
tripod stand. For maximum coverage the speakers should be elevated slightly above the heads of the audience.

SERVICE AND REPAIR
If your system malfunctions, you should attempt to correct or isolate the trouble before concluding that the equipment
needs repair. Make sure you have followed the setup procedure and operating instructions. Check out the interconnecting cords and then go through the TROUBLE SHOOTING section in the manual
We strongly recommend that you do not try to repair the equipment yourself and do not have the local repair shop
attempt anything other than the simplest repair. If the repair is more complicated than a broken wire or loose connection, send the unit to the factory for repair and service. Don’t attempt to adjust any controls inside the units. Once set
at the factory, the various controls and trimmers do not drift with age or vibration and never require readjustment.
There are no adjustments inside that will make a malfunctioning unit start working.
LECTROSONICS’ service department is equipped and staffed to quickly repair your equipment. In warranty repairs
are made at no charge in accordance with the terms of the warranty. Out of warranty repairs are charged at a modest
flat rate plus parts and shipping. Since it takes almost as much time and effort to determine what is wrong as it does
to make the repair, there is a charge for an exact quotation. We will be happy to quote approximate charges by phone
for out of warranty repairs.
RETURNING UNITS FOR REPAIR
You will save yourself time and trouble if you will follow the steps below:
A. DO NOT return equipment to the factory for repair without first contacting us by letter or by phone. We need to
know the nature of the problem, the model number and the serial number of the equipment. We also need a phone
number where you can be reached 8 am to 4 pm (Mountain Standard Time).
B. After receiving your request, we will issue you a return authorization number (R.A.). This number will help speed
your repair through our receiving and repair departments. The return authorization number must be clearly shown on
the outside of the shipping container.
C. Pack the equipment carefully and ship to us, shipping costs prepaid. If necessary, we can provide you with the
proper packing materials. UPS is usually the best way to ship the units. Heavy units should be “double-boxed” for
safe transport.
D. We also strongly recommend that you insure the equipment, since we cannot be responsible for loss of or damage
to equipment that you ship. Of course, we insure the equipment when we ship it back to you.
