Introduction
How to Start
1. Separate the cards by color and place them face up next to the department that it matches.
2. Each player chooses a game piece and places it on one of the start spaces on the game board.
3. Each player rolls the die. The player with the highest number goes first. Play continues to the right.
Object of the Game: Collect one headline card from
each of the five departments and return to the boss’s office.
A Grammar Game
Alternate Activities
• Play the game again. This time say the letter you think is correct and the grammar rule. Move forward, only if you get both the error and the rule correct.
• After finishing the game, take the five headline cards and write an article for each. Make sure to use the headline in the article.
You just got a fun and exciting job as an editor at your local newspaper! Your duties are to correct the errors found in each department’s headlines. You will be looking for errors in
punctuation, capitalization, grammar, spelling, and verb tense. Impress your boss, by being the first to correctly edit all the errors, make your very own newspaper edition, and Go to Press!
1. Roll the die.
2. From your space, move the
amount of spaces the die shows. You can only move to spaces that are touching each other on at least one side. You can’t move diagonally. You will want to enter each department.
• If you land on a square outside an entrance, you may enter the department on that roll.
• If you roll a higher number than you need to enter the department, you can go in.
Ex: If you roll a 4 and you
only need to move 1 space, you may enter.
• If you land on a space with the name of a department, go to that department immediately. (See rules about the Copy Room.)
• If you land on a space that says, “Boss’s Office,” then go to the center office. You will start from there on your next turn.
• If you do not make it to a department, try again on your next turn. It is now the next player’s turn.
3. Once you are inside a department, choose a headline card from the top of the pile.
4. Read the card to yourself or aloud.
5. Choose the letter that you think is right and say it out loud.
6. Flip the card over and see if you were correct. The errors made on the front side of the card will be corrected and highlighted so corrections can be seen. You are looking at a perfectly edited sentence!
7. If you were right, keep the card and start your newspaper. Your turn is now over. It is now the next player’s turn.
• Some cards might have
two errors. You need to correct all the errors in order to keep the card.
8. If you were wrong, put the card at the end of the pile. Stay in the department until you answer a card correctly on your next turn. Your turn is now over. It is now the next player’s turn.
