LANDIS Chaser Grinders
for grinding
LANDIS Chaser Grinders are designed to grind
LANDIS Tangential Chasers to the correct lead and
rake angles with a minimum waste of chaser life and
to do so with little loss of time. Although a LANDIS
Chaser Grinder is not absolutel}' essential to the proper
operation of a LANDIS Die Head, the accuracy with
which the chasers are ground will be reflected both in
the quality of the thread produced with the die head
and in chaser life.
LANDIS Chaser Grinders are built in three sizes:
The Model 0, No. 1, and No. V/o. The sizes and
price
ranges of the various machines are such as to
make available, to all users of LANDIS Threading
Equipment, a machine suitable for their individual re
quirements.

The new LANDIS GRINDERS all have built-in
motors, the grinding wheels being mounted directly on
the armature shaft, thus eliminating gears or other
mechanical drives.
The motors which are used in these grinders are
of the ball-bearing, continuous duty type. A ball
bearing on the armature shaft assumes the thrust load
when chasers are ground on the cup wheel.
The speeds at which LANDIS Chaser Grinders
operate were selected with the view of obtaining
maximum efficiency and rapidity in the grinding
operation.

LANDIS Chaser Grinders are equipped with two

The chaser clamping screw contacts the chaser on
the dovetail surfaces in the same manner as the chaser

The Model 0 Grinder is a small machine em
ploying a j/2 horse power motor. This machine is
designed primarily for grinding LANDIS Chasers for
the smaller sizes of LANDIS Heads which use chasers
z
\&\ to %" wide. It will efficiently grind chasers for
heads of all sizes up to z
MATIC and 1J4" LANDEX; and, if necessary, it may
be used for chasers \y wide. The motor is of the
ball-bearing, continuous duty type . Since the grinder
is small, it is an ideal machine for use in departments
where a number of LANDIS Heads are employed.
The use of the Model 0 Grinder, in a department,
eliminates the necessity of carrying the chasers to
the tool room for regrinding

equipment for the Model 0 Grinder are listed under

filling the bushing with heavy grease when the swivel
head is withdrawn to the position where it would operate
with a
new grinding wheel on the machine. As the wheel
wears and the swivel head is advanced, the heavy
grease will gradually be forced out through all joints.
The action of the grease, coming out under pressure,
eliminates the possibility of having grit or dirt working
into the machine.
An additional feature of this fixture is an adjust
able stop for limiting the length of travel of the swivel
head, parallel to the wheel. Although the usual prac
tice is to grind the lip rake angle, of LANDIS Chasers by
hand on the straight wheel, it is now possible to grind
this angle on the cup wheel. By limiting the travel of
the fixture in which the chaser is gripped, with an ad
justable stop, it is a simple matter to control the grind
ing
of
the lip rake angle.

The No. 1 Grinder is a heavy duty machine em

designed for the grinding of LANDIS Chasers from

machine for use in tool rooms for the production grind
ing of LANDIS Chasers. The specifications for the
complete range of chaser widths arc shown on page 4.
The various motors which are supplied as stand

specifications of the machine on page 4.
Both the Model 0 and the No. 1 Grinders em
ploy a new method for infeeding the chaser and passing
it back and forth across the cup wheel. The swivel

head, in which the chaser is gripped for grinding, is
mounted on a cylindrical base. The cylindrical base
operates on a spindle and is fitted with a long handle
which is used to swing it in an
A feed screw, passing through the spindle, is provided
to infeed or withdraw the swivel head.
The infeed screw and the bearings, on which the
swivel head base operates, are fully protected from the
possibility of grit entering the sliding surfaces. A
bushing, which is fitted into the cylindrical base and
which extends into the bed of the machine, completely

The No. I]/? Grinder is an extra heavy duty ma
chine designed for the grinding of the LANDIS Chasers
under the most severe production conditions. This
grinder is equipped with a traversing table, at the
cup wheel end. Means are also provided, at the cup
wheel end, for the use of a coolant to reduce heat gen
eration and, consequently, to eliminate the burning of
the chaser.
Every precaution has been taken to prevent the
entry of grit or dirt to the sliding surfaces of the tra
versing table, etc. A guard, which
the table and which is cast integral with the travers
ing table, prevents the overflow of the grinding coolant.
The entire unit, consisting of the swivel head, travers
ing table, and table base, is mounted on guides with
a feed screw for infeeding or withdrawing the chaser.
The guides are protected by telescoping guards.
The table has gibs that are adjustable to compen
sate for wear.
A centrifugal pump, gear driven directly from the
armature shaft and located inside the bed of the ma
chine, provides a steady flow of coolant from a large
reservoir to the grinding wheel.

The Roller Cutter Disc Grinding Attachment may
be applied to the Xo. 1 and Xo. 1/2 LAXDIS Chaser
Grinders. The attachment is used in connection with
the straight wheel after the steady rest has been re
moved.
The cutter disc grinding attachment efficiently
handles discs of all diameters. The cutter disc is mount
ed on the end of a shaft which is adjustable, in a hori
zontal plane, for obtaining any desired bevel on the cut
ting edge. A hand wheel, with a polished heavy rim,
is mounted on the opposite end of the cutter shaft and
permits revolving the disc or retarding it if the peripheral
speed becomes too great.
Infeed is provided by means of a hand wheel at the

by a hand wheel at the left hand side. The cross tra
verse permits withdrawal of the slide for mounting or
removal of the cutter disc and aids in preserving an even

These Fixtures provide an extremely inexpensive
and satisfactory method of grinding Landis Chasers.
The Fixtures have a universal adjustment which per
mits accurate grinding of the rake and lead angles on
the cutting edge of the Chaser. These angles are very
important in the production of accurate, well-formed
threads. The Fixtures also provide a means of regrind
ing the throat angle of the chasers, if absolutely neces
sary.
Supported by the base casting is a cross arm, which
is arranged so that the chaser platen can be adjusted
vertically. This feature makes possible the grinding of
any desired rake angle. The platen can be rotated
throughout a 360 degree circle horizontally, thus pro
viding an accurate means of producing the desired lead
angle. Knurled knobs, which have pin holes for added
leverage, securely hold the Fixture in position in which
it is set.
