The Teaching Telephone is designed so parents can program in important telephone numbers and record messages for young children. It works like a real telephone! First, take the receiver o the hook before you “make a call.” The receiver must be OFF the hook for the telephone functions to work.
Program and Record Features
Program in a telephone number (up to 11 digits) and then record a message. When the number is dialed correctly, your child will hear your message! You can change the programmed number and record a new message again and again. Note: If you change the programmed telephone number, it will not “clear” the message you recorded. You can either leave the old message, or record a new one.
Programming a Telephone Number
Press On button (light indicates power is on).
Take the receiver o the hook and set it aside (you will hear a dial tone).
Press and HOLD the Program button down (continue holding this button down
until you have programmed in the telephone number).
Punch in telephone number using key pad (while still holding the program button).
Release Program button.
Hang up receiver.
• To check that the correct number is programmed in, lift receiver and press the # key. The programmed number will appear on the display.
• To change the programmed number, repeat the steps above from the beginning.
Recording a Message
Press On button (light indicates power is on).
Take the receiver o the hook (you will hear a dial tone).
Press and HOLD Record button
After you hear the “beep,” start recording your message.
• Second beep tones indicate end of recording time.
Hang up the receiver.
• Check to make sure your message is correct by lifting the receiver and dialing the programmed number. Your message will play if the programmed number is dialed correctly.
• To record a new message, repeat the steps above from the beginning.

Teaching Telephone Activities
Calling Home
It is very important that young children know their home telephone number, including area code. Use the Teaching Telephone to help your child learn how to call home. Program in the 11-digit phone number and then record a message. You may want to write the number on the notepad for visual help as they learn the number.
Emergency Telephone Skills
Children as young as three should learn how to use the telephone to get help in case of an emergency. Discuss situations involving fire and medical emergencies, and teach them how to dial 911. This number is preprogrammed in the Teaching Telephone and will play a pre-recorded message, saying, “911. What is the emergency?” If your town does not use 911, program the phone with the emergency number for your area and record a message.
Explain to your children what will happen when they call 911 and what information they will need to provide: name, telephone number, location, and a description of the emergency. Tell your child to give the operator the requested information, follow the operator’s instructions, and do not hang up.
Discuss situations and reasons for calling 911 with your child.
When to call 911
• You get lost
• Someone gets hurt
• Someone is breaking into a home
• You get a scary telephone call
• Your smoke detector sounds an alarm
• A stranger makes you feel scared
When NOT to call 911
• The bathtub is overflowing
• You miss the school bus
• You get mad at your friend
• A car alarm goes o
• Your pet runs away
• A stranger walks through your neighborhood
Note: Be sure to explain to your child that the Teaching Telephone is used only for play and practice. In a real emergency, he or she must use a real telephone to call for help.
Telephone Manners
Use the Teaching Telephone to teach your child good telephone manners and skills.
Answering the Telephone: Discuss how to answer the telephone: “Hello” or, “May I
ask who is calling, please?” For safety, tell your children not to disclose their names, ages, or grades to strange callers, and be sure they never tell a caller that they are home alone.
Taking a Message: If you would like your children to take telephone messages,
provide them with a clear reminder of the information they need to ask the caller: the caller’s name, telephone number, and the message or request.
