Hard Film Microsphere Wheel Spindle Bearings
GUARANTEED FOR LIFE
One of the major essentials for grinding round
work is a wheel spindle bearing which will op
erate dependably at a constant close clearance.
Landis engineers have developed a new bearing
lubrication technique which has allowed them
With the Hard Film Microsphere bearings you
can grind work to less than 25 millionths round
ness and to finishes less than 2 micro inch. And,
in addition, you can depend on Microsphere
bearings because they are guaranteed for life.
to perfect the Hard Film Microsphere spindle
bearings to run the spindle to the closest clear
ance in the industry—about one half of the
former close clearance Microsphere bearings.
Increased diameter of the
spindle between the bear
ings greatly increases spin
dle rigidity over conven
tional single diameter
spindles.

Extremely close running clearance produces
high oil film pressures which completely sur
round the spindle at the bearings. This creates a
360° oil film preload which keeps the spindle
rotating on its geometric axis regardless of grind
ing load or forces from wheel unbalance.

3 lubrication systems have automatic
shut-off switches for extra safety
Automatic wheel spindle lubrication. Oil is
continuously pumped from a separate reservoir
through a filter and to the Microsphere wheel
spindle bearings. After flowing through the bear
ings, oil is returned to the reservoir. A pressure
switch in the circuit will not allow the wheel
motor to start until pressure is built up in the
system. If pressure should fail, the machine
stops automatically.
Automatic wheelhead ways lubrication is pro
vided for machines equipped with hydraulic in-
feed. In this system, lubricating oil is pumped
from a separate reservoir each time the wheel-
head is cycled. The oil is metered and distributed
to the wheelhead ways by use of an automatic
distribution device. Used oil flows to a container
and is discarded. This makes it possible to have
precise feeds. One filling of the reservoir usually
suffices for several weeks. An automatic float
switch will stop the machine if the oil in the
reservoir is depleted.
All machines have a hand operated pump at the
front which distributes oil to the ways. This
pump is used for lubricating the ways on ma
chines without hydraulic infeed. It also serves
as a primer for the automatic lubrication systems
on machines with hydraulic infeed.
Automatic
carriage way lubrication. Lubri
cating oil is pumped from a separate reservoir,
through a filter and then to the carriage ways.
Oil is distributed throughout the length of the V
and flat ways by the exclusive “

cation system described on page 14. A pressure
switch in the lubrication circuit will automati
cally stop the machine if there should be a fail

this system.

Counterbalanced internal grinding unit has
guarded belt drive for safety

5
This swing type unit is standard equipment on
the type 2R and type 3R universal grinders.
In the raised position the internal fixture and
its 1 lip drive motor are clear of the operating
area of the machine. There are no projections to
interfere with the operator when checking finish
or
size.
'
The flat belt drive is guarded for operator safety
and is in tension at all times. For long lasting
\
accuracy and repeatability of position, this rigid
unit has large wide spaced bearings.
A removable type internal grinding fixture is
standard equipment on the type 3RH universal.
The type 3R wheelhead with a swing type in
ternal fixture and 5 hp wheel drive motor may
be substituted at no extra cost on the type 3RH
machine. When this substitution is made, the
maximum width grinding wheel will be 3" in
stead of 4" maximum with the type 3RH wheel-
head.
The removable type internal grinding fixture is
driven directly from the wheel drive motor. Re
movable types are also available on the type 2R
and type 3R machines as a substitution for the
swing type at no change in the price of the
machine.
When
18" diameter grinding wheels are speci
fied for these machines, the swing type internal
grinding fixture cannot be furnished.
The internal grinding unit can be moved by re
leasing one clamping collar, lowering the single
unit by hand and reclamping it with the same
collar. It’s counterbalanced for easy handling.
You can do external and internal grinding on a
workpiece without removing it from the chuck.
This
assures concentricity between the O.D.
and I.D.
Internal tapers as well as straight holes can be
ground. A wide selection of quills and wheels
extends the range of hole sizes and depths. See
page 24.

Landis eye level wheelfeed for faster setup
and precise repeatability
The Landis eye level wheelfeed has been
an operator favorite for years. It’s an ex
clusive feature that eliminates the need
for
the operator to bend over to read
graduations on bed mounted wheelfeed
handwheels. Eye level wheelfeed saves
time and reduces errors because the dis
tance between the workpiece and the
wheelfeed
graduations is only a glance
away.
An adjustable stop permits repeating
forward positioning of the wheelhead
when grinding pieces of the same size.
The entire feed mechanism is equipped
with
heavy duty parts and anti-friction
bearings for easy operation, extreme ac
curacy and instant response to wheel-
feed movements, either by hand or by
power.
