15. Your Dart 16 Capsize Technique
e use of a La serPerforma nce supplied Dart 16 m ast head fl oat is highly adv isable. ( is dev ice will assi st in the
prevent ion of comple te inversio n in the event of ca psize) When s ailing your Dar t 16 in breezy or blus tery conditions,
it is highly prob able that from time to t ime you will caps ize. In the event of a capsi ze we advise you follow t he
procedure documented below:
Righti ng the Boat:
1. Ensure a ll members of the cr ew are accounted for an d safe.
2. If the genn aker is deployed, drop t he sail back in to t he sock.
3. Release t he main/jib sheets f rom respective cle ats and ensure th e sheets are fully e xtended to avoid the boat
saili ng immediately a fter righting.
4. If the boat inver ts, fi rst recover the boat on to it s side.
5. In adverse cond itions and with more t han two crew it is rec ommended that the l argest crew memb er swim
to the bow an d hold the bow during r ighting and unti l all other crew me mbers have re-boar ded after righti ng.
( is ensur es the boat swings i n to the safe head into w ind position upon rig hting)
6. It is recomm ended to use the “scoop” r ecovery system for c rewmembers not involve d in the righting
procedure. W hen the boat is on its side, t he crew members to be s cooped should move to the i nner lower side
of the boat as c lose to the center of the bo at as possible. As the bo at is righted, these c rew members will b e
“scooped” onbo ard the boat ready to help ot her reboard. “Scoopi ng” should only be atte mpted with pract ice
and should on ly be commenced aft er the boat is stabil ized on its side by a cr ewmember who is sec urely located
on the centerb oard and holding t he capsize right ing line under t he gunwale. is is to prevent t he boat from
inverti ng and potential ly trapping the cr ew.
7. To right t he boat, one crewmemb er should stand on th e centerboard movi ng out towards the end of t he
board whi lst leaning out hold ing on to the righti ng line. e boat wil l recover to the upright po sition quickly.
It should nor mally only requi re one average size pe rson to e ect righting on t he centerboard.
8. Immedi ately after right ing, the tiller sho uld be pushed ful ly towards the ma insail to stop th e boat sailing
until a ll crew have reboarde d.
9. Re-boa rding can be und ertaken over the w indward side of the bo at using the right ing line as a step or over
the tra nsom. A grab rail i s positioned on the in ner face of the sub dec k to assist with pu lling yoursel f back in
to the boat.
10. If the perso n in charge of the boat or t he crew are inex perienced in caps izing and right ing procedures, it is
advised t o perform pract ice drills u nder skilled sup ervision befor e sailing the bo at in earnest.
11. All crew members should wear a n approved buoyancy a id at all times whi lst on the water.
Warni ng! Duri ng a capsize, do not hold onto t he tiller exte nsion because it wi ll break.
Warni ng! Be care ful that you do not get a leg t rapped under the to e strap during a caps ize or when
the hull i s heeled.
16. On e Water
• Conform to t he sailing ru les of the road.
• Look out for ch anging weather cond itions.
• Never sail b eyond your ability or t hat of your crew.
• Inform s omeone of where you are going a nd when you’ll be back.
• Be competent i n your sailing sk ills and rig hting techniqu es
17. Safety Afl oat
is ins truction ma nual is not a guide t o sailing your c raft and it should not b e considered suit able for
the task of l earning to sa il a boat. Please read t he manual before r igging and sai ling your Dart 1 6.
Before You Go Saili ng:
1. Check you ar e wearing suita ble clothing and sa fety equipment for th e conditions and ti me of year.
2. Always wear a b uoyancy aid or li fe jacket
3. Make su re a third part y knows where you are sa iling and how ma ny there are of you.
4. Check t he weather forecast
5. Check th e time of high and low t ides if applicable.
6. Seek advice on t he local conditio ns if you are sail ing in a new area.
7. Always check th e condition of your cra ft before settin g o .
8. Check for overhe ad cables when rigging, l aunching and recover ing.
Care, Maintenance and Service of your LaserPerformance
Product
Before rigging your Dart 16, please read and familiarize yourself with this rigging manual. Failure to adhere to
these guidelines could invalidate your warranty.
Maintenance
• Keep the equipment clean by frequently fl ushing with fresh water. In corrosive atmospheres, stainless parts may
show discoloration/brown staining around screw holes and rivets. is is not serious and can be removed with
a fi ne abrasive.
• Excess water should be removed from the hull.
• Ropes, rigging and fi ttings should be checked at regular intervals for wear and tear, including winch gear.
• All moving parts should be lightly lubricated to avoid jamming, i.e., McLube, dry Tefl on or a dry silicone
based spray. Do not use oil.
• Inspect shackles, pins and clevis rings and tape up to stop snagging sails, ropes and clothing and to prevent
them from coming undone.
• When refastening screws do not over tighten as this may strip the thread and do not reuse Nyloc nuts more
than three times.
• Damaged or worn parts should be replaced.
• Sails should be thoroughly washed down with fresh water, dried and stored in a dry place.
Trailers and Trolleys/Dollies
• It is highly recommended that a trolley/dolly is used to launch and recover your boat. Dragging your hull up onto a
beach or slip way will wear away the gel coat or polyethylene and damage the boat. Also, the hull should not be left
on a pebble beach as the hull skin could be dented.
• Trailers should be rinsed with fresh water and checked at regular intervals. It is recommended that trailers be
serviced annually. e trailer and road base should never be immersed in water.
• Trailers and trolleys supplied by LaserPerformance are designed to transport the hull in the best possible manner
to avoid damaging the hull. For instance, LaserPerformance does not recommend support hulls on rollers except
on the keel line and only where there is a reinforced keelson. We also recommend gunwale hung trolleys for our
smaller products. Hulls supported by a trolley bunk or wide strap must have the ability to drain water away from
the hull. Trolley bunks padded with carpet or foam can cause blistering in the gel coat and changes to the hull
color. Please do not transport your LaserPerformance product on a trailer or trolley that has not been specifi cally
designed for the product. Hulls damaged through using an incorrectly designed or wrongly set up trailer or trolley
are not covered under warranty.
• When securing your boat to a trailer for transport be very careful that ratchet straps and ropes are not over
tightened and that there is su cient padding under the strap or rope to prevent the hull/deck from being damaged
through abrasion or pressure.
• Top covers must not be allowed to “fl ap” when driving at speed. is can abrade the surface of the hull and
damage it. It is recommended if you are towing and plan to use your top cover that an under cover is fi tted fi rst
to prevent cover fl ap damage to the top sides of the hull.
• Repairs to the polyethylene or GRP hulls should be undertaken by persons with the relevant equipment and skills.
Contact LaserPerformance for advice.
Storage
• Your boat should always be tied down securely to the ground when not in use.
• UV light will cause fading to some components and fi ttings. A cover is recommended to reduce the UV degradation.
• Do not leave the rig under tension when not sailing or during storage.
• Care must be taken to support the hull adequately if storing on racking or similar. Any sustained point loading
could permanently dent or distort the hull.
• Under covers for LaserPerformance products should be produced from a breathable or semi breathable fabric to
allow moisture to evaporate away from the hull. is is essential to prevent damage to the hull skin. Also, the hull
should never be left in the under cover wet or damp. A combination of moisture and heat over an extended period
can also damage the hull. e under cover is designed to protect the hull when being transported and should be
removed when the hull is being stored. Typical damage includes small bubbles or blisters, excessive print through
of glass reinforcement, foam or wood and color change.
• Rudders and centerboards must never be stored wet in carry/combo bags. is can cause blistering, print through
and warpage.
• All our GRP products are designed to be dry sailed. In other words stored on dry land. If you intend to leave your
boat on a mooring for any length of time it is essential that you apply an osmosis barrier coat. LaserPerformance
can recommend a suitable product.
On Water
• When wear ing a trapez e harness, ta ke particu lar care when cl imbing on to the cent erboard and bac k into the
boat afte r a capsize. e trape ze harness h ook could easily d amage the hul l or deck.
On Water Towing
• Towing your LaserPerformance product at high speed (10 – 20 knots) behind a rib or power boat can seriously
damage the hull. Boats damaged in this manner are not covered by the warranty. LaserPerformance recommends
a maximum towing speed of 6 knots.
