ardware Installation Chapter 3
Static Precautions
Static-sensitive electrical discharge can damage electronic components. To prevent
damage to your sys tem boa rd, it is impor tant to handle it ve ry carefully . The follow ing
measures are generally sufficient to protect your equipment from static discharge.
Precautions
Use a grounded wrist strap designed for static discharge.
Touch a grounded metal obje ct bef ore you rem ove the board f rom the anti-s tatic
bag.
Handle the board by its edges only; do not touch its components, peripheral
chips, memory modules, or gold contacts.
When handling chips or modules, avoid touching their pins.
Put the system board and peripher als bac k into their a nti-static ba gs w hen not in
use.
For grounding purposes, be sure your computer system’s chassis provides
excellent conductive contact between its power supply, case, the mounting
fasteners, and the system board.
Unpacking
The system board is shipped in anti-static packaging to avoid static damage.
When unpacking the board, be sure the person handling the board is static-protected.
3-1 CPU installation
Please refer to Chapter 1 “Quick Reference an d Installation”.
NOTE: When handling the processor package, avoid placing direct
pressure on the label area of the fan.
Heat Sink
Follow the instructions that came with your processor o r heat sink to attach a heat
sink to the processor. Make sure that good contact is made between the CPU chip
and the heat sink.
Processor
You are now rea dy to inst all the p roce ss or. Your m othe rboa rd has a 370- pi n, PPG A
type socket, which supports 370-pin (not SEPP type) Celeron processors. Lift the
lever on the PPGA socket and install with the notched corner of the processor
oriented with pin 1. Fully seat the processor into the socket and then close the lever.
See Figure on next page for views of the PPGA 370-pin socket before and after
processor installation.
You should install the processor to the motherboard first, then install the
motherboard in the chassis, then the memory and add-on cards, and finally the
cables and drivers. Foll owing the installation proc edu re s in the order they appear in
this chapter should eliminate the most common problems encountered when
installing a system.

I
ntroduction of BIOS Chapter 4
The Mainboard BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) acts as the bridge between your
Hardware (CPU, Dis k Driv es, Vid eo, etc.) and Opera ting Sys tem Softw are (W indows
95, OS/2 and so on…) The BIOS Setup (also called CMOS Setup) is where many
hardware config uration opti ons ar e set and store d. This config uration i nforma tion will
remain in the BIOS until it is changed, or cleared by removing the battery for a while
then reinstalling it bac k. CM OS (Com plem e ntary Me tal Oxide Sem iconduc tor) ref e rs
to the chip in which the BIOS information is stored.
This mainboard also features a “Flash” BIOS. A Flash BIOS can be upgraded via
software, thereby eliminatin g the need to actually replace the “BIOS Chip” on the
mainboard. The Award BIOS installed in your computer system’s ROM (Read Only
Memory) is a custom version of an industry standard BIOS.
This chapter describes the AwardBIOS Setup program. The Setup program lets you
modify basic system conf iguration settings . The settings are then stored in a dedicate d
battery-backed memory, called CMOS RAM, that retains the information when the
power is turned off.
The rest of this chapter is intended to guide you through the process of configuring
your system using Setup.
The AwardBIOS is immediately acti vated when you first t urn on the comput er. The
BIOS reads system config ura tion information in CMO S R AM and begins the process
of checking out the system and configuring it through the power-on self test (POST).
When threes preliminaries are finished, the BIOS seeks an operating system on one of
the data storage devices (hard drive, floppy disk, etc.). The BIOS launches the
operating system and hands control of system operations to it.
During POST, you can start the Setup program in one of two ways:
1. By pressing Del immediately after switching the system on, or
2. By pressing Del or by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Esc when the dollowing message
appears brieftly at the bottom of the screen during POST:
TO ENTER SETUP BEFORE BOOT PRESS CTRL-ALT-ESC OR DEL KEY
If the message disappe ars be fore you res pond and you still wish to ente r Setup , resta rt
the system to try ag ain by turning it OFF then ON or by pre ssing the RESET butto n on
the system cas e. You m ay al so resta rt by sim ultane ously press ing C trl-A lt-De l. If y ou
do not press the keys at the correct time and the system does not boot, an error
message appears and you are again asked to
PRESS F1 TO CONTINUE, CTRL-ALT-ESC OR D EL TO ENTER S ETUP
If, after making and saving system changes with Setup, you discover that your
computer no longer is able to boot, the AwardBIOS supports an override to CMOS
17
Leadtek Research Inc.
settings that resets your system to its default configuration.
The best advice is to alter only settings that you thoroughly understand. In particular,
do not change settings in the Chipset screen without a good reason. Leadtek has
carefully chosen the Chipset defaults for the best performance and reliability. Even a
seemingly small change to the Chipset setup may cause the system to become
unstable.
4-1 Main Menu
When you enter the AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility, a Main Menu appears on the
screen. The Main Me nu allows y ou to select from several Setup f unctions and tw o exit
choices. Use the arrow keys to select among the i t ems and press Enter to accept and
enter the submenu.

The BIOS supports up to four IDE drives. This section does not show information about other
IDE devices, such as a CD-ROM drive, or about other hard drive types, such as SCSI drives.
NOTE: We recommend that you select type AUTO for all drives.
The BIOS can aut oma ti call y d etec t t he sp ec i fi cat i ons and opti ma l op era tin g m od e of a lmos t a ll
IDE drives. When you select type AUTO for a hard drive, the BIOS detects its specifications
during POS T, every time the system boots.
If you do not want to select drive type AUTO, other methods of selecting the drive type are
available:
1. Match the specifications of your installed IDE hard drive(s) with the programmed
values for types 1 through 45.
2. Select type USER and enter values into each drive parameter field.
3. Use the IDE HDD AUTO DETECTION function in Setup.
Here is a brief explanation of drive specifications:
•Type: The BIOS contains a table of pre-defined drive types. Each defined drive type
20
WinFast® 6000ABX User’s Manua l
r
N
has a specified number of cylinders, number of heads, write precompensation factor,
landing zone, and number of sectors. Drives whose specifications do not
accommodate any pre-defined type are classified as type USER.
•Size: Disk drive capacity (approximate). Note that this size is usually slightly greater
than the size of a formatted disk given by a disk-checking program.
• Cyls: Number of cylinders.
• Head : Number of heads
• Precomp: Write precompensation cylinder
• Landz: Landing zone
• Sector: Number of sectors
• Mode: Auto, Normal, Large, or LBA
oAuto: The BIOS automatically determines the optimal mode.
oNormal: Maximum number of cylinders, heads and sectors supported are
1024, 16 and 63.
oLarge: For drives that do not support LBA and have more than 1024
cylinders.
oLBA (Logical Block Addressing): During drive accesses, the IDE
controller transforms the data address described by sector, head and
cylinder number into a physical block address, significantly improving
data transfer rates. For drives with greater than 1024 cylinders.
Drive A /Drive B
Select the correct specifications for the diskette drive(s) installed in your computer:
The choice: No ne, 36 0K (5.2 5 in) , 1. 2 M (5. 25 i n), 720K ( 3.5 in) , 1.4 4M ( 3.5 in), 2. 88M ( 3. 5 in) .
Video
Select the type of primary video subsystem in your computer. The BIOS usually detects the
correct vide o type automatic ally. The BI O S al s o s uppo r ts a secondary v ideo subsystem , b ut you
can not select it in Setup.
The choice : CGA40, CGA80, MO NO, EGA/VGA.
Halt On
During the power-on self test (POST), the computer stops if the BIOS detects a hardware error.
You can tell the BIOS to ignore certain errors during POST and continue the boot-up process.
The followings are t he selection s:
All, But Keyboard POST does not stop for a keyboard error, but stops for all other errors.
All, But Diskette POST does not stop for diskett e drive errors, but stop for all othe
errors.
All, But Disk/Key POST does not stop for a keyboard or disk error, but stops for all other
errors.
All errors If the BIOS detects any non-fatal error, POST stops and prompts you
to take corrective action.
o errors POST does not stop for any error.
Memory
You can not chan ge any values in the Mem ory fields, they are onl y for your informa tion, The
fields show the total installed random access memory (RAM) and amounts allocated to base
memory, extended memory, and other (high) memory.
21
Leadtek Research Inc.
RAM is the computer’s working memory, where the computer stores programs and data
currently being used, so they are accessible to CPU.
•Base Memory: Typically 640 KB. Also called conventional memory. The DOS
operating system and conventional applications use this area.
• Extended Memory: Above the 1-MB boundary.
• Other Memory: Between 640 KB and 1 MB, often called High memory.

Shadow
Software that resides in a read-only memory (ROM) chip on a device is called “firmware”. The
AwardBIOS permits shadowing of firmware such as the system BIOS, video BIOS and similar
operating instruction s that come with some expansion peripherals, such as, for example, a SCSI
adapter.
Shadowing copies fi rmware from ROM into system RAM, where the CPU can rea d it through
the 16-bit or 32-bi t DRAM bus. Firmware n ot shadowed mu st be read by system through the
8-bit X-bus. Shadowing improves the performance of the system BIOS and similar ROM
firmware for ex pansio n pe ri phe ral s, but it al so re duce s the amou nt o f hig h me mo ry ( 640 K B to 1

the BIOS uses the actual CPU and PCI bus clock values.
SDRAM Loading
There are five choices of Very light, Light, Medium, Heavy and Very heavy for this item.
Because the quality of SDRAM is various on the market, the loading of SDRAM will not be the
same especially when it is running at high frequency such as 100 MHz. These choices will help
your motherboard to use almost all of the SDRAMs.

4-6 PNP/PCI Configuration
The PCI Personal Component Interconnect Bus was developed primarily to address two
important iss ues: a) How to al low pe ripheral dev ices to t ake t he ful les t advan tage o f the po we r of
CPU technology, and b) Provide a simpler installation process for peripheral devices, such as
Network cards, EIDE or SCSI controllers.
PCI accomplis hes the se g oa ls w ith its 32- bit D ata pat h L o cal Bus de sign, an d s uppor t fo r Pl ug &
Play. Unlike older expansion bus architectures, PCI provides peripherals with a direct
connection to the CPU and memory. The PCI bus runs at 33Mhz and has a maximum transfer
capability of 132MBps. With Plug & Play, the system BIOS automatically determines hardware
resources for new peripherals, simplifying installation of multiple interface cards.
This Setup Menu provides configuration options for the PCI Bus and its assigned resources.

4-12 IDE HDD Auto Detection
The "IDE HDD AUTO DETECTION" utility is a very useful tool especially when you do not
know which kind of hard disk type you are using. You can use this utility to detect the correct
disk type installed in the system automatically. But now you can set HARD DISK TYPE to Auto
in the STANDARD CMOS SETUP. You do not need the "IDE HDD AUTO DETECTION"
utility. The BIOS will Auto-detect the hard disk size and model during POST.
NOTE: HDD Modes
The Award BIOS supports 3 HDD mode s : N O R MA L, LBA and LARGE mode. Generic access
