ABC Soup Cans have been designed to teach and reinforce alphabet recognition,
sorting, beginning vocabulary, imaginative play, and much more! Real-life
photographic images assist children in learning beginning vocabulary while they
play with storage-ready soup cans! Each card has a brightly colored object on
the front and its corresponding word printed on the back. Enhance learning
with the following activities using the cards, cans, and the children’s
imaginations.
Suggested Activities
• Have the children line up all the cans in alphabetical order. If this task is too
difficult, reduce the amount of cans by half (13 cans). Then, have the children
recite the alphabet in order, according to the layout of the cans.
• Take the uppercase and the lowercase letter cards out of each can. Mix them
up and then try to match upper and lowercase letters. When a child makes a
match, put those cards back in the correct can.
• Use three or four different cans. Remove all the letter cards from the cans. Mix
up the cards and then try to put the cards back in the correct cans. Repeat this
activity using the photo cards. Mix up the photo cards and put them back in
the correct cans.
• Set up five or six cans. Have children close their eyes and then take one can
away. Ask, “Which can is missing?”
• Choose five different cans for this activity. Take out the five uppercase letter
cards. Take out one photo card from each can. Hide the five letter cards and
the five pictures around the room. Have students go on a picture hunt to find
the pictures and matching letters. When students make a match, have them
put those cards back in the correct cans.
• Play “I’m Thinking of a Letter.” Line up all the cans so the students can see
them. Say to the students, “I’m thinking of a letter that is close to the end of
the alphabet. The letter starts the word Yellow. The letter comes after the
letter X.” Can students name the correct letter? If students can name the letter,
they should empty the photo cards from the appropriate can, and state the
names of all the objects. Repeat this activity, using different clues for different
letters.
• Play “Time to Rhyme.” Use any can for this game. Take out all the photo cards
from the can. Ask students to say the name of the picture on the card. Then,
ask students to say a word that rhymes with that word. The rhyming word can
be a real word or a nonsense word. Discuss whether the word was real or
nonsense. Repeat this activity with all the different photo cards.
• Play “Before and After” with the letter cards or the cans. Take out a can (or
one letter card) and say the letter aloud. Ask students to quickly name the
letter that comes before, the letter that comes after, or both.
